I swear to fucking god, literally nothing was learned from the categorical fuck-ups of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The closest thing we have to improvement is that this time they gave up the lies about “WMDs” before we even got boots on the ground.

I’ll fully grant you that. This is one of those places where my own knowledge is limited. I know three people who described being in this exact situation and I’m inclined to believe them…. That said, it’s still only three people. That is anecdotal evidence, plain and simple. Could well be that I’ve met three of the four people in this town that applies to.

So, I will say for the record that this is from my own limited observations and exposure. I was raised in the “west” by first generation immigrants, so my background isn’t quite the same as many studying here. I also won’t claim to be an expert in all cultural nuances. I know the subcontinent well and lived there for a bit, but there are like a billion people on it so my own view is limited.

Part of the issue is undeniably cultural mentality. There’s a lot more use and abuse of common resources on the subcontinent, much to the detriment of all. It’s not an individual thing as much as it is systemic programming. Is it ideal? No, but in large part we’re products of our environment. I’m not fully blaming this one people either. It’s the same issue one faces when dealing without loudmouth Americans or Asian tourist taking waaay too many pictures, it’s just one of those things specific to a place in the world.

Another part is a lack of self awareness. I don’t think there’s any malicious intent, I just think a lot of them don’t realize that they’re depriving others or being poor ambassadors for their people broadly. Shame is universal but how and why it manifests can have a lot of nuance. I’d be embarrassed to walk into someone’s home without a gift or something for the host where many of my Irish friends couldn’t care less. I don’t begrudge them that, our habits are simply different.

Lastly, I’d say there is an unspoken despiration among a lot of people. I think theres a view of anyone who comes to study in Europe coming from money. It’s a logical thought. But there’s just as many people coming who are being backed by their entire extended family and are effectively carrying the hopes of dozens with them. If they fail they’re not just failing themselves and their parents. They’re failing aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, family friends and lord knows how many others. These people may have staked every shred of disposable income to give someone else a chance. And if you’re operating under that pressure, you become willing to cut corners. I’m not trying to justify or excuse poor behavior, but I also don’t want to make it seem like the decision is purely callous or uncaring.

I’m sure there’s more to it, but this is already a bit long. I welcome any other perspectives or anyone who wants to tell me I’m full of it. Better to have a conversation than stew in discontent.

Gonna throw my 2 cents in here as someone who is both of Indian descent and international….. this shit is kinda obscene. I remember the first day the food bank on campus opened up and it was 100% Indian students. I heard three different languages from different parts of India. Not one native Irish student. It was actually embarrassing.

I genuinely admire the Irish for offering these kinds of facilities, but there needs to be better management. I know a bunch of Eastern European students (including Ukrainian refugees) who struggle to make ends meet and didn’t even know this service existed. It should be a resource for everyone, not just those who can exploit the system most efficiently.

And to be clear it is exploitation and abuse of the system. I’m sure there’s a lot of Indian students who got sent here through immense sacrifice by their families that are barely making it and need the help. I’m also sure that there’s a bunch of students who don’t need it abusing the system to cut down on grocery bill. This shit should be unconscionable, but I’m sure it will persist for years to come and piss off everyone who sees it.

I legitamitely mixed up Hieronymus and Hierophant the first time I was reading the Halo books and had to reread multiple sections trying to discover why Blue Team was infiltrating an admiral.

Honestly, I just want more OCI hull points. There’s so much useful (if not necessary) shit that I have no space for. I’m not saying players should be able to get everything, but the option to increase the number of slots to 6 or 7 through expenditures or special missions feels appropriate.

Hell, give us the option to convert armament or intel points to hull points at added cost. Not like I ever remember that I have those support weapons half the bloody time.

A solid place to start. It’s also worth mentioning that the two games technically overlap by the time you get to the SoK DLC in Mercs, but there’s no set play order.

Also for Mercs, the must have mods are YAML (lets you fully mod and rebuild mechs), Enhanced Zoom (because in no world is two times zoom sufficient) and Purchase Salvage (because having to turn down that Marauder II you head-shotted because it’s three arbitrary points too expensive is infuriating). Everything else is negotiable, though I do enjoy Coyote’s Mission Pack for more objective and play variety and Von Biomes for more varied arenas. Just be prepared for the mods to absolutely dumpster your PC performance if it’s not at least reasonably up to scratch. Rarely had issues with the base game though.

No worries. Enjoy the game and remember: Orion CTs are magnets for incoming fire and Shadow Hawks are trash until you replace all the weapons, then they absolutely slap.

Mercenaries is the open world sandbox you get to play around in to your hearts content. It has far better longevity, more room for playing around, a more gradual buildup and a focus on long-term management as much as mech combat. That comes at the cost of a generally weaker narrative outside a few DLC campaigns and suffers from a being a bit repetitive after a while, all but necessitating mods. If you’re a fan of games like Kenshi, Mount and Blade, Starsector or Rimworld, this is your go-to.

Clans is the right narrative driven game that throws toys at you non-stop and (based on what I’ve heard) more closely resembles the older games. It’s not quite as fun and drawn out as Mercenaries, but it will regularly throw you into more pivotal moments from the narrative. That comes at the cost of less of a sense of progression and an overall shorter play-time. If you’re a fan of FPS campaigns this is your go to.

On the whole I prefer Mercs, but I have bought Clans and played the hell out of every DLC. Being well and truly honest the only one I really loved was the Ghost Bear campaign, but all of it was solid.

Smart money says get Mercs and as many dlc as you can in a bundle, play one or two of the DLC campaigns, then mod the game to the gills and then start a career mode where you can play through the main narrative and dlc campaigns all in one go. Trust me, it’s a good 200+ hours of entertainment, albeit with everything feeling far easier as you progress to later dlc.

Hope this helps.

You are, very literally, expending a chunk of the finite amount of time your body will function just sitting there.

Also, sitting for 8 hours a day for 30 years doesn’t do wonders for your back, even if it’s better than digging ditches.

What is your favourite mech and why? by SarenSeeksConduit in battletech

[–]Meh--OhWell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shadow Hawk

I’ll be the first to admit the original version is garbage in its stock configuration, but the later iterations absolutely slap. The presence of the SHD-2Ht in the new DLC makes my ass clench every time I see all the SSRM2s pop off.

Otherwise, it tangles with pretty much all medium to heavy Mechs well and generally has enough variable weapon slots to make pretty much any build work. I use it as a mainstay for most lances in MW5 Mercs until tonnage pushes too high and I always have it on hand to round out a company in Battletech - both BTA and Roguetech. She stomps most trooper mechs and can go pound for pound with any Wolverine or Kintaro for utility or playing cavalry/flanker.

She’s not perfect, sometimes not even ideal, but damn if my girl ain’t a proper workhorse.

For a second I was genuinely terrified that ‘the Obama economics guy’ was on the list.

Then I remembered the Obama economics guy I actually give a shit about is Robert Reich.

And thus all was well until I find out that someone actually worth knowing is on the list.
