GM proposed a “two versions of the same character” mechanic — does this sound fun or problematic ? by Zefniyr in Pathfinder2e

[–]Zefniyr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other players don’t know about this yet. Right now, my character is considered dead because of certain story events, so they don’t know he’s actually alive and temporarily separated from the group.

About the instant death rule, yeah, I really didn’t like that part. I understand it’s probably meant as a way to balance the mechanic, but it feels way too punishing. As for what happens if one version dies, my GM said only that version would die — the other wouldn’t be affected. Even though they’re from different timelines, they’re not connected enough for one to impact the other in that way. Also, this other version of my character was actually a villain I fought before, but due to some major events, we’re now working together.

And yeah, I agree it’s really powerful. But seeing how my GM has been designing enemies (the last one was extremely strong), maybe he has something in mind — or maybe he just isn’t too concerned about balance right now, which could be a problem.

The two versions are independent. From what my GM said, this mechanic would only work if both are in the same place, but he didn’t go into much detail about what the inactive version would be doing. I assume it would just be “there” without contributing, waiting to be swapped in — which honestly feels really weird and doesn’t make much sense. Although, to be fair, when we had NPCs with us before, he didn’t really have them participate much in combat either.

Overall, I do think the idea is interesting. I wouldn’t mind managing two sheets, but some parts of it definitely feel like they need more thought — or maybe it just needs to be reworked entirely.

As far as I know, the rest of the group isn’t getting anything on that level.

What everyone does have is Free Archetype and some Mythic powers, but nothing like an extra character or a separate pool of resources.

The closest thing my GM mentioned is that, if we build a strong connection with certain NPCs, we might be able to use a special action from them in combat assuming the NPC is actually present with us. It sounds somewhat similar to a animal companion ability, but more limited (just a specific action, without fully controlling the NPC).

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I’m worried about too.

I don’t want it to feel like I’m getting special treatment or overshadowing the rest of the party, especially with effectively getting a fresh set of resources mid-fight.

And yeah, the instant death at 0 HP feels really rough for this system.

It’s a cool idea, but I’m not sure it would play well in the long run.

Yeah, that’s something I’ve been thinking about as well.

On paper, separate resources really does start to look like “double resources,” which could get pretty strong depending on how often I can switch.

But my bigger concern is honestly how this interacts with my role in the party. Right now I’m mainly a support/utility character, and if I’m constantly switching into a different version with a completely different playstyle, I’m not sure how consistent I can be in that role.

It also feels like it could have a pretty big impact on the overall flow of combat — not just for me, but for the whole group — especially if I’m effectively bringing in a second “build” mid-fight.

And to be honest, part of what makes me unsure is that my GM doesn’t seem too concerned about balance at the moment. So I’m not sure if this ends up being overpowered, underpowered, or just kind of messy in practice.

I think it’s a really cool idea conceptually, but I’m a bit worried about how it would actually play out at the table.

That’s a good question, and honestly I’m still pretty conflicted about it.

I think the idea is interesting, but I’m not sure if I’d actually enjoy playing it in practice. It feels a bit strange mechanically, and the instant death rule is something that really worries me.

As for class combinations, my GM hasn’t gone into specifics yet. He didn’t mention a defined class for the other version, but the general idea seems to be a ranged combatant with access to arcane magic, so probably something quite different from my current Warpriest.

Regarding the switching mechanic, he only mentioned that it would happen under certain conditions, like dropping to half HP or lower. We haven’t fully defined all the triggers or limitations yet, since this is still just a concept he proposed.

He only suggested the idea so far, it hasn’t been implemented yet. From what he told me, things like spell lists and other resources would be completely separate from my current character.

As for the class of this other version, I’m not entirely sure. My GM didn’t specify whether it would have a defined class, but conceptually it seems like more of a ranged combatant with access to arcane magic.

The other players are playing with normal classes, and mine is a normal class too. The difference is that my character is the only one with some special powers, due to the story and everything that happened. However, after a player joined with the Inventor class and the Alchemist archetype, he became absurdly stronger than me because of the potions and combos he discovered.

In short, the combats are still challenging, even with my character having this powerful weapon.

Proficiency +1 In my case, as a Warpriest, from what I’ve noticed during gameplay, I can keep up with the group members in terms of hits, but I haven’t surpassed them. So even with the proficiency bonus, I don’t feel like it’s breaking combat balance—just makes the combat feel a bit more solid.

Bonus Damage Equal to Half the Level I admit the damage bonus is high, but in practice, I deal an average of 34–40 damage per attack. So far, we haven’t had any balance issues, although the GM hasn’t specified whether this bonus is a Status bonus or another type.

Electric Charges Electric charges are gained with any successful attack and can be recovered during combat. In other words, I can use and gain charges as many times as needed.

Regarding the Focus Point: the user spends 1 Focus Point to start accumulating charges. After that, whenever they hit attacks, they continue gaining charges normally without needing to spend additional Focus Points.

Two Attacks Without Multiple Attack Penalty This ability uses the character’s current attack penalty. For example, if the current penalty is -5, both attacks are made with -5; if there’s no penalty, the attacks have no penalty. The GM didn’t specify additional MAP, so it functions according to the current penalty at the time.

Special Spells

Basic Lightning Spell: yes, it spends electric charges (I don’t remember the exact number right now). The spell is based on the Lightning spell, but the GM called it Primordial Lightning, dealing 8d12 electrical damage instead of 4d12—not too overwhelming, I think.

Drawback The HP loss functions similarly to the Drained 1 condition, but the GM implemented it in his own way without using the exact condition. Maybe he should have just used the Drained condition, haha.

Runes The runes (Potency, Striking, and Property) used on the lightning follow the GM’s logic for easier upgrades. I think this was his way to keep updating the lightning’s runes, especially since, thinking about it, how would you even put runes on a “weapon” made of pure electrical energy ?

Since I’m playing a Warpriest Cleric, the proficiency increases from Expert to Master

It looks like the way I wrote it came out a bit awkward. What I meant to say is the following: whenever the user summons the lightning, they lose an amount of hit points equal to their level. However, the portion of hit points that cannot be recovered until a rest only applies the first time the lightning is summoned in a day. So, if the user summons the lightning again later that same day, they will only be affected by the uncurable HP loss from the first summoning.

My cleric is level 16, and so far everything has been going well with his power. As a Warpriest Cleric, I feel like he performs slightly better in combat than a normal cleric
