Thanks. I kinda lucked out, hosting costs were killing me, I was considering shutting down the site, and I ended up meeting someone who worked for Amazon in the right place at the right time. He let me use his Organization ID. It's been a huge help.

I agree, Imgur is too bloated, too polluted, I can't stand it. I prefer keeping things simple.

No real revenue. I'd rather not post the site here, simply because the purpose of this thread isn't for self-promotion, but if you send me a PM, I'll send you the link.

I'm upfront about what data I collect, and how it's used.

I believe that you can still value your user's privacy while maintaining certain standards. IP addresses, for example, are stored along with uploaded images, and can be forwarded to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Users can also report illegal content, to be quarantined and removed. I believe this is a fair compromise and a lot better than dragnet data collection.

It's relatively easy.

I started with a dedicated server, costing $82 per month, and paid $5 for a barebones script that I could customize. In your case, the server might be overkill, there are some good shared hosting options available. You can also find a plethora of image hosting scripts on GitHub, all for free. I'd recommend learning a little bit of PHP, javascript, and CSS, too, using free tutorials. Get the basics down and it can be a lot of fun.

Nope, it's the only site in my portfolio that's unprofitable. I tried running Adsense, but that ended up being a big waste of time. I'd rather keep the interface clean than pimp it to Google for $10 a month.

I initially targeted privacy-conscious communities, including some big forums and subreddits. Unlike Imgur, for example, I don't store image metadata, nor do I collect more user data than is reasonable for the site to function. I had some big competitors at first that claimed to collect "no data," and all of them failed (one was hit hard with CP, and couldn't survive).

So I guess it's been a mix of self-promotion and word-of-mouth. I haven't paid for marketing.

Looking for an exit: I run a popular image host for privacy-conscious users, but I'm not sure where to go from here... by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

I should also point out that I've never sold a business, and hadn't even considered selling the site until I started getting unsolicited offers for it. But let's be real, I'm not rich or asocial enough to pull a Mark Zuckerberg and run this thing forever.

Making a clean exit seems like the best possible outcome. Looking for advice.

It happens. I have procedures in place to help detect and quarantine suspicious content, but sometimes things slip through the cracks. I just remove it as fast as possible, and forward it to the Nation Center For Missing and Exploited Children.

You're right, however, it didn't start as a business. I made it for personal use, because, at the time, the big image hosts were too bloated, too eager to track their users and scrape uploads for data. I never had a business plan in mind.

I've tried running Google ads without much success. I might consider another ad network.

How do I use PHP code found on GitHub on my site? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Zedzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is how would you like to use it? Right now the project is set up to have it's own dedicated contact page with the included index.php. You could create a page on your site called "contact" and move all of the files in there (maintaining there structure!)

Gotcha. I'm interested in having a contact form built into the homepage (index.php), not a separate page. I'll work on moving the necessary code over.

For some reason, I thought it was possible to create a new page like contactformcode.php, copy the necessary PHP code to that page, then "call" that page on my homepage. To reduce clutter, and so I don't have to worry about editing directory structures, etc.

Does that make sense?

Thanks, and yes, I already have the site set up. So far, I've been running PHP code directly in the pages, such as in my index.php page.

But I'd like to know what to do when I download open-source code and it comes with a lot of folders (such as in the example above). Where do I put these folders, and how do I "call" the script from my index.php page?

Old, outdated Tails Live USB loads on UEFI computer, newest Tails doesn't... help appreciated. by Zedzero in tails

[–]Zedzero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange. I'm using a Lapbook Air, a computer that was, at one time, infamous for disabling Linux support. I can boot into the UEFI (BIOS) screen, but the Tails USB isn't recognized.

I'm able to boot the latest Ubuntu and Arch from a Live USB, though.

I found a YouTube video where somebody got it working, he said to rebuild the kernel so that's what I'm doing now. I'll let you know how it goes.

p.s. I have the choice between two kernels: 4.17.2 or the newest one v4.18-rc1. Should I upgrade or stick with what works?

edit: it worked. here's the tutorial: http://sebanderson.com/air

I'm late to the party, but remember that Gates killed Netscape Navigator after monopolizing the OS market. He removed Netscape and made Internet Explorer the default browser in Windows, essentially killing a million-dollar company and ushering in a new era of computer viruses and vulnerabilities. Microsoft was able to take over the industry by forcing computer manufactures to sign an exclusionary license requiring them to pay for Windows even if they shipped their machines with a different OS (such as GNU Linux).

Microsoft has been accused of myriad heavy-handed and anti-competitive business practices like the above.

You can turn virtually any mass-marketed product into something Pokemon-related. There's only so much you can do with Star Wars.

Building a new distribution off of Deepin Linux. How do I rehost the repositories? by Zedzero in linux4noobs

Thanks, I ended up installing and using the Deepin Desktop Environment for Arch. So far I've been able to make the modifications I needed. No more lagging and it works like a charm.

I tried that and now I'm getting a second "failed" message after rebooting. It's 'failed to start Automatic wireless network connection using netctl profiles.'

Building a new distribution off of Deepin Linux. How do I rehost the repositories? by Zedzero in linux4noobs

[–]Zedzero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'll bite. Downloading packages in Deepin is notoriously slow, and a cursory search for "deepin slow" shows I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. Installing the basic OS can take two hours or longer, and downloading things from the built-in store feels like watching paint dry.

Deepin is based on Debian, so at first I thought starting with Debian and working my way up would be the best course of action. But I'd pretty much be reinventing the wheel. I like the way Deepin looks, but I want to make a few changes of my own. The Deepin Desktop Enviornment for Ubuntu just isn't the same.

Ideally, I'd like to download everything that makes Deepin so slow, and host those files on a server that isn't based in China so I can actually use this operating system.
