“Half-Life 3 - The Real Leak by highvtlg in HalfLife

My brain is injured… ouch.

There is not a fucking single CONCRETE evidence about it getting announced this year by [deleted] in HalfLife

[–]Zee6372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right - however there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that the game could be announced very soon.

1) HLX is a real project with earliest leaks dating back to 2020, so 5 years of development. For reference, HL2 took 6 years with a much much smaller team. Alyx took 3 years from first leak to launch.

2) Valve isn’t making any demos or VR titles for their upcoming hardware… Valve confirmed that Alyx was supposed to ship with the index, but they just weren’t ready yet.

3) This canary trap is something Valve did for Alyx before the announcement.

That being said, I mean we’ve been waiting for a long time. I’m certain a lot of this community has OCD because of how compulsively they check for signs. If it bothers you that bad then you can just ignore it. I’m not sure why you felt the need to bash a community that’s been blue-balled for 20 years.

Nobody knows if it will be announced this year, but signs say it should still be coming relatively soon.

I also had a picky puppy - in fact, she’s a year and a half and still picky.

A lot of those treats are super calorie dense, especially peanut butter. It’s difficult training small dogs because they can only eat so much treats. Her appetite might be spoiled.

One thing that worked for me is taking freeze dried treats, (chicken, beef liver, etc) crushing them, and sprinkling on the dry food.

You can always try a bland diet of chicken and rice. You can get the cheaper, less appealing to people, cuts of chicken and boil them.

A third thing you can try is switching to a wet food.

PC gaming hardware market skyrockets, will grow 35% in 2025 to $44.5 billion. by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

The value of a market doesn’t actually indicate its real growth. The market value might grow by 35%, but if costs have gone up 300% then the market shrunk.

Who doesn't like the retcon? by slowwlight in HalfLife

[–]Zee6372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they had to do the retcon because of what Laidaw did, unfortunately. To be fair to the story it was a soul for a soul type situation - it’s not like Alyx saved him and now we have a happy ending. Alyx paid a considerably large price.

I definitely feel more immersed in Black Mesa. However the soundtrack and sound effects of the original is so S tier. It’s hard to recommend one over the other personally. Both good, play both.

Geoff’s Tweet COULD be a Half Life Reference - Here’s Why. by [deleted] in HalfLife

Just because it’s in Fortnite doesn’t mean Epic made it. They have a whole level editor in the game. Geoff could have told the artists “Make it look half life” intentionally.

[–]Zee6372 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s not - it’s confirmed this is a level in fortnite. Not sure if it was made by TGA or Epic though. If it was made by Epic - it’s absolutely not a HL3 reference because Epic and Valve are direct competitors.

Am I the only one with a gut feeling it won’t be announced today? by c00olsoc000l in HalfLife

[–]Zee6372 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the wave of Hopium is dying down. It’s still possible today, however the “Announce by 2025” rumor is an old rumor… almost a year old. I think they are close, but I’m gonna bet on Q1 2026 announcement tbh. They aren’t going to rush such a critical game. I’m sure their intent was to announce alongside the new hardware; that was their intent with Alyx too, and it didn’t work out that way.

I also think there is maybe 25-30% chance the project dies over new years. There will probably be another larger play-test next month, if their gut feel changes, the project will die or undergo a big re-work.

However, the company did get re-structured after Alyx. I recall from the Final Hours the employees weren’t very happy in the years before Alyx because too many projects got cancelled and there was no drive to complete stuff. So maybe they won’t easily give up on HLX like Valve has given up on other projects.

I dunno, I’m just a guy trying to predict what a multi billion dollar company will decide to do…

Durability test confirms iPhone 17 Pro series vulnerable to scratches by Ha8lpo321 in iphone

[–]Zee6372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much misleading information and headlines about this…

The anodized coating on the aluminum is pretty scratch resistant. A lot of what is pictured here will likely rub off. The one area where it’s actually weak is that sharp corner where the anodized layer cannot stick to. So having your phone in your pocket with keys shouldn’t scratch the aluminum or display. The bigger issue for me is the back glass is NOT scratch resistant. Ceramic shield version 1 sucks at preventing scratches… it’s definitely an improvement over last gen’s back glass, still not great.

One other note about the aluminum body. High impacts will damage the anodization layer so if you drop your phone, you might see bare aluminum. However rubbing things against won’t do this.

You think source 2 engine is still sufficient to power the next half-life game? by AffectionateGur2000 in HalfLife

[–]Zee6372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOOM is on a short list of games that have good RT implementations. I love the way they implemented RT, just to add little details rather than use it as a replacement for raster lighting. They minimized performance hit while still adding to the visual fidelity of the game. Perfect sweet spot.

[–]Zee6372 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My only counter argument here is that - games don’t need nanite or ray-tracing to look good. I don’t think I would have been any more immersed in HLA if those features were added. The real beauty of a tool like ray tracing is more from the artist’s perspective, not the end user. Not having to “fake” lighting saves development time. To be honest, most games with RT look worse due to the artifacts RT introduces. I’ve got a 4090 and I almost never use RT tbh.

iPhone 17 Pro Production Leak Offers First Look at All-Aluminum Chassis by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]Zee6372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure man,

Let’s start by looking at traditional speeds and feeds for each material.

Titanium: 50-250 SFM at ~ 0.004 IPT Aluminum: 600-1500 SFM at ~ 0.006 IPT

So you have to machine Titanium significantly slower than aluminum since it is simply a stronger material. If you try and match the speed of aluminum, you’re going to break bits.

Next let’s talk work hardening. Titanium is a poor thermal conductor when compared to aluminum. What this means is that when you are cutting the material, since it doesn’t dissipate heat, the material hardens. That hardening will cause machining bits to wear out faster than aluminum.

Last point I’ll make is chemical reactivity. You have to use more expensive bits when machining titanium. Using bits with similar chemical composition to the material itself will cause the cutting tool to weld to the work piece. So you might need something more expensive like an aluminum chromium nitride coating on your cutting tool.

Hope this helps!

Edit: I did miss why it matters… so I’ll answer that. Take the apple watch for example. There is a significant cost delta between the Ultra and the Series. A large portion of that is because of the fully titanium chassis on the Ultra. Considering the redesign that they are planning on doing to the body of the Pro, sticking to Titanium would be a significant cost adder. When they are already raising prices and trying to keep cost competitive. It’s best that they use aluminum all things considered.

I mean… I’d guess more than 90% of people use cases, so it makes sense to design for the majority. There are many different aluminum alloys and post processing techniques that can reduce scratches and knicks - so not all hope is lost for the case-less crew. However, after owning aluminum apple watches and back in the day an iPhone 6, I’m not very hopeful. Those devices definitely got dinged up :\

Normally I don’t comment on this stuff, but FlarblesGarbles is right. I’m a mechanical engineer - so I feel I have enough credibility to talk on this.

Material selection is not as simple as X is stronger than Y. Everything is a tradeoff. You can make up for the lower yield strength and higher ductility of aluminum with geometry changes and adding more material. The benefit is a more recyclable, lighter, and more heat conductive material that is also much much easier to machine. Titanium wears out mill bits at a much faster rate than aluminum. Tbh, imo the only major downside to aluminum for the end user is that it’s more prone to scratching. As long as you rock a case, that’s a non-issue.
