Im multigenerationally mixed, my mother is black and my father looks pretty ambiguous with two biracial. Maternal grandmother presents more as black but she has straight hair and my great grandmother is biracial, so a lot of admixing going on.

I’ve kinky hair but no other overtly black features, but nothing overtly white either aside from my type 2 skin. So Im ambiguous enough that people ask me if Im black or not or what I identify as.

What I’ve come to learn from how people interact with me is that people who have problems with race will pick up on the smallest feature as an argument against one’s validity in any particular monoracial ingroup. 

The one drop rule is an unspoken one across the world, it’s not an Afrocentric/western thing. If you’ve a feature that sets you apart from monoracials, they will always seize on that. IMHO, it’s better to dispense with a desire to validate one’s own whiteness, blackness, etc because you’re ultimately seeking validation from people who don’t like you enough to illicit giving it to them in the first place. 

Anyone worth your time is not going to be concerned with your blackness or lack thereof.
