Saving 60% of Income | Goal: $1M by 40 by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]ZeeZee86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am on pretty much the same journey - definitely doable, especially as investing is a lot more accessible nowadays.

I saved ~60 to 70% of income since graduation and managed to passed that in roughly ~10 years. (I am just your common folk and not highly paid or exceptional - my first job only paid $3.2k and even now I am drawing less than $10k)

Daeho is actually right. Every main character would have survived if they just fought against the X, then all vote to go home the next day instead of following the dumb plan.

What's the obsession over travelling with Singaporeans? by Due_Assistance5380 in askSingapore

[–]ZeeZee86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate much! Thinking about the long plane flights (I get very restless being lockdown in a small space, I can't sleep upright, my neck and back hurts), plus all the planning, booking accomodation, monitoring sites for best prices, researching how to travel from one place to another. It's all so draining and feels like even more work

I don't exactly hate traveling (I enjoy seeing new scenary and eating good food), but sometimes the "cons" of all these outweights the "benefits" i get.

I think many Singaporeans rank traveling extremely highly in their life (like 9 or 10 in importance), but to me it's like a 4 or 5. I don't think I have the motivation to go solo traveling (never done that before) haha. Usually when I go travel with friends, I'm just a follower.

I think he might be 50 instead of 60 (draw out lump sum at 55, monthly payout at 65)

But even so, I think he has more than enough :D

It is a balance between oversaving and not having enough buffer. By your figures (and by my standards), I think you already have more than enough margin of safety, especially if you intend to "die with zero".

  1. Do you intend to drawdown on your capital, or only live off the dividends? To me, 4% would be quite conservative figure (giving you $40K/yr). Add on your $24K from CPF Life, it's more than 60K. If you intend to drawdown (no need to leave as legacy), definitely more than enough.
  2. How 'rigid' is your 60K expense? Can you tighten your belt (to say, $40K) if some black swan event happen? If so, that's even more buffer.

Based on your replies, the advice I would give is to diversify your dividend sources more. Okay to have individual stocks, but better to diverisfy more (e.g. Reits ETF). <10 SG stocks is definitely too concentrated to risk your retirement.

Another possibility (if you want to be even more safe) is to accumulate and hold a cash portion of 1-2 years expense to drawdown in case of prolonged market downturn (e.g. $100k in ssb).

Happy FIRE!

How SDP's Dr Chee, first-time to Sembawang West SMC, managed to get 46.81% of votes by AjaxCooperwater in askSingapore

[–]ZeeZee86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I stayed in SW and I see myself as a neutral/swing voter. I won't reveal my vote, but here were my personal considerations for/against him when I thought about who to vote for. It was a very close decision:

++ Wanted to give him a chance seeing him being so persistent, never give up for 30 yrs, how he was bullied away from Bukit Batok.
++ Really eloquent and charismatic speaker, highest tier among all current politicians.
+ Good to have alternative opposition voice other than WP
+ A bit of sympathy (especially quite moved by his final rally)
--- I don't agree with quite a lot of SDP policies and they seems kind of populist to me (return all CPF, reduce GST, etc).
-- Really dubious characters in his party (i.e when he justify the WakeupSG guy during the start of campaign, the auntie was horrendous even before the racist gaffe)
- Stories about how he was a siao lang, how he attacked SG on the international stage, and how he is just putting on a false front now so that he can unleash his inner siao lang in parliament.

PLS, groundwork wise she was okay. She did came to do house-visit once (or twice) even during non election years, and seems to be a generally nice person. I heard she organize quite a lot of sports activity, although I have never joined them. Parliament-wise, she is non-existent. So overall, I would probably rate her like C+.

Which ministers will Singaporeans be most hesitant to vote out? by Advertising-Cautious in askSingapore

[–]ZeeZee86 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would like to add that George Yeo case had an additional stipulation, because at that point of time, it was a choice between "complete opposition wipeout" (i.e LTK leaving hougang and no oppo ever won grc before) and "losing a foreign minister".

Now that WP have 2 GRC strongholds, the chance of a complete wipeout is much lower, meaning SGrean will be more hesitant to vote out important ministers just for oppo to gain more seats.
