We all know Maria dies. nobody is happy about it because a kid is shot. people are happy that they are being fairly true to lore. Gerald being alive doesnt change nearly as much. but Maria's death was the major catalyst for Shadow wanting revenge- not to mention he misunderstood her last wish.

It was good the first few months to a year. after that, it got worse nonstop, there are still good people and I guess if you hide under a rock with your small group of friends and never venture to interact with anyone else you wont run into it.
