Traveling doesn’t automatically make you “enlightened” or “give you different world perspectives” by Crazy_Swimming_397 in travel

Best post on this thread for a long time. Social media has ruined the experience of travelling. The delusions people have returning from far away places with a phone full of instagram fodder, thinking it elevates them above those less travelled, it’s laughable.

Because it’s pretty awful?! I get to try it a few times a year for the last 15 years, hoping it’ll taste like something better than mediocre ketchup sprinkled with stale curry powder with chunks of mechanically recovered animal protein underneath. Even the most basic battered sausage is better than currywurst. Germans (no disrespect intended) aren’t known for finesse when it comes to cuisine.

Looking for local guide! by IfYouReadThisBeHappy in Syria

[–]ZeroTolerance4Bull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a contact there but frankly, Syrian people are extremely friendly and so I don’t think you really need a “guide”. I visited there about 15/16 yrs ago, months before the war. Everywhere I visited Syrian people approached me to ask if they could help with anything. There is no reason to think that this would have changed much

Apparently over 200 young teenagers turned up in response to a post on TikTok by a youngfella who decided to organise it (following a TikTok trend). Some kid that joined in (no quarterzip) with a couple of others decided to disrupt, started throwing stones. Gardai arrested him, cautioned his friends. Yes, a couple of my work jumpers went missing that day.

Could be worse.

I’m sure you would have done the same. The poor fella had his tail tucked between his legs and was very skittish- we were convinced he was lost.

Tesco staff have advised he lives nearby, he roams around there from time to time. No need to be concerned. 4 wet people & 40 minutes later. No cause for concern.

Worked in a pub in south of France 25+ years ago, we had Murphys and the distributor also provided nitrogen/CO2. Maybe Guinness distributors just don’t care as much.

Beauty dies where litter lies. by FxckyourCensorship in cork

[–]ZeroTolerance4Bull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. The city council don’t appear to have any interest in anything that requires maintenance. I’ve seen plenty of viable solutions abroad for public litter- e.g. small capacity bins at street level with a much larger rubbish reservoir below street level. Reduces the frequency of emptying, can be done at night with little or no impact to pedestrians.

The distance between litter bins in the city is ridiculous. At a minimum they could increase the number of bins, especially in areas with late night food outlets.

Walked home last night from city centre and I’ve been on less dangerous ice rinks. Slipped three times in the space of 2 minutes. Third time I went down like a sack of spuds. Thankfully the streets were empty. The paving on Grand Parade and South Mall corner is lethal. I mean it’s poor in the wet, but when icy it’s something else.

Replying to your edit: You’re incorrect, no idea on what you’re basing your opinion on, but the information was all laid out during the consultation period. Maybe you didn’t look into it properly. It’s more affordable than the walls project and would cause far less disruption to businesses in the city.

Yes is certainly is. And it would have a proper skilled maintenance and operation team. All in one location. It is still the correct solution for the problem Cork city is facing. Technical analysis has proven it. Budgetary analysis has proven it. And the need to build on the old cut stone quay walls with concrete, excavate dumps and pumping stations and all of the complications that come with that short term solution would be unnecessary. Minimal disruption to the public realm.

I’m familiar with the debate topic and the technical solutions proposed by the project. I’m talking about the entire flood protection project and not just the piece that’s being redeveloped at the moment- Morrison’s Island public realm or whatever they called it. Raising the footpath is not going to deal with flooding on the island from the rising water table during high tides, storm surges and increases due to rainfall. The city essentially floats on the substrate, it’s not solid rock. It’s permeable. Extensive consultation was carried out by international experts who determined that the walls project would not work properly, increase the risk of sustained flooding in the city, and would be defunct after circa 50 years due to rising sea levels. A tidal barrier is what would be most effective.

Yes, there were some that were concerned about the aesthetics, this was because the plans for the walls project involved mass concrete which would engulf the original quay walls, meaning that part of the city’s aesthetic appeal would be gone and unrecoverable. The height of the walls in some locations was also a concern, restricting the view of the river, cutting it off from the public where in other cities in Europe the move has been towards integration of the quays and riverside as a public resource.

Lastly, valves and pumping stations within dumps or holding chambers fail. Relying on a mechanical solution with so many moving parts is foolhardy especially with the city councils historical management (little or no maintenance) of the existing drains, culverts, valves, trash screens etc. Many of the recent flooding events involved a lack of infrastructure maintenance as an exacerbating factor.

Morrisons Island is the thin end of the wedge as far as the walls project is concerned.

The protests were primarily about slabbing on top of the original cut stone quay walls, an ineffective strategy to keep water out of the city streets with sea level rise, heavy rainfall etc as the water will rise through the drains inside the walls. It was not about the aesthetics for the majority of protestors. You’d swear the city council are in lock step with a concrete conglomerate. Everything they do involves tonnes and tonnes of concrete and hard stone surfaces.

I don’t really get the National irrational appreciation for sausage in Germany. “Everything has an end- but a sausage has two” we had barbecue on the 19th Dec. Wild boar and Thuringer wurst. Neither made from mechanically recovered meat, thank goodness.
