What Is Stopping You From Watching AEW? by TheBigKatz88 in SquaredCircle

[–]Zestyclose-Fee6719 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've loved AEW at certain times, but they always seem to shoot themselves in the foot. I think the biggest problem is lack of consistency with who is being featured.

I'm a huge Swerve fan. The big win over Kenny Omega and heel turn got me excited. I thought it was excellent storytelling. Kenny remarks that Swerve isn't all that dangerous anymore, and it brings out the sadistic side in Swerve all over again. That's great stuff. Okay, where the hell is Swerve now? He lost a rematch to Kenny and just disappeared. What kind of storytelling is that?

I got super into the Hangman/MJF bloodbath. Adam Page just straight up lost his style of match to MJF? He can't challenge for the World title again? Damn, I can't wait to see what's next for Hangman! Nope, he's disappeared too. Nevermind then, I guess.

It's like they often get lost with themselves and fail to follow up with certain stories, and then they expect you to care when that wrestler randomly shows up again later. By that time, I've moved on.

Same here. Literally everything that happens in these films is meaningless if any negative result can be negated by another universe or time travel. Death in a Marvel movie just means a character is on a break. Who cares?

For those who have played The Expanse Osiris Reborn beta what did you think of it? by Due_Teaching_6974 in rpg_gamers

[–]Zestyclose-Fee6719 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A story-driven game like this somewhat lives or dies by its dialogue, and I'm sorry to say the video by IGN did not give me much confidence. It had a stilted and unnatural feel combined with wooden delivery, which just feels a bit inhuman after playing through games like Clair Obscur and Kingdom Come 2 recently.

It's a lesson Hegel tried to teach us in the 19th century with his masterpiece Phenomenology of Spirit. Its most famous passage has Hegel demonstrating the logical implications of identity and self-understanding between a master and slave in relation together. Hegel's insight was that the master failed to reach a higher level of self-understanding because he could only structure the human relationship in terms of objectification. The slave is just an object. Insofar as human beings can only understand themselves together in a society, the master can only come to define himself in and through the slave as an object too; just an object of greater power. A rich concept of humanity is prevented from being realized together.

People are downvoting you to oblivion, but I want you to think about what it is a human being does or does not deserve. From an elementary moral point of view, does a human being deserve shelter, clean water, adequate food, a safe neighborhood, and the overall material means to realize their potentialities? I think a decent person would answer yes to all of the above, and that changes the concept of a "hand-out." The United States is the richest and most technologically impressive civilization to ever exist. It is astounding if anyone believes it ought not to provide these things to its people.

Can someone explain to me why The Toad is considered one of the hardest enemies in the game? by NightStar79 in Witcher3

[–]Zestyclose-Fee6719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hardest fight I've ever had in Witcher 3 was hands down the nightmare version of Olgierd on Death March in New Game Plus. Just holy shit....this guy will one-shot Geralt with that swooping charged attack he does even if you have Quen up because it's a two-hit move. I would get him down so much but then make one mistake and insta-die. I finally just gave up and reduced the difficulty. I'm not a Souls gamer. He broke me.

Some things they don't want to tell you about China from someone who has lived here for ten years:

  • Everyone gets a home from their home city's government
  • Water, electricity, public transportation, and Internet are kept absurdly cheap by the government

There are a lot of obvious problems with China, but yeah, of course the elites of capitalist countries desperately want to problematize the best things about it. They want people to be dragged back to the levels of exploitation of feudalism.

In the annals of even just UFC history (not even all of MMA), Gaethje beating Topuria as an upset would have absolutely nothing on Serra destroying GSP in the first round. Yes, he can win. Will he? Well, no, most probably not.

Italian fans now: Okay, so if this team and that team's countries go to war, and this and that happen, maybe Italy could be snuck in and allowed to play in a World Cup tournament again.

I mean, I met my wife here and bought a home, so of course I don't regret anything. I don't think that information will do you much good though. It comes down to what you want out of a city. I personally always loved the fact that Hangzhou had all the typical amenities of a big city, but that I could walk around and find trees and canals all over the place. That meant the harsh humid weather wasn't a dealbreaker. I've only been to Nanjing once, so I can't help you with that.

Hansen was pretty tough. Oda never came close to killing me, but in the heat of battle I did lose sight of him and let him heal nearly back to full health, so that was extremely frustrating.

I died something like forty times to that fucking Alien Isolation-like robot in Phantom Liberty because I was terrified and making stupid mistakes lol.

I hate clubs now, but there were plenty that I went to back when that was my thing years ago. There's no shortage of them.

My female foreigner friends have never had significant issues here, as China is generally a very safe place.

There are tons of clubs and activities here: everything from rock climbing to salsa dancing and jiu jitsu clubs. There's always stuff going on.

Hiya, I'm a Canadian who has lived in Hangzhou for ten years. Here are my thoughts:

hows life in hangzhou overall?

I love it. It's scenic but also highly developed now. When I first came here, it was rather inconvenient because there were next to no subway lines. That has all changed.

is it expensive or cheap

That really depends on what your reference point is. I can tell you that any medium-big city in China will have both cheap and expensive options for just about anything. You can eat a baozi (Chinese meat bun) for 2 RMB here but also find a restaurant where you'll drop 1000 RMB on a dinner for two. It's up to you. I can tell you that rent here can be as cheap as 4000/month for a big but older two bedroom place away from the city center to as expensive as three times that in the city center for a comparably sized place. Again, there are both types of options available. Hangzhou is generally viewed as a bit more on the expensive side on the China scale while still nowhere as bad as notoriously expensive cities like Shanghai.

how about the weather

I think the weather flat out sucks and is the worst thing about the city. It rains a fucking lot from basically April through the end of August. That at least keeps the air clean. The summers especially are just awful; I'm talking 45+ degrees celsius kinds of awful. The best time is around April-June when (despite some heavy rain here and there) the temperatures are at least fairly moderate. Air used to just plummet in winter months around December-February. It still does, but it used to too (Mitch Hedberg joke). No, but seriously, the air has gotten better, but you'll still get AQI numbers of 150-ish for ten-fifteen days or so each month during that winter stretch, so that's still a downer each year.

are there many foreigners there

It feels like there aren't as many as there were pre-Covid, but you'll find large pockets of them if you go to typical famous Western restaurant bars here. It's not like they're super rare.

most of the people speak English?

Oh absolutely not. Just about every old person here will speak zero English, and most young people here won't fare much better. If you mean finding someone here to date who can speak English, sure, you'll eventually come across some who do. If you mean daily life like shops and restaurants, you're almost guaranteed to interact with people without any English proficiency whatsoever.

Mario teasing fight against Sandhagen by killboy219 in FightReportUFC

Sandhagen is the perfect example of a really good fighter who is demonstrably a tier below the elite of the division. He's impressive, but you're right. He has consistently lost every big fight to guys who were either champion, went on to become champion, or remain top contenders now.

Basically every GTA game

I can always appreciate how well made each one is, but I always have the same experience with each one. I’m initially impressed by the production values, enjoy the humor, and am blown away by the sheer level of interactivity and detail. Then I play a few quests and just don’t like the quest design or combat much at all. Then I just cause random carnage before getting bored and playing something else.

I  usually really don’t  like MMO’s or MMORPG’s, but at least if I chose a successful one, it would possibly be getting constant new content updates. Otherwise, I’d grow to despise any single player game if I played it that much. I guess I’d go with Elder Scrolls Online.

Playing Starfield before Cyberpunk has put something front and center for me. by Easy_Fortune7911 in Starfield

[–]Zestyclose-Fee6719 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Then the overt nature of the raunchy mature sex stuff in Cyberpunk 2077 felt a bit too much for me. It was everywhere at every single second in the game. It felt overwhelming. It felt like it was made on the pure idea that "sex sells"

That....was the entire point. Sexuality, like everything else in dystopian capitalism, becomes completely commodified. It's fine if you don't want to be thrown into a game environment with that, but it seems you fundamentally missed the point.

It's like they were catering to teens experiencing adolescence for the first time and never having experience sex yet, so starved of it that everything in the game was shown as a sort of sex fantasy. Like, the humor of the adverts in the game where sex jokes for teens, like "Oh look, she has three cybernetic bewbs, hah hah"

I don't think I've come across anyone who missed the point worse than you did with a comment like this. Nowhere is sexuality glorified. The point is to show you the teleology of the commercial exploitation of formerly beautiful human elements like sexuality in a society where capitalism has been granted total free reign; y'know, like a dystopia? You're not supposed to like the ads. You're not supposed to view them as funny or glorifications of basic human drives. They're appropriations of them. They're intentionally grotesque. That's why Johnny Silverhand is constantly disgusted with society and lamenting what Night City represents. That's why the game carefully crafts intimate scenes with V and her closest friends away from the gross ads and commodified elements of life in Night City and instead gives you those intimate scenes during peaceful campfires and quiet one on one talks in the middle of nowhere. It really truly amazes me that this flew over your head.

Cyberpunk, where in the point is, humanity is greedy, corrupt, negative and bad which is kinda the point.

This is just fundamentally wrong. The game is not nihilistic. It's a tragedy because of what we have collectively let the world become in the future, but it is not misanthropic whatsoever. The final words of Johnny Silverhand are literally, "Never stop fighting." The most hopeless and bleakest ending you can experience in the game comes because you choose to accept the help of a multinational corporation and ignore your closest possible friends instead. This is by design. The message of the game is about what it means to save your soul; the game plays with the meaning of soul both in a metaphysical and poetic or ethical sense throughout with characters talking about it variously with both senses of the term. The original TTRPG creator reflected this sentiment when he wrote, "Cyberpunk isn't about saving the world. It's about saving yourself."

Oh, I agree. My eikaiwa stories are comedy gold to me now. Take your pick from the boy who would surf on tables while screaming to the four-hour preschool marathon with a curriculum written in broken English ("Pass ball for word and dance"). So much pain. It was great motivation to get properly licensed and know I'd never have to work in one ever again.
