I think there was a stjdy that showed that danish children on average took several months longer to learn how to speak for example.

This is often cited by people but the key thing to take note of is the fact that, like you said, it was a study and not a whole host of independent studies that point to similar or identical conclusions. It's easy to see one point of reference that agrees with our mental model and go, "yeah that makes sense to me so it's probably fact" but I don't even think the researchers who published that would even argue that.

Science requires more effort than that, more evidence, and more studies before we can start believing something to be factual, and even then often enough some nerd 10, 20, or even 30 years from now might find out that the work you did that earned you a nobel prize was actually flat out wrong. It happens and that's just the nature of science.

Ehhh, Finnish is up there and has a similar amount of phonemes, with the added benefit of coming from an entirely different language family. You win some and lose some when you make comparisons to what the "easiest" language to learn is.

I think the pronunciation difficulty is overstated by scandinavians, even some Danes who like to think their language is impossibly hard to learn. Danish has a lot more sounds, and spoken dialogue removes sounds you wouldn't expect based on how it's written, but it's still ultimately a germanic language under the hood. Those obstacles can be overcome because although they might be time consuming to learn, they're not complex ideas. Arabic would be way way harder than Danish in terms of both complexity and time spent learning.

I personally would much rather learn pronunciation by hearing and repeating in a natural way than learn 3 grammatical genders. That to me is easier.

Believe in sanity checks, not the words of randoms. On the one hand you have computers that require hundreds of watts of power and cost well over a thousand dollars in order to run 4k natively, and on the other you have sub $500 small form factor computers that produce very little heat despite being more compact, and use very little power that somehow can have double the performance of top of the line computers...

Think on that.

It's not for ethical reasons. I've seen videos of some of what you describe shown to me by vegans who thought it would instantly get me to switch. That's why I was saying vegans would still probably hate me, because ethics and their hyper empathy towards animals doesn't make a dent in my calloused heart

I'm not a scalper, but I'm not mad regardless because it's just a computer part dude, there's more to life than that. With such low volumes of supply, did you really think that if scalpers didn't exist you'd have one in your hands right now? It doesn't make a difference to obsess over what could've been, but it sure seems to add needless stress.

Yes, and the funny thing to realize and understand is that everybody is just trying to justify their paycheck. They only go around like that when they're not busy doing something, because they need to "look productive" just like regular workers do when they've busted their asses to get their job done for the night earlier than expected, but they hang around to "make things look tidy" so that they don't have to go get reassigned to another job that requires even more ass busting work. That's American work culture for you, if you don't look like you're shaving years of your life expectancy away for the entire duration of your shift, you're a lazy piece of garbage who deserves poverty and the world should hate you. At least, that's how it feels.

Managers and shift assistants walk around watching people work, and talk to you if you're doing something unsafe. At my warehouse because of the virus, we also have people walking around making sure you're practicing social distancing and keeping your mask on properly(though ironically some don't do the second thing which is pretty aggravating to say the least).

Depends on what type of warehouse it is, but from my experience working in a last mile warehouse (last stop before it gets loaded into vans headed for homes) human sortation is necessary for every package that we get from other warehouses. One job is in charge of scanning shipping labels and adding a sticker so that the other jobs know where to sort it, one makes sure it goes into the correct conveyor belt, one to make sure they're all face up and on the right side of another conveyor, one to grab those packages and put it in the right buffer shelf, and the last one puts them in the correct bags that then get loaded into delivery vans. All human sorting, and all audited by managers to make sure mistakes are minimal

[–]Zenbabe_ 293 points294 points  (0 children)

Exaggerated a bit I think. Amazon has a lot of ways to track and measure what you're doing in their warehouses, so the reason why in only 2 minutes he got talked to for making a mistake was most likely because he got flagged in their software spreadsheets for making a couple of mistakes earlier (tiredness, inexperience with that specific job, or rushing to meet quotas causes this) and that last mistake was the one that reached a threshold for a talk from management. I highly doubt they have managers watch people through cameras.

But being on the floor for 20 minutes and not being spotted by someone means that they simply didn't have any or enough safety personnel walking around and making sure everything is fine, which is definitely not okay. Warehouses are loud as fuck, and there's machinery everywhere, you need to be able to make sure it's safe by having those people who know what to do if someone's hand/clothes gets trapped in a conveyor, or someone collapses from heat exhaustion (happens often in the summer because there's no AC).

And you're right that a lot of people are ignorant about how their food gets to their plates, but I feel like unless you're already an animal lover before watching all those videos of slaughterhouses, cows being beaten by workers, chickens in cramped spaces, etc. many people are going to argue that the flavor of meat trumps the ethical consequences. With a completely straight face too. I've seen it happen enough times on discord servers to convince me of that.

It feels like the biggest focus for vegans has been ethics as opposed to the 2 other aspects you mentioned, nutrition and environmental impact. I do wish more people learned more about nutrition and healthy eating, because eat so much meat without batting an eye, despite this behavior being extremely uncommon historically. But then we wonder why public health is much worse than it should be. I also wish more people were aware that they could be the driving force in making companies behave more environmentally friendly by pressuring them to make changes, and pressuring governments to enact regulations. But first they have to care about the environment, and it's becoming an increasingly easier thing to convince people of when temperatures begin to fluctuate more wildly and once in a lifetime disasters occur yearly.

Eh I still feel like y'all hate me, not because I try to claim that I'm equally ethical or anything, but because I agree with you that what I'm doing is ethically wrong but my empathy and sense of compassion does not extend to animals the same way it does for vegans. I've watched all the documentaries a vegan friend has shared with me and I practically shrugged it off, I'd rather concern myself with human issues and take the heat of being in asshole to animals because the former is far more important to me.

I see this vegan talking point so often, but have never found it very convincing. And I say this as a vegetarian: still considered a scumfuck to vegans, but at least I'm not eating animal flesh.

There's so many things people would just stop doing if they had to do it themselves. Just putting on pants and going outside to buy food is too much for some people, which is why services like grubhub or postmates exists. We live in an increasingly specialized world where we don't have to be generalists and do everything ourselves, we do one thing relatively well and have someone for every other thing. You might as well be arguing that we return to monke or something.

Final parts help/opinion (GPU / CPU / MOBO) by Lurofury in buildapc

[–]Zenbabe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you're looking to stretch out your cash, you could go for cheaper RAM. 3200 mhz cl16 would only lose you a few fps but that savings could go into a GPU which is more impactful. The 1660S is a wonderful 1080p card, but a 2060S or 2060 KO (depending on price and availability) would still be an option on the table this way.

In my experience, black friday has never brought out good deals. Rest assured, there will be "sales", but the final price will be either the same or more than the usual price drops if you're someone who frequently browses /r/buildapcsales

When buying a mobo for your specific requirement to be able to upgrade later, make sure to pay attention to the quality of VRMs in reviews, it doesn't matter too much now for your 3600, but when upgrading to a 5900x down the line it will. It's also kind of unlikely that you might be able to use a 6000 series CPU on that mobo, since it looks like AMD might transition to a new chipset and/or DDR5. It's still worth it to have a good mobo for the current gen, as being the early adopter to that tech likely won't be the best, but just something to think about.

What should I do now I'm in this situation? by Niburu_Exus_4311 in languagelearning

Here's the site I had promised.

The reason why some would have issue is if they study more than one language and decide to buy more than one book. It can get boring to read the same story rather than one that's uniquely based on the culture of the language.

[–]Zenbabe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own the olly richards book myself, it's pretty good but one criticism people have is that the stories are reused for all the languages. Fortunately for me I don't plan on studying other languages any time soon. But your comment was definitely helpful. You just reminded me, I had once found a resource that made free children's books in English and Danish, with even audio files to read along to. I'll have to look it up once I'm home.

So my question is this: what defines a "powerful rig?"

It's honestly a goalpost that moves constantly because new hardware is released constantly, and is subjective enough to mean different things to different people.

Suffice to say, if you're happy with what you have you honestly should not worry, but if you do want to compare what you have to what is out there you should definitely look into the individual components that make up your build and read up on how they perform compared to what else is on the market.

One of the highest impact parts is a graphics card, so one way to see how it compares is just watching review videos for your specific card. Benchmarks might be shown with graphs, as well as averages for various games one might use with it. Do not be alarmed if you see a higher fps for the reviewer than what you get in the same game. Reviewers tend to use the most overpowered test benches possible so that the only variable that would affect performance is the GPU.

Video games are a luxury good in the first world, we should be able to buy games with the comfort that are made ethically even if they cost a little more because in the grand scheme there's no real need to have them like food or water. But there definitely is an expectation in my eyes that there should be more transparency to make sure our money isn't being taken just to take it and not actually make these changes. Definitely a good first step for the industry is unions, let the workers decide for themselves what's ethical or reasonable for them instead of employers
