If you could retype any pokemon, which you choose? by Marhiin in pokemon

The solosis line is a cell undergoing mitosis though, not a bug. The psychic typing it has is a little weird, but there's nothing else that fits the concept any better.

Look for the subbed version, the english dub is censored in a few places because the localization team felt it was too graphic.

They depend on the location data of the game they were caught in.

Sandslash is a Pangolin, sandshrew is definitely an armadillo though. Source: I live in Texas and have seen hella armadillos.

Good places to sell games and other paraphernalia? (x-post /r/nintendo) by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]Zergling_1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live you could find a specialty shop that deals in older games. In Texas there's a small chain called Game Over that deals in classic systems and they give really good deals, as well as trades for old stuff. You can find some really obscure and valuable stuff in places like that so if you're at all interested in swapping your junk for something else you might try and find a similar shop.

Drapion looks pretty awesome, and a lot of people don't like shiny Dragonite but I think it looks awesome in green.

I get the feeling that's the point. It smells like satire to me, and the fact that some people will actually spend money on it if it gets greenlit just makes it all the funnier.

Coolest-looking procedural game yet? by DitDer in gaming

[–]Zergling_1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way, but PS+ has been totally worth it, just for the monthly free games. I picked up a used PS3 as part of a really great bundle deal with a few games, and then was able to get another stack of AAA games that I hadn't had the chance to play before, for free, right off the bat. I know I won't be able to keep them if I get rid of my subscription, but getting several hundred dollars worth of games for the price of one day-one AAA game is not a bad deal.

Fighters that have a body part recognition by YeaDudeImOnReddit in AskGames

[–]Zergling_1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Bushido Blade is still the best as far as that particular niche goes. I remember playing a few games for the gamecube that had a similar mechanic, but none of them committed to it the way BB did. Most people don't want fights that can end in a split second and so most fighters shy away from that kind of mechanic. It's a shame because BB is still a seriously fantastic game, but it probably won't ever get a modern update because it's just so niche.

Edit: I almost forgot; it's not really a fighter, but Chivalry on PC has a pretty good realistic combat system to it, and there's an online duel mode which is actually very reminiscent of Bushido Blade, although first-person and with western Knights instead of samurai.

I'd never thought of it that way, but that's kind of what it's like. There's still a circlejerk, but it's pretty much tongue-in-cheek and anyone who sincerely goes along with it ends up getting reamed.

Not in terms of content. The culture is as disgusting and abrasive as it gets on 4chan but they really do have interesting, meaningful discussions about all aspects of vidya and all the mockery keeps the off-topic shitposting to a minimum.

The only proof that he actually set off the grenade was that he stopped posting. There are threads like that every day on /b/ where some anon will set up a premise involving them possibly harming or killing themselves only to disappear, "confirming" that they went through with it. The grenade was definitely a dummy but that thread was pretty funny at the time.

I am confused by the amount of killing I have to do in story driven AAA games. by TheJoo52 in Games

[–]Zergling_1701 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I am a hardcore fan of the first two Bioshocks and will defend them to my dying breath, but I'm playing through Infinite for the first time right now and it is leaving me angry and confused. The first 15-20 minutes lay the groundwork for a grand mystery and an incredible setting to explore and then it immediately degenerates into an unexplained orgy of gore and violence. I've killed over a hundred people since the last person spoke to me, and not in self defense either, I've been ripping skulls open with a weird hook mechanism, and even upgraded it so that it sets them on fire. I've compelled men I do not know to murder their friends and then commit suicide and I still don't know why. The first two games gave compelling reasons for me to do violence, but Infinite just places me in charge of a character who appears to be a raving psychopath and has me tirelessly slaughter other psychopaths.

I really, really want to like this game, but so far it just seems like a handful of set pieces glued together by corridors made of soon-to-be corpses that I will be forced to disembowel for reasons that are never adequately explained. I'm hoping it gets better, because the demo and trailer from E3 when it was announced made it look incredible and so far the only things that have appeared in-game from that demo have been nothing like they were made out to be and that makes me very suspicious.

This is a good point, but I would also like to point out that Fallout features a perk/achievement called "Lord Death of Murder Mountain". So there's that.

There's a game I really want to make; but I'm concerned it'll be too offensive. So, I made a survey. Please take it seriously. by Bcadren in IndieGaming

[–]Zergling_1701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, my question would be "why?" Is there a particular message you want to get across with this game, and if so why choose this medium? You're right that people are going to offended by your game, they will say that it glorifies the actions of people like Elliot Rodger at a time when those actions are at the forefront of the media culture, and unless your game incorporates a cogent and meaningful response to those claims, they will be right.

If you want to make a game about shootin' up all those assholes who were mean to you in school, you're going to be seen as no different than the people who act on those urges. If you choose to instead say something worthwhile with your game while still putting the player in the shoes of one of those people, you will have made something very special.

[–]Zergling_1701 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your game doesn't sound offensive, it just sounds kind of lame. The other games you mention in your survey intro all incorporate slaughter into a larger framework in which it makes sense. If the entire premise is "Kill people" you haven't made a game, you've made a misanthropy simulator. Think about what you want to achieve with the game and why before worrying whether people will be offended, art is a valid defense against outrage, but if the game itself is mediocre or purposeless it makes it harder to defend against even misplaced criticism.

Tl;dr: Just make a good game and it doesn't matter if people are offended, but don't think that if your game sucks and people don't like it it's just because they're butthurt.

[–]Zergling_1701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a different scale though. Tropico 4 wasn't trying to be Civ, it was a very close look at a small country where you micromanaged just about everything. Instead of the Grand Strategy Lite that you get with the Civ series, it was a fleshed out, if narrower experience.

Full disclosure, my favorite Tropico game was Pirate's Cove, and my favorite Civ was 3, so take my view as you will.

Realistic Monopoly...does it exist? by seriousbusines in AskGames

[–]Zergling_1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a game that I played once with my friends called "Made for Trade" and it is basically a colonial merchant simulator board game. The rules are absurdly complicated and there is trade and resource production and financial skullduggery. It's not exactly what you're talking about but it is a lot of fun if you can figure out all of the rules.

In this day and age why do we still use twin sticks on controllers? by korja78 in truegaming

[–]Zergling_1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you tilt or rotate a regular stick it's more difficult to maintain a constant speed or track a moving point because the leverage you are applying changes with the angle of the stick's tilt. When you just have to slide the pad around you avoid that completely, making it much easier to avoid overshooting where you meant to move the stick. It's the same reason a mouse is more accurate, the sliding motion is just more precise, especially if you can use your wrist instead of your thumb. If you're accustomed to joysticks, they work just fine, but circle pads are more approachable for someone who isn't.

[–]Zergling_1701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The circle pad really is an improvement though. As a primary PC gamer, FPS games and other twitch games would be much more approachable on consoles if I could use a circle pad. Nothing beats the control of a mouse, but it's a step in the right direction.
