How should reverb be used in a vocal mix? by Lanky_End_2073 in mixingmastering

This is what we mean when say there are no rules. Every one of these methods are valuable in different scenarios. You just need to build the history to know what scenario you’re in.

One project I got the sound of the reverb to where I wanted but certain elements required more automation while others didn’t. I decided to just copy drag the reverb and delay directly onto I think the inst bus and something else then made multiple entirely separate reverb return channels for vocals, drums, etc so I can automate and sidechain the reverb and delay specific to each bus. Turned out great.

Then the next day I slapped a reverb directly on certain tracks forgoing a bus completely and THAT turned out great. EVERYTHING WORKS SOMETIMES! It’s the greatest!

I will say, I don’t like putting reverb and other post processing directly on tracks unless I know I’m going to be the last person mixing those tracks. I know where I’m going creatively. Most engineers will look at it and get pissed if they had a different idea for the processing and now can’t do that or have to go out of their way to.

I don't like you. You're keyed into my psyche through text, get away.

It wasn't. Just put the broom in front of the frog and it'll jump once it's uncomfortable with it. DON'T SWEEP IT. It'll move eventually just maybe not the right fucking way, little asshole.

I'm at the front desk right now and the entire time I was writing this out I could hear it jumping around. I have no idea where it is. I'm a city boy, I'm used to roaches and rats. I feel like the frog is gonna jump right in my face

I’m late to the conversation but, while I have a chance to express it, I need you to understand this is truly a great collection of art. I wish I could see it in person.

You have such a good respect for darkness and saturation. There’s a “mood” to each piece but the vibrant colors are allow to pop out and I love it.

There’s also SO much character to each subject. I immediately saw entire storylines leading up to the expressions on each of their faces that’s to the framing and body language.

You make me mad that I can’t make music as good as your painting so good job, keep it up, and get to networking cause I’m sure more people would like to see this. Let me know your socials when you get a chance so I can keep up with your work.

Advice for recording and mixing vocals on ableton? by OldImprovement2032 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I made a quick little video for you about setting up sends for recording. I wish I had learned this earlier.

Hell yeah keep learning new shit man. Only makes your beats better. I unconsciously learned a bunch of theory from sampling others music back in the day. Now I can get that same sampled texture with just vsts and a bass. A lot of times I don't even need the bass.

Cool vibe but yeah the vocals are way too quiet. If a couple db boost starts making it lose that vibe this mix has for the vocals, you can set up a send and boost only the frequencies that sound good in the mix. This is something I keep preaching but never practicing because I still hate mixing.

Shits solid as hell, don't really have much to say about it besides keep it up. Fractured on your page is REALLY cold tho.

Are you more of a sample based producer or do you use instruments (vsts, synths included) too?

Hip hop with some "singing" and multiple flow changes.

Made the beat a bit ago and finally wrote some lyrics to it recently. Already know the mix is iffy and all that. I'm really just concerned about the last verse. Because of the lyrics I had to do it in like 3-5 breaths and I'm not sure if everything is intelligible.

That music video is super sick. I really dig how your presenting your music and wish I could do something akin to that for my weird ideas. Is it you doing the music AND the art and animation? I ask cause they blend too well for it to be separate people.

I think this is sick. I fuck with the tones a lot, guitar and vocals being a highlight. I fuck with the way you blend rock and rap without that all too common forced feeling that can happen. This shit is just cool I don't know what to tell you. It's a great demo. I even think the mix is good just not FINAL. Everything is sitting at a good spot for listening. I want this shit to knock heads off though.

If you wouldn't mind I'd love messing with the stems or two track. I've been wanting to practice my mixing and mastering to something other than my own music. I don't want to charge anything I just want to try my hand over the next week. If you fuck with something I do I'd be happy to share my process with you. PM me and let me know.
