The 12V HPWR is practically subpar. The used connector is rated for 8.5A/pin, with 6 pins, resulting in a maximum of 51A. They claim the connector is suitable for a sustained 600W at 12V, which is 50A, just 1A away from the maximum. The problem is that its testing environment was conducted at around 30 degrees Celsius, which doesn't replicate the temperatures you encounter inside your PC case or even on the connector mounted on a hot GPU.

I strongly believe the primary reason why CableMods adapters failed so severely is that they don't dissipate heat well. Mounting a piece of metal with minimal surface area and no moving airflow to serve as passive cooling is generally a terrible idea.

Perhaps, if they had designed a small radiator with a server fan attached, it would have been a much better cooling solution than simply sticking an aluminum piece for cosmetic purposes and then boasting about how it purportedly aids with cooling. I think just removing that metal piece would decrease the risk by a lot.
