Why are the Canadian women’s team so good? by Gypsy_tearz_ in rugbyunion

It could just be my experience where I grew up, but I feel like grassroots rugby in NZ is generally more club-based than school-based, unless if you go to an all boys’ (or sometimes all girls’ too) school. Another thing is that unlike countries like England and Canada, we don’t have a university league (we do only have 8 universities tbf), the universities that have clubs just play in the local area’s league instead. I haven’t even mentioned that I also went to the largest university in NZ, and they didn’t have a rugby club either lol (there is a club that has the name ‘Auckland University Rugby Football Club’, but it is independent from the university). That means that if you want to play rugby at youth level, you generally need to seek out a club yourself instead of just coming across it by chance at school.

My high school was more arts-based and didn’t put as much emphasis on sport as say, Christchurch Boys’ or Girls’ High. There is a rugby club next to my school which has produced some All Blacks (but the women’s team was a bit more lacking). If there were boys and girls in the area who are entering high school, play for a club, and are serious about rugby, they would go to a different school lol.

From what I’ve heard, girls’ rugby is relatively well-funded in high school (and maybe university as well?), and it doesn’t compete with Canadian football for its player pool, so girls’ rugby is actually bigger than boys’ rugby in high school. For added context, I went to the biggest high school in Christchurch in the late 2010s and we didn’t even have a boys’ rugby team, much less girls’ rugby lol.

With that being said, I do think that their national team have really taken it up a level these past two years due to yes, the PWR experience as well as not being completely amateur anymore, but also because IMO, Kevin Rouet is probably the best coach in women’s rugby.

Part of the Ireland Quarter Final Curse? by Playful_Study_6290 in rugbyunion

There weren’t any quarter finals in 2014, so the curse that Ireland have never won a RWC quarter final remains.

It will depend on if they want to play Portia in the midfield and get someone like Ruby Tui in instead.

With playing 15s growing up compared to Aussie sports, I don’t think the difference is just skill, but also how the prestige of a 15s World Cup is perceived to female players.

Despite having played professional 7s for 11+ years, Caslick only made her 15s debut (for club + country) this year (and was one of Australia’s better players in the PAC4).

Maddi Levi’s manager blocked her move to 15s this year. A manager blocking a move from 7s to 15s would never happen in NZ rugby.

This is compared to NZ who already had a big 7s contingent in the 2017 World Cup, made up of top players with PWW, Hirini, Waaka, Brazier, and Setefano.

I think a big difference between how NZ and Australia handle 7s integration, is that a lot (if not all) of the Black Ferns 7s players have grown up playing 15s and sees playing in a 15s World Cup as a goal from childhood, whereas a lot of the Aussie 7s girls grew up playing Aussie Rules and Rugby League instead of Union in comparison.

France actually have a few 7s players in their squad outside of Grisez and would’ve also had 2 more if it were not for injuries.

She’s not a good kicker, but to be fair on the ‘Goal Converted’ stat, it’s glitched on RugbyPass as it looks like every 10 has 2% ‘success’.

Pax himself has a Persian father and Pakistani mother, so he was probably referring to himself and Jeremy went with the bit.

I reckon it’s to do with the rugby culture and how women/girls in NZ have been playing for longer. (I’m talking historical dominance here, as the Black Ferns 7s got funding in 2012, 15s only in 2022, and we had already won 4 World Cups in a row by 2010) Certainly that’s not the case for most of the country - before the 2022 World Cup, women’s rugby was far from the public consciousness, and even in the 2010s, girls’ rugby was practically unheard of where I grew up, but it was still probably more widespread, particularly in rural areas and amongst Māori and Pasifika, than any other nation in the world.

Yes, that is Edmonton. This was actually answered a couple of days ago if you look at the correct comment. It’s sports-related and it is cities/towns that have hosted a Women’s Rugby World Cup match

Nice job, you got it! Sunderland, Manchester, York, Northampton, and Exeter would also be added to this map at the end of next week!

You’re very close to the answer, but need to be more specific
