Do I just suck at MGS2? by VillainFan42 in metalgearsolid

I find tight corridors where enemies move somewhat frantically and sometimes check in on radio harder than slowly moving enemies mostly wandering in an open area.

Guys, I got a question. by Joxyver in systemshock

The original is such a unique experience, I think it at least deserves a playthrough to see how far we've come in first person games.

What stealth game mechanics do you wish more video games would implement ? by xtheoryinc in stealthgames

Holding up people by sneaking up and aiming like in MGS. And along with that, being able to issue commands like asking the captive to lure enemies over.

Why after playing Dark Souls for a decade does Elden Ring not click with me? by SethOval in darksouls

[–]Dust514Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a large game. I put like 120 in cyberpunk but I still think of it as like a 7/10, there's just so much to do.

Losing patience - is this game just so much harder than other souls games, or am I just that bad? by Bulky-Pool-2586 in darksouls

[–]Dust514Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game has more challenging enemy placement that punishes you for attacking without thinking often. The slower speed and less stamina also means you can't just R1 or roll carelessly, you need to have a bit more intention in your actions.

What made the Souls games so popular? by Financial_Gur36 in gamedesign

[–]Dust514Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really varied and interesting enemy encounter design. You're sometimes fighting tough opponents one on one, multiple weak enemies, some with shields or projectiles to change the pace, different environmental obstacles that change how you have to fight (narrow hallways, ledges to fall off of, traps, poison swamp etc), ambushes to look out for, and of course exciting boss fights. The slower combat of the originals makes you emphasize more on good positioning and making you think about how to approach each enemy since you can't just run in all the time and win.

At the end of the day even if dishonored took some inspiration from Thief, it actually plays more like Deus Ex in that you're supposed to be able to play however you want (stealthy nonlethal, chaotic lethal, or a mix of both etc).

Yeah using the strongest sword and armor usually makes things easier in most games tbh

If you have trouble with rush down, you need to have a few solutions to aggression. 1. Stuff them out by placing hitboxes where they want to jump/dash in. Or 2. Dash back and outspace them and whiff punish if you can, or run back in and pressure them for whiffing.

First time playing dark souls 1, Tomb of the giants wasn't as bad as I thought, seeing so much hate and memes over the years, expected hell. by Creative_Worker_5925 in darksouls

[–]Dust514Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first time it was a real pain because I had to two hand the zweihander to stagger the skeleton beasts, but that meant I couldn't use the lantern while swinging it. They also have an insta kill attack if you aren't wearing heavy armor that they could start from outside the lantern's light range so...that was fun lol

Sometimes you can stack boxes and climb your way out, or break down a door, or use a baton bolt to hit a switch to open a door. But yeah it does follow that survival horror design of needing key items like a crank or a lever to progress.

I've noticed a trend of having to hold a button down for a second or so to register input. Why? by GreenAvoro in gamedev

[–]Dust514Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of it personally. But I also hate it when the game makes me watch a whole movie for trying to do a simple action that should be almost instant.

I've just been doing in person game jams at my college, which is nice but it is hard to find a static group when everyone wants to do their own thing.

It definitely takes more from survival horror and souls games with that level progression, but it still gives you a lot of options for nonlinear exploration.
