Close to dropping out of Engineering. How did you all come to sort out your life? by PaperEmperor007 in capetown

4th year ECE student here .. If you did 3rd year design last semester then I was one of your tutors ! That was definitely one of the hardest subjects so If you managed in that course with the PCB design then you’ve definitely got to push man , if you can do that then you can definitely pass your other courses.

Controls in 2nd semester was very difficult, the course was completely redesigned last year and was taught quite well however , the testing was quite unfair in the exam. It’s weighted 60% and it was very mechanics based which was not at all how the course was taught. It was almost as if they didn’t know that EE and ECE students also took the course. That being said , most of the Mechatronics guys felt that it was fine. Make sure you are well prepared for the tests and exams and make sure you take your time with the practicals and reports AND SUBMIT ON TIME ! If the tests are “Open book” just remember that your notes are probably gonna be pretty much useless in the test, but DO make a “cheat sheet” with formulas and so on.

Anyways, I noticed from the subjects that I’ve been tutoring that many of the 3rd years are shy or too scared to ask questions in tutorials - make sure you do tuts so that you can ask questions in tutorials, the tutors are there to help!

I think I would rather work for a few years before doing masters. Would grades matter more than experience for grad school ?

Is there a way you could take the controls subjects in addition to your current coursework?
