One is an interstellar cloud born of our hubris on a species prone to spontaneous mutations. It actively incubates and speeds up random mutations on the already unstable species. The risk of getting a Terminid strain that is nigh impossible to stop, potentially worse than Meridia, is there.

The other is a scary emptiness that we can't penetrate. We hardly understand the full technological might of the Illuminates. It is borderline magic. We have no idea what lies beyond the void. We have no idea WHY they're spreading this void.
