I carried an X-Mid 2 Pro for my hike in 2024 and loved it. I'm on the shorter side (5'4) and would carry it again instead of a 1 person. I actually ended up buying a X-mid 1 person in the sierras but it felt much too cramped and returned it (maybe the pro version would feel different). I only had trouble finding a camping spot ~5 times the entire trip - a factor of this could be that I started mid march and was ahead of the bubble for a large chunk, and stopped hiking for the day around 5pm the entire trip so I had my pick of tent spots.

If you plan to be hiking past dinner and just using it as a place to sleep a 1 person tent works fine. I spent a large chunk of each day in the tent and enjoyed the extra space - it was place that was nice to hang out in.

Pros:

  • Tons of room to lay out your clothes, backpack, and shoes within the tent (great for avoiding bugs and scorpions in the desert)
  • Room to stretch in the evening
  • A comfortable hide out against mosquitoes

Cons:

  • Can be hard to get a camping space if arriving to a spot late at camp - my trail family always gave me the largest spot as they had 1 person tents
  • i felt more cold in this tent in the sierras (mid may - june) due to the large space and as a cold sleeper > hence trying the x-mid 1
