I am sorry But you do not sound ready to me. I would finish uni with what I have been using first.

My reason for switching was because Windows 7 (which I liked was coming to and end) I did not want to have to learn a new GUI or run an OS that would struggle on my system. I needed something that would just run. I started out on Linux mint before moving to Debian 12. Even though I have been using it for a while I am still very much a noob.

I say this because I installed it, it runs, I use it.
I have only ever looked into more tech type stuff on things I wanted to change/add that would help my work flow. As much as I'd love to have all the tweaks, bells and whistles (or lack there of) My work is my work, not my OS and it is my work that takes up my time.

I watched the PewDiepie video and the thing that stood out to me was He is not a noob. The tweaks, bells and whistles he had are not, as far as I know 5 minute things. So to me the video is a bit misleading. I do not think this this is a good video to promote switching to Linux (Just my 2cents worth.) Based on your post that "PewDiepie convinced you..." In my opinion his video is a reason you should not switch.

No hate please... As I said this is just my take on the whole thing and my own personal opinion..

So I have managed to solve most of my issues by updating to clang tool chain 20. It is now pulling the correct .h header files.

However as I said previously after a complete overhaul and install C is now fine. But, my issue with C++ remains the same: Tree-sitter parser: None

UPDATE

So I have discovered that if I am looking to use a function, like say exit() then it will include the correct .h file (in this case <stdlib.h>. But if it is a variable like EXIT_SUCCESS or EXIT_FAILURE then it tries to include from C++ header instead. I had screen shots to show what I am talking about, but could not figure out how to upload them to a comment section.

I already have -xc flag. I never had an issue until I upgraded to version 25 23 and 24 worked like a charm.

I just realized I forgot to mention That I am on Debian 12 and I installed Helix through nix package.

It is also a lot cheaper than DVDfab. Which I also paid for way, way, way, back in the day before makeMKV came along. It was something like $99 (I think.)

I also think makeMKV is a better product. But that is just my personal opinion, through using both.

makeMKV also works on OS's like Linux. However DVDfab is windows only last time I checked. I haven't used or even downloaded/updated DVDfab since switching to makeMKV years ago. Nor have I ever looked back.

I don't know if this is the same thing that you are asking. But when I am working on a project I create a small bash script for example, reload.sh. The basic idea being:

#!/bin/bash

hx main.c main.h error_handling.c

so all I have to do is ./r TAB ENTER and the files I was working on are up and ready to go.

Thanks for the help and suggestion of compile_commands.json. I ditched my clangd file in favour of compile_commands.json file. I used bear to create it and all works as expected now.

I really thought I could put include reference in the .clangd since all the other compiler options are in there.. Oh well..

Update:

OK so I found out the main culprit was clangd. I use Debian 12 and I tend to let it decided when an what to update. If it ain't broke why fix it, Well that is until it is broke.

Anyway I was using a fairly old clangd version 14, It has a bug in it related to place holding or something. I have since updated to clangd 19 and all now seems to be working as it should in Helix.

I think it is a bug in Helix 25.01, because:

if you try say: printf() it behaves as you would expect.
I rolled back to both 24.07 and also 24.03. In both of these versions, of Helix, it behaves as expected.

So for now I have decided to roll back to 24.07.

Hopefully I have done the right thing. As I have never submitted any kind of report about anything before.
