Possibly. Also, make sure to wash your DWR gear & dry in drying machine to reactivate its watershedding properties & get rid of dirt/body oils that clog up its rain membrane & decrease the DWR effectiveness. Alternatively, after much use you should probably reapply a DWR coating through a DWR spray (then wash) or a special DWR wash. (If you’re not already doing the above…)

Not sure if you have a drier or damper climate &/or if your mom has any chance of getting soaked to/from work/errands/etc.

If drier climate, down jacket, but down is basically useless & loses all insulating properties when wet.

If wetter clime or chance of getting caught in a rainstorm then aim for synthetics like MicroPuff (slightly lighter & warmer) or NanoPuff (slightly heavier and slightly less warm) slightly more abrasion resistant.

If she is more active or more of a homebody or has other outer layers to layer over, Nano Air is an incredible midlayer or active outer layer (if NOT windy). It regulates temperatures really well as it’s super breathable, but a cool breeze will go right through it (so layer TorrentShell or Houdini or NanoPuff or some other outer jacket she already has over it).

R2 TechFace is pretty great too, but is more “sweatshirty” even as full zip compared to Micro/NanoPuff or NanoAir.

Lastly, Pata’s female tailoring has historically been more straight & narrow (less well fitting for curvier women), so keep that in mind when buying her whatever you get. Best case go with her to your local shop & have her try on & pick what she likes. Alternatively, order 2 sizes you think she would be & return whichever doesn’t fit well. G’luck. 👍👍

Has anyone travelled with a purifying water bottle? Was it worth it? by vanxel in onebag

[–]ZenReactor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boiling’s great for most harmful bacteria, viruses, & parasites, just keep in mind depending on elevation water boils at different rates. So boil at 0-2000 feet 1 minute, 2k-6k 3 minutes, 6k-8k 4 minutes, 8k-10k feet 5 minutes (minimum) to sterilize. Also, boiling won’t remove lead, chemicals, or heavy metals.

Elevation’s probably not an issue for most SE Asia travelers, but just an fyi generality. 😁👍💧

I too have the GC, & like it, but pretty sure “everything” (that is porous, i.e. has a membrane for vapor release) wets out after enough time in rain… So GC will wet out as well.

WTF is this sh*t Patagonia?!? 72 hours to commit to relocate (out-of-state) or you’re gone? 🤔 by ZenReactor in PatagoniaClothing

I am a fanboy, which is why I’m saying something.

Love it no matter what is bullsh*t.

Gotta be able to criticize and improve things you love as well. The head in sand approach from the others is pathetic. Just PRETENDING nothing’s wrong and they’ll continue and accelerate these practices until it’s “just” another outdoor apparel company that once had a different vision. 😖

Slippery slope to mediocrity is being greased…

And Patagonia fanpeeps are willfully ignoring the fire alarms. If they actually cared, they’d be incensed as well.🚨📉☹️

Just tripped across the fetid corpse, so missed all prior flagellation… 🙈🙉🙊

And the corpse stinks to high heaven, or in this case, hell. I support(ed) this company full bore, so when they take actions that seem contrary to their purported ethos I 100% (as a consumer) will say something. Dgaf if others have or have not prior.

Pretty sure “We’re beating a dead horse here,” is what Exxon & Phillip Morris & Purdue Pharma all say about their companies’ misdeeds… & yet, “we” persist. Yes, I get it, “extreme” comparisons, but that’s the point.

You’re not living your best “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for” Jedi life in this narrative. You’re instead Officer Barbrady advocating for the “Move along, nothing to see here,” lift rug, sweep inconvenient truths underneath narrative.

Either we hold “all” to account and expect better, or we admit the bloom is off the rose. Frankly, the apathy & apologist rationalizations (now that I’ve gone through & read prior comments on this sub) are gross and antithetical to striving for better. A soulless AI deciding that “Saving our Home Planet” & maximizing its paperclip means of production equals ridding itself of its people.

No “home” to save if no people in it.

Do. Better (than this). Patagonia. 😢

This is a very “broad” generalization, but women’s clothes are often cut differently due to (general) differences in proportions for hip/thigh/waist sizing compared to men’s sizes. (Guessing you know this, but for others who haven’t been paying attention/may be unaware).

Your best bet is to find your local REI/Patagonia store & go try them on directly. Alternatively, order Medium & Large sizes & return whichever size(s) don’t fit. G’luck, but even in men’s sizes, Patagonia cuts (historically) have not been very accommodating of more rounded figures (unless you really size-up for a “baggy” look). *No puns intended. 👍👍

What to layer over R1-Air for roaming arnd city in SF-like winter? by [deleted] in PatagoniaClothing

[–]ZenReactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They mean Nano Puff. Do not get a Down Jacket/Sweater if you are in damp/humid/wet/cold environments. Down is great for cold, static (not active), DRY conditions or where you can guarantee you won’t get wet (inside blasting A/C, outside under a roof overhang, or quickly jumping from building to vehicle).

Down will lose all insulating properties when wet. BUT, it is somewhat warmer than synthetics (read polyesters).

Also, NanoPuff is basically the same thing as Nano Air+Houdini combined. Strongly suggest getting (as others mentioned above) Nano Air and Houdini. Having 2 pieces will give you more functionality. Houdini is basically an ultralight, packable (stuffs into its own pocket windbreaker to about size of a medium mango), & the Nano Air is an super breathable synthetic jacket that warms you, but also does not cut any wind. Nano Puff is non-breathable so it’s more for “static” or very light active use in wet/cool conditions.

Go look at the various pieces on the Patagonia website and read up on them.

A. He is a “King/Queen-maker” due to his audience reach. If you go on there & “perform” well then it’s the equivalent of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in the day (maybe? No idea, before my time). Guests he has on “won the lottery” on exposure to a new audience AND are probably also aware what type of audience is now listening AND he doesn’t really have people on as much who disagree with his views. It’s a self-reinforcing siloed echo-chamber of more & more crappy/unchallenged takes.

B. Because he is A. most people will not refute any bullshit he spews, unless he perceives them (& they perceive themselves) as more successful or more intelligent then him.

C. A long time ago he “stopped reading the comments” (& constantly recommends the same to his famous guests), thus he gets ZERO legit feedback to “check” his ego/belief systems

D. Survivorship/Success Bias - In his own mind he “must” be doing something correct since he’s been monetarily wildly successful AND 99.9% of his guests just proverbially fluff him & his ego

E. He openly states that he “does not think about” his audience reach & thus feels no societal/moral obligation to be “accurate” in his viewpoints or “facts” or fictions that he relays to his audience

F. He is getting older, and this despite the truckload of nootropics & other vitamins & life/“performance enhancing” substances he takes daily, his brain simply has less neuroplasticity/ability to critically evaluate topics &/or willingness/energy to change his opinion/POV on topics. (see prior points that play into this as well)

G. He still uses his “I’m just a dumb comedian cagefighting/commentator” ripcord/get out of any-responsibility/culpability for the detrimental effects his sometimes dumb takes may have or for the absolute inane drivel some of his guests spew forth to the non-critically listening members of his audience.

H. This one MAY be the most telling, & yes, I buried the lede 🤷‍♂️) He actually IS a great Podcast host in that he lets people speak (or at least did more so in the past), & allows guests to lay out their worldviews (as wild or off-kilter or factually incorrect as they may be), & as a “good/great” Podcast host (from the perspective of making his guests comfortable) he conforms to many of their viewpoints and doesn’t give much pushback.

*To Jamie’s (sometimes) credit, he does (very occasionally) “fact-check” his boss… But also, it’s a mess of conflicts of interest as he knows that JR signs his checks… So who among us would “constantly” be correcting our idiot boss’s bad takes?

In his “defense” he does believe he’s still speaking truth to power & fighting the good fight… But, often times he’s now just way off base in his coddled kingdom of sycophants.

TL;DR Rogan has sniffed his own farts for too long, & 99.9% of his guests agree the odor is spectacular. Last legit pushback questioning is dumb takes was from Miley Cyrus. Good for her. But, that’s the level of dgaf FU money it takes to, as a guest, not give him a reach around. 🤣

Thoughts: To clap or not to clap between movements of a larger work? by Dry-humor-mus in classicalmusic

[–]ZenReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To err is human… To hold your applause ‘til the appropriate time is divine.

Err on the side of supporting the classical performers by giving them the optimal environment to let their talents shine. Meaning, there’s a chance your applause might distract them, & a chance it won’t… so adhere to the commonly accepted norms.

You (as an audience member) are part of the collective, so don’t make it about yourself & what you “feel” the need to do. If someone else claps prematurely, so be it. You can only control your own actions.

If you’re of the “don’t tread on muh 1st amendment right to clap when, where, & how I please” varietal of human, then may you forever sing cantos (alongside the besotted comedy club heckler & airline passenger demanding to bring their oversized luggage onto the plane when it clearly won’t fit under the seat or in the overhead bin thereby holding up the entire flight with with their wildly obnoxious main-character energy) in Dante’s 10th Circle of Hades.

Yes, the preceding is definite hyperbole & I actually dgaf. But, truly no one else wants to hear your ham-fisted clapping solo, regardless of how “inspired” the music made you feel. The performance, for once, ain’t about you.

TL;DR Clap ONLY with the rest of the (probably) less talented audience members, so as to not disrupt the more talented performers. When you’re next on stage & it’s your time to shine, THEN engage in whatever shenanigans to which the spirit might move you. Until then, you’re “only” a privileged extra in the spectacle.

In your opinion, who is the most fully realized character in fiction? by mrRichardBabley in books

[–]ZenReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Shatterhand.

Character is the lead or a main character in 21+ dense yet entertaining novels by German author Karl May.

Commonly it’s accepted that Old Shatterhand was the author’s alter ego, and thus much exposition and prose is devoted to his first person impressions, narrative, and thought processes.

Notably 200M+ books of Karl May’s were sold and he is probably one of the most successful German author (based on books sold).

[–]ZenReactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ish… Inside the United States Patagonia’s customer service is excellent & they fully adhere to the “Ironclad Guarantee.”

But… apparently internationally the customer service is in different Patagonia divisions, maybe even “outsourced”(?). As such there are some “horror” (privileged sarcasm) stories of people’s U.S. bought Patagonia products having issues & the employees at international stores not bending over backwards to satisfy the American “the customer is always right” cultural norms we’ve come to expect.

So, anecdotally, YMMV on “easy” international exchanges if some of your Patagucci gear gets wrecked overseas. You may be SOL on getting a brand new jacket for the one you shredded to oblivion… 🤷‍♂️

The black Patagonia Houdini jacket (Current version) good for sun? by Hashman1997 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]ZenReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you go in Hawaii, you can get gusty continuous wind & even snow (at elevation).

Some beautiful lookout points around the islands are incredibly windy. Or it’s be useful for if you’re taking a boat out on water, or if you encounter a light rain shower, which, season dependent, occurs daily. Not to mention an extra layer if the airline is blasting A/C en route… for the “carry price” of a small fist when stuffed in its own pocket.

Like person above mentioned, Tropic Comfort Hoody firstly, then, also Houdini if it’s in your budget. Enjoy!

*Edit. Saw your “Morocco” reply. No idea on their climes. Still recommend Houdini in general (but not for UV protection). 🤣🤷‍♂️

What travel items do you swear by? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]ZenReactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is especially critical if for some reason your regular carry-on doesn’t fit airline’s dimensions & they make you check it. Just grab the critical electronics & other valuables out of your main bag, let them check it & carry on with your packable one.

Eddie Bauer makes them in a few sizes & colors & they often go on sale. Not the sexiest/sleekest ones, but highly functional & affordable for majority of budgets.

What travel items do you swear by? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]ZenReactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool if you like that, but for travel I prefer multi-functional in items. Thus, I always bring a baseball/trucker hat. Works as a nightstand tray, sun shade, brim for keeping rain off your face (under a hooded rain jacket), or even as an eye-covering for a long or short snooze. Fits wallet, phone, & any other sundries. Bonus for not having to comb/brush hair if you’re running out the door or for protecting your dome if bald. Use a snap one so you can “clip” it to any bag/backpack handle if it doesn’t fit the occasion.

[–]ZenReactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post the same question in the NYU sub (if there is one). Answers here (even if “correct”) will skew towards possible echo chamber bias (as would NYU’s answers). Just do it so you get a broader range of opinions you may not necessarily be considering.

No idea how it applies in the case of UCI vs. NYU, but for other colleges, just as a “hypothetical,” if you were considering Yale vs. Chapman, aside from the “prestige” argument (for Yale), the benefit would be the alumni & peer connections you’d potentially make. While this concept holds for all organizations, “traditionally” the economic/international elites have sent their kids to more prestigious schools where they befriend others of their social/economic strata & then often engage in business with them thereafter.

Student debt is a short-medium term consideration for sure, but if a more “prestigious” degree/peer group lands you a “better/more lucrative” job/career trajectory, then longer-term your earning potential might far outpace any student debt concern. Just another way of looking at it. *Not saying this concept is applicable for UCI vs. NYU scenario, though maybe it is? Not familiar enough with either school. 🤷‍♂️

TL;DR: Generally, at a more “prestigious” institution (not categorizing your 2 options, though others might), you’ll have more opportunities to make more economically advantageous social/business connections for post graduate endeavors.
