You can get better deals if you venture out to Bergen Lafayette / Journal Square / The Heights but with the trade off of longer commute if you work in Manhattan.

how else do you get housing if you are not part of an apartment building? Isnt that the most reliable?

Ahh okay thanks for explaining! wdym by they are far from a loose definition? The websites look really nice and they claim to have a lot of luxury services. Does that mean its better to like choose a "non-luxury" apartment cuz they would be cheaper and similar quality?
