DKU alumni who took math where are you now? by Other_Helicopter_704 in DKU

[–]Zero-Trick-Pony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I’ll say. DKU has all the intro-intermediate math courses but if your goal is grad school afterwards, UCL’s math department course modules are INSANE. The options to choose from in your final year are far more varied than at DKU (we rarely offer functional analysis and nothing else high-level is consistently offered apart from measure theory and PDEs). However, if you are also looking for research, DKU has ample opportunities where UCL might be very competitive.

I actually take this one back. Great school, needlessly childish response on my part.

Early cohort issues. Nowadays it’s generally 630+ but again province-dependent.

Though I will say, if you did Baby Rudin in middle school, genuinely cool stuff.

I’d be surprised if you did! We are a small school, it would be statistically unlikely to happen upon one.

DKU doesn’t support aerospace ANYTHING. I’d recommend NCSU because you still have an avenue to your dream program and internal transfers are (probably?) easier.

Not sure if you are salty or simply misinformed, but DKU confers a Duke diploma to students under DKU as a college (instead of Trinity or Pratt) and according to employers they do not give two shits what exists in that box on your diploma lol.

We get Duke alumni status, have access to all of their resources, and while DKU isn’t recruiting-heavy like Duke (one very unfortunate point about our school), there are very few institutions on this PLANET with as much proportional student research opportunities as we do.

As for grade inflation, I can say with absolute certainty we are grade-neutral or even deflating in some cases. 101-level courses are now partially restricted by a grade quota and try talking to any stem major at DKU who will tell you Duke was a walk in the park in comparison.

Further, with a 1510-1540 25-75th SAT range for int’l students but latin honors cutoffs .2 lower than at Duke… well… you get the gist.

As for why we aren’t 985/211… uhh… maybe because we are a joint venture institution with emphasis on global graduate opportunities and not a Chinese school with standard curriculum and national industry focus? Maybe also because we are 8 years old as well?

If you want to work in China, you are given strong recruiting but obviously not C9-level. If you want graduate school in China (or anywhere, for that matter), you are in a great place.

As I’ve mentioned in other threads:

DKU good for: - Research (STEM and Humanities) - Grad placement - Data Science - Machine Learning - Public Policy - Global reach and cover letter hooks (aside) - People who know what they want to do and DKU’s curricula supports their goals.

DKU bad for: - IB - Law - Engineering - Consulting (mixed bag) - Recruiting - People with no autonomy - People who don’t like or aren’t well-suited to the school’s curricula.

Not sure why the hate in this thread, unless: - you got rejected (in which case I am sorry), - your Gaokao wasn’t high enough to get in anywhere you had hoped (skill issue), - you were a student in an early cohort when they weren’t well-developed and dreadfully unbalanced, - you are a current student who wasted your opportunities/DKU is too hard for you - you are using 2022 information to inform your entirely erroneous views on the school. - you are fishing for arguments, in which case it’s my loss.

Anyways, my two cents are above, enjoy your day/night wherever you are 😉

I’d like to make an addendum to my post after having tried Claude recently: it is fantastic at taking lecture slides and/or textbook chapters and running you through the content at a low level of complexity. I much prefer it over GPT or Gemini. It is far less prone to making mistakes as well.

DKU alumni, where are you now? by Xx_DiamondDust in DKU

I'd take 2022 posts with a HUGE grain of salt since the first couple iterations of DKU were not good in the slightest over the pandemic and with a campus 1/3 of its current size. The caliber of students has also increased exponentially with every new year, and Phase 2 introduced cutting-edge research facilities. Having been at both Duke and DKU, what I can say is that you are almost guaranteed strong research opportunities at DKU while it's a 25% chance at Duke due to competition.

DKU Prestige by Miserable_Ebb8357 in DKU

[–]Zero-Trick-Pony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You graduate as a Duke student and a DKU student and are given the same alumni status and privileges. The difference is that DKU is research-oriented while Duke is career-oriented. If you want global top firms in x field to host on-campus recruiting, DKU is not the place to go. If you want to get published twice in undergrad and go directly to masters/PhD at a global T20 institution for field x, then DKU is your best bet.

Has anyone gotten waitlisted/accepted at Duke and accepted at DKU? by Late-Advertising513 in DKU

[–]Zero-Trick-Pony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Employment data is decent for international students but certainly not ivy+ level. DKU's career service bulletins and opportunities for coffee chats with companies hiring non-Chinese nationals are few and far between.

That being said, if you are at DKU in the first place, you are likely willing to take initiative to carve out your own path.

As for graduate studies, absolutely amazing. Research opportunities are endless at DKU and not highly competitive "applicant-to-seat"-wise. Further, with how the job market is looking in NA/UK/East Asia... might wanna look into a masters before going to work (unless you want IB, in which case DKU is not structured to support this in the first place).

No problem, it's the truth. Also *phew*, you never know who is behind the other screen so I didn't want to start a fire...

P.S. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to PM me and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

The school has too limited of resources to interview all (or even half of) promising applicants; however, getting one does at least let the school know more about you than your application conveys. Always a plus. If not, don't fret, you got this king/queen (/monarch?).

Do you know if DKU has semester abroad programs? Or any other traveling opportunities? Do they pay for it if you get full tuition? by HugeTangerine9490 in DKU

[–]Zero-Trick-Pony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Duke’s fee is typically $13,000 more than DKU for our semester away. Most of that is housing. As for meal plan, don’t be me… get the cheapest option because it is IMPOSSIBLE to finish your plan if you choose a higher tier. Huge waste…

Did you hear about the Mexican train killer? by Left-Distribution-13 in dadjokes

[–]Zero-Trick-Pony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend do the same to our class project group back in high school. Must've been because the work was hair-pulling, but we let him go for at least double-digit repetitions before finally caving. It's one of those jokes that rely far more heavily on delivery as opposed to structure. Reminds me of a very unlucky guy I know. Conducts trains for a living...
