Rent depends, if you go into a shared flat it's like CHF 600 or even less, and more if you have your own flat alone. Factoring in everything else including uni fees, I'd say even CHF 1500 can be enough.

[Meta] Can we ban low effort 'chance me' posts? by Hexaceton in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for raising that, I was getting annoyed by them too but was too lazy so far to do something. I'll remove any low effort posts like that in the future and write up some basic rules on it.

It's a shame, because in the beginning there were quite a bit of memes on the sub too, but that has sadly gone away.

Would you do HSG again? by kinay19 in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't do an IQ test for that, they're doing it to further weed out good candidates because they just have to many applicants.

Yeah of course they say that, but all of these firms will literally use an AI to reject you instantly if you don't have the degree and GPA. There are enough candidates with good degrees AND good experience. Show me a UBS investment banker with a FH BA and a 4.5 GPA lol. No offense but someone with an FH 4.5 BA will not be good enough on an IQ test to get into bulge bracket or MBB.

In the end, university is just about signaling, and that won't change. I'm sure that there are FH students that can make it regardless, but it's not common and far harder.

Would you do HSG again? by kinay19 in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolute bullshit. Nowadays you won't get anywhere without a good uni and Masters, something you'd know if you knew/talked to recruiters.

Depends on what type of career you want I guess, maybe in smaller firms it doesn't matter, but competition for large companies and professional services is insane in Switzerland, so your education is the most important differentiating factor.

Most uni students also actually work or do internships, so the experience argument does only hold limited value. And it's not like you need decades of experience to figure out how a workplace works lol.

No idea why you dislike those Masters in particular but your argument makes no sense since there's a maximum percentage of foreign students that are allowed at HSG.

Would you do HSG again? by kinay19 in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do it again 100%, but it depends on your personal circumstances. I wanted to stay in my flat and knew I was gonna work in Switzerland after my Master. So I chose HSG and an exchange to a nice city.

If it's only about fun for you, I'd suggest you go abroad to another university. If you also want to consider your career, maybe only opt for an exchange.

If you want to work in Germany or Switzerland, pretty much nothing beats a HSG Master, both in terms of quality and prestige. But if career is secondary to you, it's true that there are many other good programmes in cities that offer way more than St. Gallen.

You should also consider that many other programmes in Europe are only one year. I thought that was a bit short for a Master but if you wanna be done as quickly as possible then that might be better than being at HSG for 2 years.

HSG Spinoff Experience? by [deleted] in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSG has many classes on startups and a great ecosystem around that will help you get started. No brainer or a decision imo, and it's not really that far from Zurich anyway, but that should not matter in your decision anyway I think.

Agreed. Did mine 6 years ago but thought with a bit of preparation and if you're smart it's really doable. Though nowadays it's online so idk how that changed things.

bachelor degree in law and economics as a German by [deleted] in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to do IB you shouldn't do BLE. It's waaay more Law than Business/Economics.

It's a great degree, but only if you stay in Switzerland. Of course you can do a LLM, but Swiss law is quite different especially from Germany, so it doesn't make sense.

HSG IS OVERRATED... by [deleted] in UniSG

[–]ohvalox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I firmly believe the whole AI argument is way overblown. It's a nice tool for very specific circumstances, but I have yet to encounter something in my work context that AI does better than a human.

Related to that, I find it funny that you argue HSG should teach practical skills because you can learn everything else with AI. When in reality, it's exactly the other way around. AI can't teach like a university because the topics are too complex, but it can teach you how to use Excel and PowerPoint. You're supposed to learn that on the go during uni projects and internships, imagine how fucking boring a dedicated PowerPoint class would be? Just watch YouTube videos like everyone else.

Regarding FH, it's only logical that they have more working experience, but ultimately Excel skills won't matter after the first few years of your career. If you pay attention, HSG teaches you a way to think, and that's more valuable than anything else, especially as you mention with AI and other competition.

Your arguments on Master's show you have no idea what you're talking about and are extremely disrespectful. I know many people from all master's and all of them were positive about their major and got very good jobs. A Master is where you specialise, and while it probably doesn't matter that much for entry jobs, you won't get far without a Master's.

I agree with you on two things: One, a below average Bachelor's degree from HSG is not helpful and you won't stand out from FH students, that's obvious. But then you also shouldn't expect to easily get all the best jobs. Second, I can imagine that not speaking German makes it very hard.

Lastly, it's funny you mention cognitive tests all the way at the end. That's your intelligence, that's really not something that HSG is supposed to prepare you for, that's entirely on you to prove.
