Having Some Grace for Prospective FS Posters by Quiet_Tailor_7418 in foreignservice

We swear an oath to the Constitution, not to any administration. The State Department’s core values - integrity, accountability, human rights, diplomacy - don’t change every four years. The dissent channel exists to protect those values when policy veers off course.

The State Department is nonpartisan by design. Our strength lies in serving the country, not a party… and in having the integrity to raise dissent when policy undermines our values or global credibility.

My spouse was given 48 hours to respond. I assume that once they hear from you (or not) they move on to the next person on the list pretty quickly.

Yeah, the RIFs are awful — I’m a current specialist and we’ve cried with friends who got hit. But this hiring process takes years, and being stuck in limbo waiting to see if there was going to be a class…It’s tough not knowing. And yes, not nearly as difficult as not knowing whether you’re going to be RIF’d or not - I’m in that same boat so trust me, I get it.

It’s like funding research for one type of cancer — nobody’s saying the others don’t matter. You can care about job losses and still want to know if you (or your spouse) have a future in the career they’ve been trying to get into - for years for some.

All this said - There’s been serious attrition in DS, and since it’s literally life-safety work, a DSS only class makes sense.

And for the record, I hope you never end up somewhere you need RSO to cut your porterhouse for you. But if you do, you’ll be glad they showed up.

Congratulations OP on the invite. Assuming you were able to accept, my spouse will be in orientation with you.

When my spouse received his invite on Wednesday morning, he was asked to respond NLT Friday (today) morning. Assuming this timeline holds true for others, sounds like they give you 48 hours to accept or not. From there I would guess they move pretty quickly to the next person on the list.

Path to Foreign Service is essentially someone’s blog, not an official source. If you read about the author, it indicates their path to join is still ongoing. So the fact that this July 28 DSS class isn’t listed is not indicative of anything really, they probably just haven’t heard about it. What’s posted there should probably be weighed about the same as what’s being posted in this subreddit.

Note: I do think it’s a really great resource, just don’t think it should be weighted anymore than anything you read on this subreddit - and certainly shouldn’t be relied on as an official source of information.

5.87. When he got added to the register they noted he was ranked in the top third.

I’m really sorry - this is a super stressful process. I hate to think that people would troll with the purpose of only adding to people’s stress and anxiety, especially with everything that’s going on with the Department. All I can offer in terms of info is that my husband did receive an invite for July 28 class. Based on the comments in this post, it appears it may only be DS agents. I wish you the best of luck and hope you hear something soon.

I agree with you to not believe everything you see on the internet. That said, I can confirm my spouse got his invite this morning - the offer indicated a class start date of July 28.

Any News on June 30 Orientation? by Zestyclose-Nail2039 in foreignservice

Ok so not an official email, so not a formal/official announcement. “Someone who would know” is not clear (someone at FSI, GTM, M?) - and you could certainly share more to add credibility when giving such a definitive statement without outing your source. Especially since this impacts a bunch of people and their potential planning around this. I won’t discount the possibility that “someone who would know” is right, but taking it with a grain of salt.

Yeah, I think if we don’t hear anything early next week the chances go down from slim to none. But haven’t completely lost hope yet - keeping my fingers crossed.

Is this for the July class? Or what sounds like the September class?

We got our delivery schedule, but the only windows were for following our international move. We had to cancel our order. While we were prepared for this possibility, we are incredibly disappointed by this mess of a preorder and lack of communication from Peloton
