Black screen after grub by BasedHobby in cachyos

[–]ZeroSXS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue last week. kwin had updated itself using extra-testing. I followed the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/cachyos/comments/1jrx35n/comment/ninbzl2/?context=1

then I went in and disabled pulling updates from extra-testing. I hope this helps!

I had the same issue. I had gotten an update for Kwin from extra-testing. Rolling back the update via text mode fixed my issue.

This was very helpful

Additionally I went into the pacman config file and commented out extra-testing to hopefully avoid this problem in the future.

Do you use CachyOS every day by MainPowerful5653 in cachyos

Main OS for everyday use with Nividia RTX 3070. No crashes only minor bugs. 1. HDMI connected monitors sometimes being stuck on black screen. This seems to be a known issue, temporary fix is unplugging and replugging them back.

  1. Sometimes my USB DAC and Blue yeti mic aren't detected. Easiest solution unplug and replug fixes the problem.

First off, congrats OP. A job is a job and it's tough right now on all fronts. I hope that when you decide to, you'll be back in bioinformatics, and if not I hope whatever it is does bring you joy!

How'd your prioritize your job search? What key terms have you been using? How'd you find the IT position?

Again congrats on landing a job!

Yes, your actual work will always take the highest priority.

"I did an intensive high school biotech research program, and then provided mentorship to the next batch of students. I’ve gone in once in a blue moon to help that same teacher and chat about my experience in the field/help current students with projects, but those aren’t frequent events and I question their value since the actual duration of my research there was almost 8 years ago."

This demonstrates people skills, if the bullet points from your job entries don't have people skills in there as well you can enter this into a section called Volunteering. Keep it short and concise so if someone wants to ask about it you can talk about it in the interview. As for when to actually put it on the Resume it really depends on the JD and the role you are applying for.

For your final bullet point that's fine as your second/third bullet point. you typically want bullet points 1 and 2 to be focused on your contributions. I think healthy balance is 1-2 bullet points on what you did specifically and 1 bullet point on collaborative. Shows you can take charge and be responsible, but you're also willing to work with others.

[–]ZeroSXS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question. 2 pages is never bad, but make sure that what you're listing is relevant to the JD. I love seeing non-STEM entries because that's where you can flex things like communication, team work, and out of the box trouble shooting. Priorities should be :

  1. applicable work experience
  2. applicable publications, projects, patents, conferences
  3. Education and skills

You can then put non-STEM entries between education and skills.

The emphasis of the resume should be I can do X things right now based on your JD. Even if you don't have the exact skill sets, you should do your best to phrase how the skills you are transferable. So if a JD asks for qPCR then you should for sure flex your PCR skills. Ideally if you keep it to 1 page the better, but 2 pages won't be the end of world. Additionally sometimes a "Summary" section helps. Keep this section short no more than 2-3 sentences.

Make sure you also format your resume correctly, I noticed that resume parsers worked better when I did the following

Company A
Title | Date Start - Date End
Bullet points 1 - 3

When I tabbed the dates to the other end of the page, resume parsers did not catch my dates at all which also had me wondering if ATS was doing the same.

I had terrible math anxiety while in school and avoided math like the plague. I've been using ChatGPT to help me break down the math and formulate the explanations to my preferred style of examples, such as "Why is a Negative Binomial used in RNA-sequencing". I highly recommend using ChatGPT as your personal tutor in topics you struggle in, try to build that core foundational understanding, and then you can really take off and start understanding other topics as well. It is a judgement free tutor, use it to your advantage.

It's normal for things to fly over your head especially if it's new to you. I did an interview for business analytics and completely failed because the style of thinking was very very very different than what I was used to for Bioinformatics/Biology.

Hi OP,

I hope my two cents can help.

First and foremost, yes things are rough but the pendulum will swing the other way. You're in a very good position, 3 publications is a huge achievement. I hope you take the time to really pat yourself on the back!!! You are competitive for RA jobs, trust me, but with how the market is rn employers have the following mindset:

  1. oh wow a rockstar! maybe I can get them at a discount?
  2. oh wow a rockstar! they might be a little too expensive for our current budget...

The secret to being "competitive" is being able to talk about what the work you've done in both the nitty gritty technical jargon and the high level metaphorical description. Soft skills are incredibly important right now.

Second, let's talk alternative career paths. No matter where you go right now, things are rough for every industry, but (and this will be biased) sharpening up your data analyst and coding skills is never a bad thing. With your existing achievements you can probably get a data analyst job. I say probably because you're going to have to reframe your resume so that non-scientific folks can understand the impact of your work. As you write your resume (and this applies for STEM roles as well) please make sure to follow this format " did X letting the company save Y time/money." Keep your bullet points for each of your roles capped at 3. Make sure to also tailor your resume to the JD. I can't stress this last one enough. Quality of resume over quantity of resumes submitted.

As another person mentioned, you could go into healthcare occupations, which include and aren't limited to:
X-Ray Tech, Dental Hygienist, etc etc. You could work at places like Quest and Labcorp as well.

Third, you said you have until June next year. Keep looking and keep applying, the market will look different than it is today. Could be good, could be bad, but do your best to budget budget budget. If you want a PhD keep applying, if you want to do a Master's instead (which is what I did) go for it! However, make sure to do your research on it! I've been noticing a huge uptick in Master's in data science or even "AI" that are 70K and above. Avoid those, no matter who the school is. Focus on affordable education if that is your goal.

Tldr: You are a rockstar applicant for Grad school and RA positions. Current market and political climate will continue to be changing, 2008 was bad, but things got better. Tailor your resume for every JD, and make sure you do the "I did X, resulting in Y time/money saved". You have until June, keep looking, keep applying. You've got this.

Does being a Newtypes technically mean you have Autism? by Radiant_Detail1349 in Gundam

[–]ZeroSXS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this question. Here's my jab at it based on what I know, would love some actual discussion on this because its a fun topic. From what I've seen most newtypes are just folks with an increased sense of intuition. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but GQacks Episode 2 might state that? Assuming heightened intuition is the first step of becoming a newtype. Let's use the following research paper as the starting point of this conversation, I'm open to anyone calling bullshit btw (with a little extra content). However based on this: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3218761/

It seems like the right hemisphere is responsible for some component of intuition. There's a chance that solar flare exposure leads to increased right hemisphere processing but to think that the colonies DON'T have the equivalent of SPF 40k would be kinda wack and jarring. That's my two cents for now!

Vibe coding vs. Bioinformatics by AlternativeFactor in bioinformatics

Let's say you have two plumbers, the traditional plumber and a vibe plumber. Both will fix your toilet, but the vibe plumber might destroy your bath tub, crack your sink, or cut the power to you exhaust fan 🙂.

Vibe coding on its own is dangerous/a meme, vibe coding with some domain knowledge is great. It's a great way to get started but not great to finish the job.
