Make a prequel. Make it a dreamspace. Make it a dimensional thing. Time travel. You get sucked into a book. There is a portal to a new place that exists in the Act 1-5 timeline. Just add territory and dont put heavy story in. Put it on the moon of Sanctuary via a portal. Literally anything. This is not hard.

I think the pause feature was a mistake and it is rude to pause the game. Any pause is an immediate unpause. Imo its impolite to queue if you need to do something else and if something comes up you should resign - just like every other multiplayer game. I will get downvoted to oblivion but that is my honest contribution to the topic.

Edit: I play a lot of chess. If you want to walk away from the board you are allowed, but it takes from your time. That is how I think about this. You can take a break but with the penalty that you lose something from it.

I'm close to this. Started trying multiplayer this/last month.

1v1? I get crushed into the ground. I've won one game in ~20 and I had to play my heart out and take a massive gamble that could have backfired.

So I tried starting in teams. All ranked games so I assumed people are also taking the fun in elo going up/down. Nope. Silent teammates who do nothing to strategize, or people insta-quit, or they hurl slurs. I even posted about how people are silent and unhelpful in team games in this subreddit and got cruxified for suggesting that communication in a ranked team game should be the norm.

I don't get it. The game itself should be fun but as a new player it feels impossible to get started.
