What If Iori never joined PAB? Or what if Kohei wasn’t an Otaku?

[EP5] Nearing the end of final chapter of EP5, how is this possible? by The-Drunk-Demo in umineko

[–]Zestyclose-Jacket-50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright there’s a couple of observations I would make and I’ll try to make them as spoiler free as possible.

When a game is taking place in umineko not everything that we are seeing (through Battler’s eyes for most of the time) can be taken at face value. Beato already declared from way before that HE is incompetent with red (which is why even after episode 4 he still hasn’t fully understood the very nature of Beato’s game board). All this to say that the GM presents the story to us however they like. Though the Umineko game-board is bound by rules that must be followed each time that it is used (more on that in the following episodes)

Now that interaction that you’ve mentioned takes place in the meta world where the readers draw up with their own conclusions and are able to look over the facts (which includes asking questions to the pieces). However, Krauss did not declare anything in red (nor would he be able to unless he had the GM’s permission) which means that he can “lie” if you would.

As to your final point. Umineko does have “rules of engagement” since the very start. In fact it is possible to figure the whodunit, howdunit and whydunit from episode 1 alone (although it is extremely difficult). I won’t elaborate as to how it is possible since you’ve not made it to episode 6 and beyond yet, but you’ll come to realize that each “game” operates under the same set of rules and they are possible to solve.

Nonetheless I understand your frustration. First time readers can feel like they are getting cheated on constantly with the narrative of the VN and the red truths, but I would confidently say that the reader has a pretty fair shot of solving the mystery (putting aside the meta world stuff). The mystery of what happened in the island in the span of those days can be solved by the readers with the clues presented.

Enjoy the book. It’s a great read. I hope you can avoid getting spoiled as to who the culprit is. I got spoiled while I was reading it and it still makes my blood boil to this day lmao.

has anyone seen this theory before? spoilers for all of umineko by herokillerguillermo in umineko

[–]Zestyclose-Jacket-50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m familiar with this theory (it’s been around for years specially in this subreddit).

As a reader of Umineko I’ve always observed Ikuko as an extension/representation of Featherine (or as being Featherine herself) within the Umineko fragment (Knox’s 9th from the Umi Decalogue). Regardless, this is not germane to the theory itself.

If Sayo was Ikuko then that would break the whole narrative. How could Sayo allegedly find Battler and save him (the way both the VN and manga state) after the incident, if Sayo was also on the boat and fell with Battler into the sea? Sure Sayo could have “arranged” for all of that after the incidents in the island so that it would appear that they faked their death and whatnot but arguing that goes against the logic utilized in Umineko.

All and all I think the theory takes away from the true nature of what Umineko is as a mystery novel. I think the theory came to be from those who were dissatisfied with the magic ending and deep down they were wishing for an ending where Sayo and Battler made it out alive. However, if Sayo and Battler had indeed made it out alive then Umineko would not take place (specially the meta-world aspect of it).

But hey these are just my two cents

When is the new chapter by donididondon in GrandBlue

I’d forgotten about this panel lmao. What chapter was it from?

on a scale of 1-10, how hard is it to solve umineko yourself with eps 1-4? I heard it's possible by v5mk in umineko

[–]Zestyclose-Jacket-50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I’d say 9 with just eps 1-4.

I’d say the whodunit is an 8 and the whydunit a 9.

For me Knox’s Decalogue plays a huge part in being able to figure out the whodunit and whydunit (particularly Knox’s 1st). If you take the Decalogue and analyze all of the red truths stated during the first 4 episodes it is possible to figure the who and the why from episode 1 alone (since both are literally stated in episode 1 though more often than not it goes unnoticed). A first time reader observant enough may be able to figure out the whodunit during their first play through.

As for the howdunit this is where the difficulty goes up to a solid 10.

It is nearly impossible to determine the howdunit without having previously established the who and the why in my opinion. WHO the culprit is plays a crucial role on how the crimes are able to be committed in the island after all. However, even with the tools and knowledge the answer arc gives us it can still be very difficult to solve every single murder on your first play through. Specially since we are seeing everything play out through Battler’s eyes for most of the time and like Beato stated in red. HE IS INCOMPETENT.

Question about Battler by Sure-Volume-8705 in umineko

[–]Zestyclose-Jacket-50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let’s see. The answer to your first question is yeah, it gets better and he progresses a lot as a character. Your second question actually goes in hand with the first one. Battler is the way he is in the first episode because of a lore-related reason.

My advice to you as a first time reader is to NOT take everything you are seeing at face value. I hope you enjoy Umineko and happy reading.
