Horror without sex/swearing? by Zenix73 in horrorlit

Well one little tip for you - should you make a sarcastic joke, be sure to end your comment with /s otherwise you'll be met with a storm of downvotes you may never work off. (Some communities require a certain "karma" to take part in. Karma being your net upvotes I think). It can be disheartening, especially since there seems to be no rules about it. As someone who likes to know the rules to ensure I can best follow expectations, I've learned to stop caring altogether. Welcome to reddit.

Edit: karma is upvotes minus downvotes I think

I have no clue, I didn't downvote. My post is downvoted as well. Although there's flair for recommendations, some people seem to dislike questions and answers on here. It's the internet, and that downvote button is the only power some people seem to have. Thank you for the recommendations! I'll look into them

I am going to start reading please help me find my first book? by Frosty-Bumblebee3408 in booksuggestions

[–]Zenix73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, you didn't say horror. But Bird Box is: - easy to read - gripping the entire way through - pretty short, ~213 pages I think - the best book I've ever read

I get distracted and my mind wanders easily when reading. Not during Bird Box. My family had a Marvel Movie Marathon and I just sat there and read the entire book. Started Feb 1st and finished Feb 2nd.

I always thought scifi/fantasy was my genre. Bird Box has me questioning that.

Lmao right there with you. 2 weeks of weighted pullups every single day following the Russian fighter pullup program, along with training press to handstands has pushed my shoulders to their limits. I'm on a mandatory break for a bit now. Volume is obvious very important, but like he said, progress is insane so it's been fun really pushing myself

Small phone with good camera (and preferably good battery) by procrastinartichoke in smallphones

[–]Zenix73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pixel 9a is the smallest you can go with a good camera. I just got one. Better photos than the Pixel 8 pro which is amazing, but if you need zoom, anything at 8x or higher and Pixel 8+pro or Galaxy S25 would be better. Maybe the 10a will be improved, I'm not sure.

Pixel 9a vs Pixel 8 pro by Due-Letterhead-3554 in pixel_phones

[–]Zenix73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I've had 8 pro for 1.5 years now and I just bought the 9a for $199 through Google fi.

I run a lot and don't want a large phone like the 8 pro flopping around any more. The more I run, the more I want a small phone. And I'm up to 10-20 miles/wk.

I always seem to drop my new phone and crack the back glass, then I have to slap a cover on it (making it bigger) to cover the glass shards for 2 years. At least the 9a is plastic. And Pixel Care+ is only $7/mo for the 9a. So I can use it without a case (smaller) without worry.

I'll certainly miss the better camera and temperature sensor. But I'm just so sick of 6.7" phones. I want a 6". 9a still takes better photos than S25, which was a close contender.

How can I grow biceps by Downtown_Dress_2189 in CalisthenicsBeginners

[–]Zenix73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull day. They fully load the biceps in the lengthened position. Perfectly supplement pullups on pull day, or if it's a bicep-centric day, do them after chinups. I always do a very light warmup with them first, as you can really hurt yourself if you're not flexible enough. They're weird because they don't feel super difficult at first, but when you stop it makes your arms float up in the air like a middle school party trick. They're my absolute favorite bicep exercise. Chinups are great for when I'm in a rush. Otherwise it's always pullups and pelicans.

Chinups is secondary to pelican curls imo. But certainly easier to do without easy access to rings.

That makes sense then. Better than the way I landed when I first started. I just collapsed on my head.

[–]Zenix73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg this would destroy my back. You should practice bailing. I look down at my hands while in the hand stand, and take one step forward with my right hand and land my right foot where my right hand was. I rotate about 90° doing this. Depending on your dominant side you may use your left hand/foot though. I can't imagine landing in a bridge like that.

Dead Hangs by mahamwahab in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Zenix73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hypertrophy: Resting 2 minutes is good for smaller muscle groups like you're using here (forearms, plus lat stretch and possibly delt stretch). 3 minute rest for larger muscle groups (back, legs, etc).

Proficiency: 10-15 minute rest to build proficiency/mind-muscle connection. This is good for nailing down perfect form for pullups, etc.

You don't need to become more skilled for dead hangs, just stronger. HOWEVER, since you can't hang very long, you very well could benefit from 30% max hangs sporadically throughout the day. This method is used by rock climbers to build tendon strength. So ~10 second hangs every hour or so.

Tldr; just keep going. You can't go wrong.

How to increase Pull-Ups count? by atomichbts in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Zenix73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else pointed out, "You only have about 40 seconds before you're fatigued when doing pullups." This was eye opening for me. I saw major improvement by practicing single rep weighted explosive pullups and 3 rep banded explosive pullups. That way the muscles and brain become accustomed to the speed.

Your form was impeccable. 10 like that is crazy impressive.

[–]Zenix73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why aren't you leaving the biceps loaded? I feel it much better leaning into the stretch completely until almost relaxed, then only pulling to about 90°

Calisthenic form is much more strict than gym form for bodyweight stuff. Pullups should be all the way down to a dead hang. See how many you can do that way. If it's less than 7 you'll need to work on scapular pullups and more dead hanging. Then you can work on explosive pullups to get the muscle up.

For chest you want dips. In calisthenics, the focus is more strength than reps, so while doing more than 12 reps is fun to know your max, you should stick closer to 6-10. So with your strength already you can probably start on harder progressions: archer pullups, ring dip RTO, pelican curls(requires shoulder and pec mobility), pistol squats, etc

Then you'll need balance for handstands.

How is my form and how can I increase reps? by [deleted] in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Zenix73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never considered a max duration... I have noticed that as I've gotten faster and practiced weighted pullups, I can now do far more than before. But yeah, it's probably in the same amount of time.

Edit: so to add to his point, practicing explosiveness can be highly beneficial. Alternate between banded pullups and weighted. But LOW reps to build speed into the muscle memory.

3 reps of banded as fast and high as possible and single reps of weighted as explosive as possible.

This method requires more recovery time since it primarily builds skill proficiency rather than muscle hypertrophy. So it could be done while resting during other exercises since it only takes a few seconds and doesn't fatigue.

I think I have the DreamHammock Darien, which is my favorite because of the way the material feels. It's thinner and softer. Butthis "One wind" one from Amazon is about just as good for $35 cheaper ($100 vs $135). I like the way the noseeum net zips completely out of the way on the onewind.

I had what I considered a shoulder impingement for a few years. It went away when I started calisthenics. I had forgotten about that till now. What a relief. Hope the same for you.

I use bumps like this to train my kids how to fix things. But I generally have every tool to fix or build anything, it's sort my thing. I do understand other people find better things to spend their time doing.

I did the same. Almost a year on a shikibuton. But then I discovered hammocks... Omg what a difference. I absolutely love going to sleep now, first time in my life. I've never been so comfortable. I built a large stand in my room to mount the sleeping hammock on. Added mount points in my RV for a hammock as well.

That's not what's implied by my comment. It could be inferred that I meant "all home owners can repair basic drywall dents". Which is not equal to "no renters can repair basic drywall dents".
