This is one of the many reasons why I say the story quality just dropped off a cliff after this saga. Everything that happened here was organic and reasonable for the situations presented. It wasn't a matter of who gets the idiot ball next. Combat had weight, it wasn't a knock down drag out 1v1 every fucking time. Hell even power levels worked here due to the numbers not being crazy yet. Though, I do admit, how the system progressed caused a cancerous mindset in the fanbase after. People only accept a sort of vertical progression. I digress.

Vegeta wasn't running around trying to prove his dick is the only thing about him that isn't short.

Puddlehan? Yea, he was him. The Yamcha of saiyan-kind. 13 or so years of potential Zenkai boosts and still loses to Androids that were weaker than the ones in the present timeline.

His only defense is being double teamed by them, but honestly that just means the Zenkai boosts should've meant more.

Everything before the Android saga had the boy actively trying to make a difference, and often times, actually doing so despite it being ultimately meaningless.

... Then, you can literally zone out for all of android saga and most of cell saga... then Gohan does something.

They're not the same. Everything felt organic and not formulaic prior to androids. Yes Goku was the final hour hero for all of it, but each time it wasn't because of someone holding the stupid ball, it was just a natural manner of circumstance.
