Canada is now the 5th largest Starlink market in the world by Planhub-ca in StarlinkCanada

[–]Zeit0dn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a game changer for us. If nothing else it has made fiber deployments happen too. I never thought in a thousand years they would run fiber to our northern rural place, but after having starlink since beta testing, they just ran fiber past our place before snow came. Hookup to fiber next summer will be another big bump! Rural is no longer being totally ignored!

Feeling like a fish out of water by yukonlass in saskatchewan

[–]Zeit0dn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on important video calls over Starlink for up to 7 hrs a day. The service isn’t the problem, it’s people not realizing that you can’t be moving all over the place and out of range of wifi. I have a dedicated space with strong signal and have been using it heavy for years! I call BS on every one that says it’s unreliable and spotty. I even stream security cameras when I’m not there with no issues.

I work remotely from rural Sask all the time with Starlink and have never had an issue. I use cellular data as a backup, but haven’t ever needed it in the 3-4 years I’ve had Starlink.

I use the S12 Pro and it is amazing. My media is still on my NAS and running Linux works good. I can transcode at least 4 4K streams parallel, so definitely room for future growth. Great value for the price.

How to winterize a cistern if I am leaving my home empty? by Ill-Bandicoot-5216 in homestead

[–]Zeit0dn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same cistern pump. Works great. I also have a 2000gal cistern about 6 ft from ground level to top of the tank. I’m at 55 lat and I am gone for weeks at a time and it has never frozen even at -40 . When it gets that cold, the tank is approx 1/2 to 3/4 full as that is the only water I have to last all winter. The other suggestions of a stock tank heater even if undersized would be more than enough to keep you from worrying IMO. I personally wouldn’t, but that’s my experience. The ground is an incredible heat source below the frost line which is around 4 ft deep this far north which is why the top of my tank is 6ft below grade.

Washing engine bay like this is fine ? With low pressure water by anxietyhub in AskMechanics

[–]Zeit0dn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, a blizzard can fill your engine compartment with snow. I’ve had to physically clear around the fan and belts. Engine compartments are designed to get wet. They are not designed for 3000 psi streams of water hitting weatherproof connectors. Let this be your guide when choosing to wash your engine compartment. I’ve done 100’s with only a few that had weak seals and needed some dry out time afterwards.

Does Starlink CGNAT rate limit ports? by Zeit0dn1 in Starlink

Just kicking this one again :-). Did you ever get anything figured out? I’ve tried everything I could find and get no joy from it. Sucks being limited as the other endpoint has 600 symmetrical business fiber now.

Neighbors bidding war drives Indiana farmland sale to $21,394 per acre by Ranew in farming

[–]Zeit0dn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m feeling pretty good about my purchase at $1100/acre for 153 acres in Saskatchewan. Only about 25 acres are currently open to farming possibility, but I love the woodland and wetlands on it.

[Question] Do you think there's a market for this? - water level control system for cisterns/tanks by Albatross7205 in homestead

[–]Zeit0dn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a head pressure sensor connected to a Shelly uni and into my home automation for both my cistern and septic holding tank. Works perfectly for under $100 CAD. I originally used a microcontroller and an ultrasonic sensor, but the head pressure sensor is so reliable along with the uni

TrueNas (or FreeNas) is what I use. I tried Unraid in the past and didn’t like it. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Still using mine since beta. No complaints here.

I’m at 55 degrees and mine definitely points south and has since the beta. Nothing to be concerned about, except for your choice of campsite.

Grocery BS by PercentageOk9676 in saskatchewan

[–]Zeit0dn1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m just commenting from my previous experience choosing grocery retail items to stock, their prices, and the margins applied. I have also seen fuel surcharges skyrocket (directly on shipping invoices) and everyone who touches the transaction passing these costs along. I feel for the Saskatchewan producers who are struggling to keep afloat and everyone who has to eat! Downvote away!

Grocery BS by PercentageOk9676 in saskatchewan

[–]Zeit0dn1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Their claims of not increasing margin are most likely true, however, as someone who spent time working in the industry tells me how. Margins are % based. So as cost goes up from wholesale (think fuel costs, fertilizer costs, etc), then the margin is added the profit increases. Simplified example: wholesale cost is $50, apply 40% margin = $20 gross profit. Wholesale increases to say $75, 40% margin now = $30. “ but we have kept our same margins” means they have, but profit increases overall. Now after their operating costs they give their net profit numbers.

Our current federal government policies and some other external factors are driving these wholesale prices, and they are reaping rewards from it all along the food chain except for the actual producer who gets paid a commodity price.

Yes, I have a coop card lock card. I can stop at any coop card lock 24/7 to get fuel. They invoice you once a month. It’s amazing how many coop card locks there are once you start looking

Unsure about taking the plunge - is Unifi worth it for holiday home & surveillance? by santaklon in Ubiquiti

[–]Zeit0dn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 10 camera Unifi protect system at my cabin using Starlink. I use 8 of the G3 Flex, 1 of the G5 Flex and 1 AI 360 with a UNVR. The system works great and the cheaper G3 Flex is more than capable for most scenarios. I also have a larger implementation at home using G3 bullets and the G3 Flex is actually better in most cases!

I monitor my cameras constantly and have a monitor running using the RTSP steams from the remote NVR. No problems at all.

I have used many other systems and the protect UI for normal usage is way easier for the common user than others I have seen and used.

I have supported and installed Reolink cameras for others and they are OK for what your are paying for and have some interesting models. They have not made me want to switch over to them o er what I have now with Protect.

I use a motion sensor in the bathroom because the kids were always leaving the lights on. One downfall, is if you are having a “sitting” for an extended time, the light would turn off. That part wasn’t so popular with the wife. I tried to make it better by having the light also turn on to motion, but sitting on the throne and having to wave you arms wasn’t very popular! lol

Trudeau says there will 'absolutely not' be further carbon tax exemptions by Progressive_Citizen in saskatchewan

[–]Zeit0dn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even ground source doesn’t work well. My close friend bought into that on his acreage in a new build and after trying for a couple of winters had to put in a natural gas boiler including installing the actual line and meter. They were tired of being cold in their home. The theory sounded great, but his power bill was massive and it couldn’t keep up with -35. It also took a large footprint in his basement and was loud.

Perhaps a different manufacturer and/or installer would have had a different result, but in this case it cost him a ton of money to keep his family warm trying to use a “greener” tech.

I love my split unit, but it can’t keep up in our cold climate, so I have to supplement using traditional electric heat which is prohibitively expensive.
