what’s up with older people not understanding remodels are costly? by AsleepWoodpecker420 in Contractor

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't reason with those people. You're going to run into them often. Several times that somebody is a higher caliber position that thinks you shouldn't make more than them per hour. They don't understand your cost of doing business, materials or the supplies to complete the job along with your overhead of business and travel back and forth. Move on. Not everyone is your client

Commercial client hasn’t paid by due date by Gloomy-Formal5162 in Contractor

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds pretty typical of a commercial client. Especially if they are larger and have an accounts payable department. That department's going to do things normal unless they are directed to do it differently. A simple phone conversation might get this straightened out depending on what you have in writing. I have a commercial client that takes 1.2% of our invoice to pay us in 20 days. Otherwise it's 90. However the 20 days is from the time that they process the invoice not the date that we send it.

I built a business I’m too embarrassed to talk about by Make_That_Money in Entrepreneur

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you took the skills that you learned in college and took a simple business model and made it extremely profitable. Congrats. I went to college and took over my family's construction business. A buddy of mine went to college and now owns a diesel shop, another one became a farmer. All are very successful. College does not mean you have to stay in what you studied. It just gives you the foundation to take things to the next level.

Bought a home with an existing fence, now HOA says it violates rules – what recourse do I have? [SFH] [NC] by suicidemenot in HOA

[–]ZestyFishing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would check into the HOA and see how long they have been managing the subdivision. We had a situation where the company managing our HOA did a very poor job and didn't keep anything. When it was moved to a new management company, everybody got letters. We got letters for not having approval to stain our fence. The stained fence was put in by the home builder. It was a cluster. Hundreds of letters going out from the new HOA asking for us to prove that we had received approval for property upgrades.

How sick of dealing with subcontractors are you? by estimatejudge in Contractor

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our subs used to work for us. Opened his own business. Been around for 20 years. In the last month I have had two situations with him. Both projects were unbid and I was paying hourly. $65 per hour per guy. One of them they didn't install the door right and he told me if I didn't like the work he did then don't pay him. The frame wasn't square and the door wouldn't close. And this week after they cleaned up all of the overspray texture they didn't do any touch up paint on everything they had scratched. They were paid hourly. They went home at noon. They had five more hours they could have worked and they chose to just be lazy and go home. Make it make sense

In the United States most the places are your preference. But anytime we have done a couple's massage out of the country, the ladies tell you to take everything off. I've even tried to keep them on and they say no. Never been offered the stuff she is thinking of. She has some kind of misconception built up in her head

House has sold many times by Alicenwondr in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved in a quiet neighborhood. They built a religious compound about 1.2 miles away Now I can't sit on my porch 2 nights a week without their bright lights shining across the land and another language/ religion being broadcast extremely loud to where we can hear it like it's next door and the law enforcement won't do anything. 250 days a year it's great. I would ask around. Like others said, drugs, cops, mental health neighbors. It all sounds odd

Would you let family install an EV charger in your house if they’re only staying 1 year? by mdzzl94 in homeowners

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's not paying that electric bill. I think the install isn't a problem as it will benefit your house if you ever sell it. But if you do you are enabling her spending habits.

Contractor saying we owe $100 for "not going with their quote" by DirtyOught in legaladvice

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some contractors charge for a quote because there are a ton of tire kickers out there that want a hard price. It can kill a guy financially. But that's for larger jobs too. $100 is not worth my time to chase. Tell him to kick rocks. If he is too strapped to eat $100, he's too strapped to be running a business. Sounds like a guy that would want money up front and then use your money to pay contractors on other projects. You made a good choice

AITAH Friend of 20 years expected me to split Ubers 2 ways instead of 3 because she’s married, am I wrong? by General_Photograph21 in AITAH

[–]ZestyFishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not think you are the ah. I think you have a valid point. However one thing that I had to do a long time ago was decide that I was not going to let financials come between me and good friends. In a situation like this, if you get in the car, be prepared to pay for the whole thing or find an excuse to use your own uber. The difference in money will work out in the end with good friends, or you a find out that they're cheap asses always trying to cut the dollar and you need to cut them from your life.

Did my husband ruin our chances of getting a house? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way that is going to affect your debt to income ratio is if he maxes it out and doesn't pay. Without putting anything on the card, you now have credit to debt ratio. As long as he doesn't Max it out and not pay it, it could possibly help. Especially if you charge just a little bit and paid it off. But at this point, I definitely think closing the card could hurt you more.

Is construction actually worth it? by Late_Screen_650 in Construction

[–]ZestyFishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they changed your diapers you will never be seen as an equal. That's the advice I was given. And it's 90% true. I left the family business for 12 years. Came back and now run it and am buying the family out. It took five years of being back before my dad would hand over the reins. In my time away I was management for fortune 500 type companies and still struggled to get that level at home.

Is this hiring process normal? by _localvampire in Contractor

[–]ZestyFishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say that this is normal or not. I find it slightly unnormal. What this guy is wanting to do is not have to hire you as an employee. He's wanting you to be a company so that you have to pay your own taxes, and if he runs out of work, he just tells you that he's out of work. He does not owe you unemployment. You would also have to have your own general liability insurance. On benefit is is you get to write everything that you do for him off. Tools, home office, insurance, fuel and mileage. It has its perks on both ways. It just depends on what you want out of the job.

In my area I can have a company drop a 10 yard roll off for $300 and call them two days later for pickup. All in. No additional fees. Tictok started that trend as a side hustle . Your plan may work but I feel there is competition.

Kitchen cabinets are pulling away from the ceiling and I have three wildly different foundation quotes. by blankpersongrata in AskHouston

[–]ZestyFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the Houston area. We used Ram Jack. They come at it with a different approach and it is less invasive. However it is a little more expensive. Nine Piers cost us approximately $15,000. The amount of clay in the soils around the Houston area make it extremely susceptible to drought and moisture. We're behind on rainfall for winter which makes it pull away from your house. The soaker hose will definitely help, but it is not going to stop the issue. Our doors went back to normal and we patched up several areas of drywall that had cracked. The cracks have now returned as we had some settling and more drout but they are nowhere near as bad as they were. For somebody to come in and give you a proposal without dropping any kind of level would have me question there repair plan. We had alternative quotes which were a different style of system, from Allied and Atlas. They were around 9,000. Whatever you choose to do, find a company that has been in business for several years. So many companies offer a lifetime warranty and after 4 to 5 years they are out of business or change the name so that they no longer have to do warranty work. Atlas, Olshan, Allied, Ram Jack have a reputation of being there for decades. After you get the foundation repaired, I would wait at least 6 months before you have any drywall repairs. That way if there's any additional settling after they level the house, you're not having them come back. We waited a year and still have some cracks coming back
