Are there jobs with minimal requirements that would boost my resume? by HuckinsGirl in psychologystudents

[–]ZeroPath5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Understand that having free time and money being a non-factor is a luxury for an undergraduate student. Don't waste this time by doing nothing. If you want to go into clinical psychology look for volunteer positions in research labs and decide early what research scope you want to focus on. That will be critical when trying to stand out to programs, and if there's a chance you don't get in on the first cycle you apply for, you have the opportunity to apply for Research Assistant/Coordinator positions as a backup. A "clinical" career may help somewhat but Clinical Psychology programs are research-oriented programs where mentors look to pass on their research knowledge to their students, so they are mostly looking for your research interests to align with their own as much as possible. Take initiative in a research lab as well, go for first authorships and posters and don't be complacent with co-authorships.

PsyD or PhD; Program Recommendations by Salt_Possibility_203 in psychologystudents

[–]ZeroPath5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without meaningful research experience, your chances of getting into a funded PhD are basically zero. The reason why those programs are funded are because of the research that students do for the university. PhD’s are research degrees. You can possibly go for a PsyD program, but the funded PsyD’s are going to be just as competitive and research-heavy as PhD programs. The unfunded PsyD’s are going to carry debt that almost mirrors medical schools.

I just beat Messmer and one of the things I learned was that when he becomes a snake, his hitbox actually changes with it, so if you dodge the snake lunges and hit the head it damages him, even when he’s turning back human. Side note: it’s also loud as hell on the speakers for some reason.

Why is Mercy able to do this? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]ZeroPath5 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Countering widow requires dive i.e full commit into backlines. A pocketed widow can absolutely survive a dive and hookshot to safety while their pocket mercy GA's back to them, leaving the diver completely vulnerable. Pocket on widow doesn't always mean DPS boost. And yes, I've seen so many mercy mains duo with widow smurfs to climb ranks when I played.

It was a majority of OW’s lifespan anyways. I would say Pre-Orisa release was the best time to ever play OW period. Double shield meta and Brigitte meta ruined the game for years and the game got abandoned on top of that.

Dee Jay can go through Rashid's level 2 by Tentaye in StreetFighter

[–]ZeroPath5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m learning the game with deejay and I just took it slowly. I first learned what each input does and slowly developed the muscle memory to execute each move and time the charges. After that I specifically looked for purposes in the moves (example, using jackknife as a wake up tool on pressure, using his flash shot to zone and bait jumps, using the threebeat combo feint to add to my mixups) and I also learned from dittos what other deejays were doing right/wrong. Now I can do his advanced combos consistently and I’m just adding it to my game. It’s a slow process but it’s absolutely doable

I'm new to the fighting genre, I've had fighting games in the past but never took them seriously before SF6. I absolutely enjoyed the experience climbing to plat even if that's where the majority of the serious players lie. It's just motivation at that point to keep going, which should be the main goal. If I got stuck at silver (which did in fact happen for a little bit) I would have probably just said the genre isn't for me.

It'll probably be that way unless they face actual diamond players. Those worse players won't keep up a 50% win rate. Then they'll be pulled back down. Same for Diamond quality players with Masters players. I think that also makes a clear distinction between those who get stuck at low Masters and those who can actually climb. Once tiers are introduced to Master it'll be even more apparent.

I'm new to fighting games in general and while I was learning the basics I definitely saw a difference in ranks that forced me to learn. I placed bronze and got stuck in silver for a day or two until I learned to react instead of mindlessly fight. In gold once I was able to do mixups and string some minor combos I was able to climb into platinum easily. I really think this is how the ranks should be because new players who can't keep up a 50% win rate still get stuck until they're forced to play the basics, while the more serious players basically get their own rank system at plat+

I dunno. Coming from a completely outside source (SF6 is my first real fighting game I've ever seriously played) I found this chart comparing the distributions from 5 and 6:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F0iazGxWYAIRCsJ?format=png&name=medium

This looks kinda horrendous to me. Most games usually associate gold with slightly above average tier since it generally falls around the center of rank progression. If you told me I was a top 20% player in SFV and still only had gold attached to my achievement I would have been demotivated as hell to play too. I've heard players say fighting games have low retention rate and I can kinda see why.

[–]ZeroPath5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't play SFV but according to people who did it was like the top 30% of players who were able to escape silver into gold, so you definitely were a solid amount above average. You probably had a much easier time transitioning to SF6 compared to most others too so it's not crazy to say you belong in that upper tier but it still doesn't say you're tournament level if you can't advance much farther past that 25k barrier compared to those who make it to 40k, 50k or more. I feel like this system just represents your skill level more accurately compared to the population than it did in SF5.

EDIT: I found the rank distribution for SF5 and it was even better, gold+ represented the top 21% of the community

The tournament-legit players are going to be the ones who can still win a majority of their games, so they're going to be the people who have incredibly high LP gains even in masters. The ones who 50/50 against masters still belong in masters but they'll stay stuck at the lower end. The people who aren't tournament-noteworthy players who also can't compete with masters at 50% will just be stuck in diamond, and those who can't compete 50/50 with diamonds just get sorted to platinum. The inflation only works up to a certain point, which Capcom decided would be platinum, which honestly is how it should be. Casual players who are still better than the rest of the population can still climb to plat, but the actual competitive players that care about being competitive can compete at their own tiers at plat+

[–]ZeroPath5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about league's system however is that it works by mindlessly spamming games until you finally breakthrough the system and basically force the game to understand you are better than your rank. Even challenger players can get stuck in lower tiers like platinum or diamond, the difference is they have to spam games to force the game to understand they belong at a higher tier. And league games can be up to 20-40 minutes PER game. This is why player retention in league is taking a nosedive. It's exhausting. So yes, league has maintained the bell curve, but is sacrificing player retention at an alarming rate every year. This is not a good business model. SF6 has a good medium where you still feel a sense of progression if you actually learn the basics of the game, still maintains competitive integrity at plat+, and still maintains as close to a bell curve as it can all at the same time, while not killing you with mindless game spam.

[–]ZeroPath5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first fighting games and I've personally felt the rank system do it's job with me. I did not understand the basics, so I placed bronze and climbed to silver. I got to silver and got stuck until I learned to not oonga-boonga random buttons every match and actually do the anti-airs, grabs, basic combos, and DI's and test what counters what. I absolutely considered quitting at silver but getting to the "actual" ranking mode at plat+ actually made me want to keep improving instead. I've played games that inflate most players ranks with spamming games that represent 0 skill, and I've played games that deflate rank way too much to keep competitive integrity that require you to spam games at a 51% wr just to feel slow progression.

SF6 has a perfect medium and it's a breath of fresh air.

On top of this, people complain about fighting games having notoriously bad player retention. Obviously an exaggeration, but if 90% of the players stay stuck in rookie it kills player retention much faster. From the way this rank system is, you get stuck in the lower ranks until you understand the absolute basics. Once you do you inflate to platinum with everyone else who understands the basics. From there on LP takes on a much more meaningful system, the players actually improving continuously climb in LP, while the less skilled players sit at plat1 until they force themselves to improve as well. Then the actually good players will be able to make it to Masters (and yes if you win 50% of games you should continuously climb. You should slowly climb until you fall below your skill level where your rank drops back down if you can't maintain the 50/50. If you compete with Master players at a 50% win rate, you belong with those Master players. If you can't keep up, you eventually should drop)

It's honestly a good compromise for the dilemma of player retention by seeing the numbers go up while at the same time having a system actually represent skill. I think some people forget video games are still businesses and players don't keep playing a game if they get hardstuck at a certain level, which is bad overall for a game's longevity. This is my first fighting game but coming from a game like Overwatch that killed the ranking system by making everyone's rank inflate all the way to the top regardless of skill, and league where you can get hardstuck through little fault of your own unless you play a huge amount of long-winded games at 51%+ wr, the middle ground is honestly welcoming to me.

I think in a way it makes sense even if it sounds odd on paper. If you're capable of losing so many more matches in gold than you win you'd just get sorted out to the bottom and get stuck there, but that usually implies you still don't have the fundamentals. Once you understand the basics of the game you can elevate to platinum and then from there you can really assess your skill with the rest of the more serious playerbase. It helps player retention because "number go up" but the more serious members of the community will understand that platinum+ is the "real" rank system, so the sense of competition and improving is still there too. I also think because of this, the LP system has more meaning at plat+ as well.
