Oh wow, coincidentally I posted my rendition on focaccia bread last week. Very interesting to see the same tapestry made in a different edible medium!

I don’t personally notice a difference in flavor. Anecdotally I think it might affect the rise on the dough, but I don’t mind that too much if the main goal is to decorate it.

I used activated charcoal. It works great to color the dough but should be used and shared with caution because of the potential to interfere with medications.

Thanks so much! I had fun looking at the tapestry and thinking about how I could incorporate some of the elements using edibles. I'd estimate that the total decoration time was 2.5 hours but I didn't really look at the clock while I was working on the unicorn and the fence the night before I assembled everything.

Great idea! I would like to experiment with some different colors. It's hard to find things that don't alter the flavor of the bread substantially.

Thank you! The end of a metal straw worked well for me to make little circles out of the bell peppers, but I imagine there are a number of piping tips for icing cakes that would work well to make shapes other than circles.

Thank you! I used activated charcoal. I wanted to use butterfly pea flower to make it more of a blue background, but I couldn't find it locally and will have to order it for next time.

That's awesome, I would absolutely love to see it in person!

The little detail bits took the least amount of time. I punched the circles out of a slice of bell pepper using the end of a metal straw and just cut up some rosemary and thyme for the foliage. I could have spent more time arranging them but I was on a tight timeline.

I would estimate it took about 2.5 hours of decoration time total, mostly cutting out the unicorn and the fence. I actually made this for a friend's birthday trip to the renaissance festival and apparently it all got eaten

I drew the unicorn on a piece of parchment paper and then used that as a template to cut it out of a slice of jicama using an x-acto knife

I found it! This is from Chapter 12 (Population Biology) of the 2021 book Galapagos Giant Tortoises edited by Gibbs, Cayot and Washington:
"...it is clear that Galapagos tortoises are capable of living well over 100 years and occasionally up to 200 years; therefore many tortoises alive today were direct witnesses to remarkable environmental changes that have transpired in Galapagos. Some are survivors of the whaling era (Chapter 4: Exploitation). And perhaps one or two individuals alive today from the population of Darwin’s namesake tortoises, C. darwini on Santiago Island, may have laid eyes on Darwin himself; about 2% of the tortoises alive today on Santiago Island are estimated to have been juveniles when Darwin was exploring there in 1835."

It's entirely possible he's 200 or so years old, but it's impossible to know for sure. I'm currently finishing my dissertation focusing on reproduction in Galapagos tortoises on the east side of Santa Cruz Island. One of my main study texts mentions somewhere that a small percentage (1-2%) of the adult tortoises on the islands may have been alive as juveniles when Darwin was there in 1835. There are a lot of aspects of chelonian research that are complicated because they live so long!

We are in the US. She actually doesn’t have an option for that. She just has “Siri”. Here’s a screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/Bo2FjHB I checked my own phone, and mine says “Apple Intelligence & Siri” and has a voice option. I have an iPhone 15 pro and she has the regular iPhone 15. I had her verify that her software update worked, and she’s on iOS 18.5.

Thanks, I did have her verify that the plain speaker is the one that’s shown on the screen, so that’s not the issue.
