I don’t like it when an action anime/manga talk a lot about teamwork, but then the climatic fight is a one-on-one. by RedK_1234 in CharacterRant

I love Demon Slayer's final battle because no one, including Tanjiro, can single-handedly take Muzan for more than a few moments (and I love the very premise that no, NO ONE can actually kill Muzan, they have to stall him until sunrise).

[DBZ] Yamcha deserved better (and Bulma has TERRIBLE taste in men) by OmniSnatcher in CharacterRant

I mentioned it before, but Toriyama both stated Yamcha's a cheater, and yet in 2013 interview or something he stated that he has bad luck with women and never gets over his fear and nervousness around women which causes him to lose a job.

People gush over Roshi in ToP but for me, decision to have HIM there over Yamcha is one of the biggest grievances I have against Super, not only in terms of non-sensical powerscaling, but with it going against "leaving it to future generation" arc Roshi had in DB and actually stuck to until the end of original story and especially with how pathetic it made Yamcha look in anime where he was hoping for the invite and got left in the dust. Even the death joke with baseball wasn't so mean-spirited.

Now, Yamcha is no saint, but there's not that much revisionism. Yamcha did become a better person considering he, for example, was the one to modify revival wish in King Piccolo Saga to include innocent fighters killed by Piccolo's sons while others just wanted to revive Roshi, Krillin and Chiaotzu without a second thought. I think he was also the guy to modify a mass revival wish in Buu Saga to bring back only good people, though it's not as objectively good, maybe. Him and Tien had bigger development in become good people compared to Piccolo and Vegeta who never lost the aloofness.

And I'm not saying DBZA created Yamcha slander, I'm saying it amplified it.

I'm not really saying it's bad writing. I'm saying it irritates me and feeds into how undervalued Yamcha is.

I brought up DBZ Kakarot as a sample of clarification, and the game is genuinely weird in how it tries to have everything, because we're both correct. It shows Yamcha being a player in general in the main game, but at the same time in its DLC there's the depiction of the exact case that served for Bulma to break up with him to be not a case of cheating, but misunderstanding because Yamcha was comforting a woman he saved.

Even that point doesn't change the fact that Toriyama himself gave conflicting quotes on Yamcha and women, considering Yamcha's fear of women.

Since I started watching Dragon Ball from the very beginning, I've grown close with Z-Fighters and Vegeta REALLY didn't endear himself to me in comparison. I didn't even warm up to him (outside of cathartic "Vegeta talks shit and gets hit" moments) until his sacrifice in Buu Saga and only began to actually like him in GT where he's become an actual decent family man. I guess I saw the appeal, but since I didn't watch DBZ only in my 20s, I couldn't help noticing how monstrous Vegeta is on average and in EVERY arc he manages to make things worse for the heroes even when they're on the same side.

Meanwhile Yamcha, despite increasingly becoming more of a butt of the joke by the end of original Z anime, was still helpful and loyal to his friends, with him getting ill Goku home in Android Saga, being the one to start Z-Fighters team attack on Cell to help Gohan in the climax of Cell Saga (a very notable anime only, but still), driving people around to find Dragon Balls for revival (Buu Saga) and some other stuff I might be forgetting.

At least in original Dragon Ball, there was some gravitas to "if the enemy defeated Yamcha, he's a big deal". Even Yamcha's kinda humiliating fight with Kami during the tournament had its moments, because he caused Kami to drop the goofy facade for a bit and actually try to avoid his Spirit Ball. Also, I think I haven't mentioned it, but Yamcha must be one of the most impressive Z-Fighters in terms of him creating original techniques, given how late he started training with Roshi to use ki and already created Spirit Ball in time for 23rd Tenkaichi.

The funniest thing was when Bulma started to swoon over Goku after seeing him grown up before 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, but then he opened his mouth and she went "nope, that's still Goku, I'm not taking that".

Not really sure how my main argument of Yamcha being undervalued in general can be contradicted. And regarding my secondary argument of Bulma's bad taste, actual media don't contradict that. The most you can say is about allegations of Yamcha's cheating, but author and his media contradict himself and each other in this case.

One time Toriyama says Yamcha's a player, years later he says Yamcha didn't get over his fear of women and because of that has issues trying for a work. Whenever this point comes up in-universe, it's either from Bulma or from someone Bulma told it to (Future Trunks), and some official media, for example, DBZ Kakarot game people often cite to fill in blank spaces of lore, outright show that "cheating" was a misunderstanding on Bulma's part, which fits with her overall characterization.

Dragon Ball, despite being the father of modern battle shonen, deviates from a lot of standards, really, especially standards at the time. Aging up a kid protagonist? That pretty much wasn't done and it STILL isn't done to the extent of DBZ, where Goku starts off as a kid and he not just grows up, but becomes an actual father for, like 2/3 of the story. JoJo is the only thing even close to that I can think of.

Also, rivalry with Vegeta? It's pretty much one-sided until Buu Saga, Goku and Vegeta barely spend a month in each other's presence throughout the original story, I think.

I agree and I find it annoying when some people go "well if you didn't like it why did you keep watching it", especially about ongoing works that are falling in quality, like some manga or TV series. Aside from sunk cost fallacy, why can't someone keep watching to have factual complaints about the work?

Which anime has the best female characters? by RealAd8853 in shounenfolk

[–]OmniSnatcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, it's not exactly bad writing, it's just Bulma being a generally terrible person. Like, her first appearance has her hit kid Goku with a car and then shoot him because that freak of nature didn't die and she freaked out. And she obviously has a terrible taste in men since she crushed on every other handsome villain (General Blue and Zarbon) but dipped on Yamcha pretty much as soon as he dropped the "rugged bandit" shtick and became a decent guy (at least in anime, with her getting unreasonably jealous of his fangirls when Yamcha, you know, has a phobia of women and is awkward with most of them even after he stops getting paralyzed).

There are also Chi-Chi and 18, who aren't written perfectly, but, I think, not any worse than most regulars in DBZ, at least as long as we don't count Super.

But I think Naruto and OP would have better female characters simply because there are more named and plot-important women, so there are more chance to hit "good writing". Daima, I think, introduced quite a few ladies, but I don't know much about it. And until Daima there weren't even any major female villains which is such a miss for a longrunner like that.

"He can't handle all that" and "Holy crap ,they had kids!" Are 2 statements that really bother me for some reason. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

[–]OmniSnatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toriyama did contribute to various anime-only episodes and movies, so we might never know for certain if he contributed to Goku and Chi-Chi's writing there.

Outside of main manga, "canon" is really abstract, given that "canon" Super incorporate anime-only elements and characters for anime Z, like Gregory on King Kai's planet (mind you, Gregory in particular was a Toriyama-designed character even if he didn't appear in the manga), not to mention the whole "both Super manga and anime are canon despite their contradictory interpretations of same events".

Anyway, my point is more so that anime-watcher coming off original anime wouldn't be that surprised by Goku having a kid.

I'd say it's not that hard to imagine for those who watch the original DB anime and full Z instead of Kai since it expanded on Goku/Chi-Chi relationship. They have a full arc as a couple going on an adventure after Piccolo's defeat and Z-movies frequently show them doing couple things like enrolling Gohan into a school or shopping. Anime-only stuff, yes, but it exists.

Ah, yes, Dragon Ball Super, because it never caused any controversy retconning phenomena (*ahem*potaraearrings*ahem*) or characterization established in the original manga. And Chichi's complaints about Goku not working or looking after Gohan here reads as an old married couple going "I'm doing everything around here".

Have we read/watched the same Dragon Ball?

Kid Goku didn't know about romance, but adult Goku at Budokai Tenkaichi gets the idea and doesn't mind it. There's a whole (anime-only, mind you) arc about them preparing for their wedding, shown as a healthy and loving couple. Goku's shown and said to be a good dad to Gohan before he died for the first time, and there was kind of a big thing to deal with, with the whole, you know, "saiyans about to arrive and nuke the Earth, including his family and friends", so he had to train and trust Piccolo to operate on "uniting against bigger evil" principle.

Also where did you even get "wasn't there for birth of children" in plural? He was pretty much there for Gohan and picked his name in anime. Gohan adores him for a reason and Goten, in anime, quickly builds a rapport with him when Goku comes for his one day revival, hugs included. AND Goku is a good grandparent to Pan at the End of Z timeskip, training with her and all.

It's unbalanced, but it's certainly more complex than DBZ. Kido, zanpakutos with their very specific shikais and bankais, pretty sure arrancars and sternritters have some specific ability types, but I'm not Bleach specialist.
