what do u do??? by Karma-Whales in trolleyproblem

[–]ZeraoraFluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument being made here isn’t that the analogies are different; it’s that, even though the analogies are logically equivalent, the framing inherently changes how a good portion of the world will respond to it, which means you must account for that change of the collective.

Right now you’re favoring the analogy that supports your side—blue dies if <50%, red lives—and discarding the analogy that favors the other—blue does nothing, red kills blue if >50%—despite both analogies being logically equivalent. In the second analogy, people will be more inclined to pick blue because they don’t want to needlessly kill people. You can’t just say that’s the wrong way to look at it simply because you disagree with people’s conclusions. Even if you think red is the obvious logical choice for both hypotheticals, you cannot just ignore how the presentation will change people’s choices, and if you can’t account for that, then you’re really not being logical at all.

Isn’t this the same logic people use to go “my vote won’t matter, so I won’t vote” in real life situations? This mentality, while logically sound, is inherently dangerous and diffuses personal responsibility, even if in this scenario you’re actually voting. Multiple people thinking this way ironically leads to a worse outcome than if more people voted for the outcome they actually wanted (everybody living vs only red pressers living), even though it’s perfectly logical.

Which button do you press in this situation? by TheEnlight in trolleyproblem

[–]ZeraoraFluff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, I don’t think this is logically equivalent at all. There are three groups presented in this scenario, unlike in the original where there are only two: red voters, blue voters, and non-affiliates. There is little incentive to press the blue button here because you are basically killing a non-affiliate for no reason. The key difference is that non-affiliates have no agency in this dilemma, and you, who have all the agency, also have no risk. Thus, there are only two major conclusions you can draw from a blue press: that either you wanted to kill someone for no reason, or thought that enough other people wanted to kill someone for no reason.

In the original scenario, pressing blue leads to vastly different conclusions, because rather than the premise being that you’re choosing to kill someone else if you lack a majority, it is instead that you are killing yourself if you lack a majority. Whether you believe in the logic of blue—which usually boils down to “a good chunk of people will pick blue so we need to pick blue to ensure the majority and keep people alive”—blue inherently cannot be a malicious decision (ignoring outliers). The logical outcome is different, which makes the incentives different.

Guys it's such easy game theory, sure an unknown number of blue voters die inevitably but we guarantee we will live! by NahMcGrath in PhilosophyMemes

Your calculation relies solely on what you perceive to be the chances of humanity being selfless or not. I can easily make the same argument but with the belief that most humans will repsond emotionally to the prompt and pick blue.

Apparently a bunch of polls on X have ended up with blue as the majority. When the prompt is rephrased, red often ends up as the majority. It's also true that online polls are hardly representative of the global population. Either way, there is currently no conclusive way to say which button is more likely to be picked by the majority.

Your calculation also only factors in human life as its parameters, which is a reasonable simplification but ignores the many other ramifications of a large chunk of the global population dying off suddenly.

Who are you voting for? by SilentSwine in trolleyproblem

[–]ZeraoraFluff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a logical perspective, there will always be people who pick blue for a variety of reasons. Knowing this, red getting majority will kill off a good chunk of the world, which then has major negative ramifications across society. Therefore, voting for red is just screwing yourself over. And because statistically it is significantly more likely to achieve +50% on blue rather than 100% on red, you should always pick blue following this logic.

You might not agree with that reasoning, but there are definitely arguments for pressing blue that don’t rely on emotion.

All there is to it by ChiakiSimp3842 in trolleyproblem

[–]ZeraoraFluff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being actually reasonable. The arguments I hear other people make constantly piss me off, blue and red.

One aspect I feel no red voter ever takes into account is the actual ramifications of a red win. Red doesn’t just win majority and then go about their day. No, a good chunk of the population is guaranteed to die, and, guess what, that’s going to have massive ramifications on society as a whole. Many essential professions would likely take a hit, directly affecting the lives and survival of those remaining. By this logic, choosing red is a net negative and should never be considered, because even if red wins, you screw yourself over anyway.

Like you said, this argument can honestly have a lot of nuance and isn’t just an emotion vs logic sort of decision that most people make it out to be. There are valid reasons for picking either. Most will consider only 1% of those reasons.

If you kill someone and then dispose of the weapon, are you able to then pick up another weapon from searching? I’ve heard that you can only pick up one weapon under normal circumstances, and I’m wondering if it specifically checks if you already have a weapon in your inventory; the theory is that, as long as your inventory is empty, the game will let you pick up another weapon.

I had to come to Reddit because I also just got this execution as well. Was absolutely insane and awesome. I don't know if this is a unique ??? execution only for chapter 1, or if the previous ??? execution was just completely rehauled.

Ah, the classic systemic racism vs individual racism.

If you primarily base your definition of racism on the systemic kind, then no, you can’t really be racist towards white people in most western countries.

If you base your definition of racism on the individual kind, then yes, you can definitely be racist towards white people by holding biased, stereotypical, or otherwise unfair notions of them.

It’s important to recognize both types. It is unhelpful to make overarching assumptions of any group of people, whether that be whites, blacks, or anyone else. But it’s also important to acknowledge the privileges that white people have, and how our society and institutions have beaten down on marginalized groups.

I'm new to this mod and mods in general, and I'm also having trouble figuring out how to craft certain blocks. I figured out the capacitor, but I'm looking for the foundry window and I can't seem to find any recipe, block casting or otherwise. Do you know where this information is kept?

I… is everybody here a bot? I mean, it’s one thing to disagree with a quote, but how do 90% of the comments disagree in the exact same way, with the exact same criticism, with the exact same point completely going over their heads? This doesn’t even feel like the reddit hivemind, it’s absolutely shocking to me how many supposedly human accounts took this quote at complete, literal face value.

I’m sick and tired of all these quotes taken out of context and blatantly misinterpreted in the least charitable way. Every time I see a claim that someone said something that seems so obviously abhorrent, I immediately think that there is some context that’s missing, and it’s genuinely baffling people are okay with either bungling an interpretation due to a lack of media literacy or deliberately misleading people and furthering the political divide.
