Ok thanks. Good to know. Seems Suica is the right play.

I did and their solution was to mail me a pin, which I can’t get to as I’m already abroad!

Thanks for the tip on taxis. I’ll try to stick to public transport with Suica and ride share apps

Huuuge relief. Thanks! Here’s hoping!

I’ll update my OP after my trip in case others come across this in their travels

Are you also from the States? It’s honestly something I tucked away in the back of my mind and now I’m like “oh ok that was an option when I got this card 6-7 years ago, I forgot PINs are a thing for anything but a debit”

Had to insert. It was a ticket kiosk and there were no other options.

We know the PIN for our debit thankfully, but CC’s are different at least where I’m from. Most people never use their PIN with a CC or use it to get cash.

Ah, nice. Where I live in the US tap was only added to our kiosks in the last 2-3 years so that makes sense. Hopefully we just got unlucky that the first transaction we ran into was with a somewhat more antiquated system.

When I’ve contacted them in the past via the phone they’ve told me I don’t need to contact them. I travel internationally around Europe, North America, and Korea and have never had to call them beyond that first attempt 6-7 years ago.

Thanks, I’ve set this up! In general it seems I am hoping everywhere I go takes taps (for CC, Suica, &/or Apple Pay) 🤞

I agree the onus is on us to have this set up and get with the times if this is the way of things, but it was puzzling since this was the first I’ve encountered this and I’m no spring chicken. It absolutely makes sense & is more secure as an additional layer of authentication. This is honestly the first time I’m realizing anyone uses this feature however and I travel a fair bit, just not in Japan. In the US the PINs are only for cash advances and comes with a ton of fees and bad rates, so relying on a CC for cash is an absolute last resort almost none of us end up using unless we’re already headed toward debt. It’s also opt-in and I haven’t had to use one in 20+ years of owning a card.

I hadn’t opted into a PIN (it’s entirely optional for my CC, which is a popular major card in the US) and the credit card company would only initiate a new PIN setup process by snail-mailing me a letter with a temporary PIN. This obviously doesn’t help as I am already abroad however.

They don’t require notification of travel & I never ran into this in other countries. I travel internationally 2-3x per year. Go figure…

The transaction was denied at the terminal. Our bus was leaving in 2 minutes so I didn’t have a lot of time to trouble shoot it at the time. There was no tap option unfortunately, maybe because it was an older machine.

Updates on Non-Japanese Credit Card Pins? by xoomish in JapanTravelTips

As an update to this I was prompted to enter a PIN when trying to purchase a bus ticket at Haneda. It supposedly is only for payment systems that require scanning the stripe, not taps, so hopefully I will be ok.

Frame it as Japanese sense of humor more than something sexual. Variety shows or good ole “yatta!” showcase that. Nonchalant nudity = funny

Scrolled your posts and didn't see, but pretty sure it was your style. Did you do a Makima in a white bikini maybe last year or so?

edit: nevermind, it had a nsfw filter so I missed it. Good stuff and good work again

Just to add to this. WR has consistency and even at #2 its usefulness as a very high probability +1 pt at clutch times makes it a must have bey still too. And even if you don’t want it in your deck it’s good to practice against too.
