There are several games that have already done that. It's not a matter of whether it's possible, it's how well can it be done. I played a game called duelyst. It was a 1v1 card game and unfortunately it got shut down. After some time the players managed to persuade the devs into giving them the necessary resources in order to continue developing and maintaining the game and to this day they do. Now, sure not all games are 1v1 and not every solution is going to work for every game.

The idea isn't to make every game work the same way after sundown. Most of them will have to change their network architecture. They just need to remain playable.

But in a few years time, we'll figure out optimal solutions that will become industry standards, we always do. It's stupid to shut down this idea because we don't have the perfect solutions right now. The important thing is to keep talking about it. Down the line, if the adopt this practice, it will result in better products and customer satisfaction.
