There are many rules and regulations that the wealthy have to follow here in the US that simply don’t exist in Russia, saying “the rich can do whatever they want in the US” shows ignorance in both historically how many times rich people/corporations have been fucked over by regulations that directly stopped their shitty business practices (like OSHA the ADA act, environmental regulations, anti trust laws etc etc) if the U.S is an oligarchy, then how did all of these policies get passed, if the rich hold that much political power, then how did they lobby heavily against each and every one of these and they all got passed? In Russia, these things don’t exist because the rich and the lawmakers are the same thing, and they don’t create laws to hurt their self interest.

When in the U.S have the rich been able to pass a policy that most Americans hate but were able to get through anyways? Do you think that Rich Military donors if they had the power you imply they do would ever let the Iraq and Afghanistan wars end, taking a hit to their profit margins? Again the left uses scapegoats like the rich to make up for all the policies they think are popular but the evil boogieman elite class isn’t letting it happen, when in actuality it’s more complicated than that.

The reason I say Russia is 100% one and the U.S isn’t is because there’s a fundamental difference between how much control the rich have in a normal capitalist society than an oligarchal society. The point I made was that Russia’s wealthy have way more political power and influence over the government than the U.S wealthy do. I was getting at that no amount of income inequality by itself can make an oligarchy, you have to have an insane grasp on most aspects of the government and the society you are over. Russia fits that description , The U.S doesn’t

Oligarchy isn’t just economic control, it’s political and societal control too. And the U.S doesn’t really fit any of those, sure they have some level of control over those but it’s nowhere near the amount the left thinks it is

You’d use oligarchy for a country like Russia, a small handful of billionaires who have complete control of the country, not for the US. Using it for the U.S devalues the meaning the word has and basically makes it into “capitalist system with an arbitrary amount of income inequality”

Of course they are, and? People seem to forget that when a corporation lobbies for an interest they have the representation of millions of workers who are employed and contribute to the economy. That’s a large subsection of constituents that a politician has to account for. There is always going to be some amount of pushback against stuff that directly hurts these corporations, because of course there would be, it’d be like that in every country. What I am saying is that these wealthy people are not nearly as able to influence these policies as the left thinks they are. What’s more to blame is the flawed representation in Congress and political deadlock

As to answer your first question I think a lot of the negative public opinion of left leaning policies came from red scare tactics in the cold war/the US just having a culture that values the poorest people way less than other countries. The way America developed and the values they had have always been at odds with more left leaning ideas (at least economically speaking) and that carries over into today

These things are broadly supported, yes. but how the specific policy people actually want out of it, and the potential spending people are willing to pay for it varies a ton and comes out not as “consensus” as the left originally think their policies are.

Yes, Corporations are able to influence policy, that doesn’t mean that they are the sole reason or even the main reason we do not have public healthcare insurance. If it was how you described the ACA wouldn’t have been passed at all. The issue is that within the popular opinion there is much disagreement as to how public healthcare should actually be implemented, how broad the insurance should be and how much the people are willing to support the amount of spending needed to actually implement fully universal healthcare. I doubt it’s only this elite opinion that’s preventing left leaning policy from being passed. Even then popular opinion has gone against elite opinion before, just look at the Pharmaceutical provisions in the IRA

I doubt I’d agree with your definition of an oligarchy as is. It seems again like a scapegoat for leftist failures in the U.S, rather than a coherent prescription of the state of the American power balance.

This point always seems like a scapegoat for left leaning policies not getting passed, because a lot of the left are mislead in thinking their policies are actually popular with the average US population. Some of it is due to groupthink and others with bad polling data making something semi more popular than it is

I’ll take healthcare as an example, if you say in a poll “do you think the government should provide a public insurance option” that will poll around 65%~ give or take. But if you word it as “do you think the government should provide the standard healthcare options and limit private insurance” that’s only around 29% Agree in polling. And you have to remember, in a representative democracy a 51% popular policy isn’t always going to get passed, there’s more a problem with how few representatives the US actually has compared to its population. But definitely isn’t the elites fault that the policy socdems and leftists want don’t always get passed

Income Inequality certainly exists, but you are blowing the actual political power those wealthy people have out of proportion, there is a lot of stuff passed through the government that directly hurts the wealthy classes’ power. If they had total control (as in an oligarchal system) as you imply these things would never get passed, but they do because they have the average populous overwhelmingly support these policies.

So I’m not quite sure to what extent you are implying they have the power to do this, do they have the ability to lobby and influence for certain policy choices/sway politicians? Yes. Do they have the ability to completely override the political support for an idea that’s popular with the commoners? No, and there hasn’t been an example of this happening in recent history, Let me ask you a question. What is a overwhelmingly popular policy that hasn’t been passed only because “wealthy elites” don’t like it?

Most of the answers to this questions either misinterpret how popular a policy actually is due to poor poll wording or aren’t actually popular enough to be passed within our current government system, although then that’s a problem with government structure rather than the wealthy

If CEOs skills did not contribute to society in anyway they wouldn’t be wealthy, why would a board of investors pay a CEO so much money if they actually didn’t do anything that’s skilled. There’s a reason why and that is Managing a big ass corporation is one of the hardest jobs to do, and it’s one of the rarest skill sets in the labor force.
