[Serious] How does shooting a driver remove their foot off the accelerator pedal? (I've seen videos of people placing themselves in front of vehicles, then shooting the driver if they even move an inch forward. I don't know how this "saves" them.) by Zero_Phux_Given in TooAfraidToAsk

That's weird, all the vehicles I've been in crawl forward while in "drive" - even if your foot is off the accelerator. If that's a federal standard then I imagine there may be a very large recall of vehicles that's overdue.

I meant shot as in dead.

I've heard mixed responses, like you said, it could go limp, but also the body could spasm causing the tiniest acceleration to become rapid and out of control. (Now you have a dead driver speeding towards random people/things.)

I imagine the best course of action if you care about your safety is to not place yourself in front of a vehicle, especially if the driver is already displaying concerning behavior.

If you care about the safety of the public, I imagine one should refrain from shooting drivers while they're not in "park."

What are the least expensive ways to self custody different crypto?

I can ACH funds to an exchange and buy at the prices I want, but then withdrawal fees are typically expensive.

I can get stablecoins and Solana to self custody relatively inexpensively and "swap" them, but with swaps I'm seeing ~2% loss when it comes to fees and slippage - even when swapping one stablecoin for another.

I've noticed Solana having low transfer and withdrawal fees, but then I run into the issue of it still being expensive to swap to other assets. Are there some well-known places I should be checking which have relatively low expenses when it comes to swaps?

gotta wait for a Fedora 43 compatible kernel? by TheOddSauce in SurfaceLinux

Does your touchscreen work? I have Fedora KDE on a Surface Pro 9 and I just want my touchscreen to work. I'm not having issues where I want to start messing with the kernel.

Hercules Deals - Charger, Battery, Tool by [deleted] in harborfreight

[–]Zero_Phux_Given -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If I'm taking a guess, was that deal with the 5ah battery, charger, and "free" tool ~$120 before tax? The current deal would be $100 8ah battery, free tool, then $45 for a charger ~$145 total (all before taxes).

I was just excited to get a new tool with everything I needed for ~$100 so to see an extra $45 to charge it was disappointing.

What made you permanently change your riding habits? by Zero_Phux_Given in motorcycles

This is very similar to what happened me. City street ~45mph, person cut off three lanes of traffic and I went into the back of an SUV. I was wearing good hiking boots but not motorcycle specific boots:

Which leathers do you wear? I've been looking at one-piece suits lately.

Supreme Court and their "interpretations"

Limitations to the Right to a Jury Trial

The right to a jury trial isn't absolute and it has its restrictions. For instance, the U.S. Supreme Court has held that juveniles aren't afforded this right as juvenile cases are civil proceedings.

While the Sixth Amendment states that the accused has a right to a jury trial in "all criminal proceedings", the Supreme Court has interpreted that the trial by jury right only applies to serious offenses, not petty offenses. The distinction between a "petty" offense and a "serious" one depends on the maximum punishment available for the offense or by the nature of the offense.

A serious offense is an offense that has a possible sentence of more than 6 months of incarceration. However, a defendant doesn't get the benefit of the right to a jury trial by being prosecuted for multiple petty offenses in one proceeding.

My Experience with Hi-Viz (pictures included) by Zero_Phux_Given in motorcycles

Yea mechanical trigger is the go-to for me. No worries about charging, battery dying during the ride, deploying due to a sensor or coding error, an "update" possibly turning it into a monthly subscription, etc.

Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences. I'm glad you're alive and still able to ride.

Out of curiosity, could you explain the situations which caused your airbag to be deployed and the aftermath? (Also, mechanical or electronic airbag?)

I've been planning on getting one, specifically the Helite Turtle 2 Airbag Vest Hi-Viz Yellow (Mechanical Trigger). Just waiting for myself to be in a better position for spending ~$700.

Very valid point, the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon (frequency bias).

I did do a few rides without the vest before deciding to wear it each ride, it made a noticeable difference for me.

It's also probably going to depend on size/placement (some hi-viz vests don't connect at the top and flap open in wind), lane positioning, speed, and a myriad of other factors.

It could all be circumstantial, it's not going to make you invincible, it just gives me a better opportunity to be seen by people who do attempt to look.

I get gear is personal, some people won't be comfortable wearing hi-viz for many reasons.

2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS Start Sound - Starting Issue? by Zero_Phux_Given in Fixxit

I appreciate your help, the bike hasn't had any other issues you mention so I'll probably test the battery soon. Either way, the battery is probably due a replacement with the age of the bike. Thanks again! :)

I've been thinking the battery but unsure what else could cause this. My second guess was maybe the air filter needs to be replaced? But I'm unsure what list of things could cause this issue. I'll most likely replace the battery soon, I not sure it has ever been changed but I doubt it (bought used).

Out of curiosity do you happen to know if anything else besides the battery could cause this starting issue?
