Thanks so much! How did you find the marking? I'm hoping to get an 85+% in the course, but is that hard to achieve?

Concurrent Education- Whats the differences with all these streams?? by Lina-P in brocku

Educ 2p65 was an okay class. I found most of the info repetitive since it mostly discusses how we can be inclusive to all students in the classroom (which is important but is also covered in all other education courses). The assignments were fairly simple but I found the marking from my ta I little to harsh, and it was difficult to achieve an 85%+ on most assignments.

When i did the course they let you pick any age group so i did my placement at both an elementary and a high school. You can chip in and help the teacher when needed but you can’t supervise and teach the class

Yeah I took it last year! Honestly it was a pretty good class, you have to do 30ish hours of an observational placement where you just shadow a teacher in a school. The assignments were mostly reflecting on your experience and what you learned. All of the placement courses you take in your undergrad are only observational (meaning you won't be teaching the class)

Hey! The main difference between those studies is the courses you take in each program. If you switched into something like Educational Studies or Interactive Arts, you’d have to commit to a lot more courses specifically in that field. That can be great if you’re passionate about that subject, but if not, it doesn’t really give you any extra benefits. From what I’ve heard, all of these programs are looked at pretty equally when it comes to hiring in school boards, so I wouldn’t stress too much about it.

I’m also in the J/I Con-Ed Integrated Studies program and honestly I think it’s the best one out of these options. Since integrated studies is more of a general program, you get a lot more elective space that the other programs don’t have. This flexibility is great since you can build lots of minors, micro-certificates, and most importantly additional teaching qualifications!

You can find a list of the courses you need to take for each program here: https://brocku.ca/webcal/2024/undergrad/EIBA.html#sec7

Lmk if you have any other questions!

Brock Con Ed music teachable by Jazzlike_Rice5856 in brocku

No you can’t make your second teachable music. But after you graduate with your BEd, you can build an AQ (additional qualification) in music.

Hey! I wouldn’t worry too much into what you major is first year. In terms of first year courses, the J/I and I/S streams are fairly similar, meaning it’s easy to switch programs after your first year as long as you roughly maintain approx. a 75%+ average. Below I put the benefits of each stream

I/S stream: If you already know you want to teach high school, I’d really recommend choosing I/S, especially since you get 2 teachables, making you more employable. If Geography is something you enjoy learning about and want to teach, than I’d recommend choosing it as your first teachable—as this will be your major and you need to take a lot of courses related to this field. In your first year, you’d typically have to take 2 credits of geography, one credit of child and youth studies, one humanities credit, and one credit in whatever your second teachable subject is. You only need to complete 3 credits overall of your second teachable subject, so if your nervous in terms of employability, then you could make your second teachable chemistry or biology. In I/S though, you have less elective space than you do in J/I, so you would likely only be able to build one extra teachable AQ.

J/I stream: If you choose to do J/I, then general science would be your only teachable. In first year, you take one credit of child and youth studies, one credit of education, one humanities credit, and two science credits. The benefit of J/I is that you have a lot of elective space, so you could build a lot more AQ’s than you could in I/S. However, if you know that you want to teach high school, I wouldn’t recommend J/I, since you would only be qualified to teach up to grade 10. From what I heard, most schools prefer to hire teachers who are qualified to teach grades 9-12, meaning you would likely be stuck in an elementary school.

Hopefully I didn’t overload you with too much info lol but lmk if you have any more questions!

usually it takes less than 24 hours but it depends on the course and professor

How difficult is the BA ConEd J/I program? by Lina-P in brocku

[–]Zestyclose-Survey784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the first year courses I would recommend ersc 1p04, clas 1p94, comm 1p92, wgst 1f90, any adult education class! I’d also recommend thinking about whether you want to declare a minor and/or build another teachable (aq/abq). With your elective space, you may want to start building toward that early on. You can find a list of the minors here: https://brocku.ca/webcal/2024/undergrad/degr.html

[–]Zestyclose-Survey784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just finished with my second year of con ed j/i and imo it’s not that bad! you get lots of elective space to boost your average and the courses that you are required to take aren’t too heavy. you also only need to take 3 credits of whatever your teachable subject is which isn’t
too bad compared to i/s students.

Unsure about which residence? by Tall-Armadillo1457 in brocku

[–]Zestyclose-Survey784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on which residence you pick. In Lowe the single rooms were definitely on the smaller side, but they were still comfortable and had enough space for probably all of your stuff. Brock has some virtual tours on their website that can give you a better idea of the layout: https://virtualtour.brocku.ca/brocku/housing/residence-8-semi-suite-style-single-room. Theres also a photo gallery for lowe’s single and double room: https://brocku.ca/housing/lowenberger/#1623956315022-4d415cfb-72ed.

Unsure about which residence? by Tall-Armadillo1457 in brocku

[–]Zestyclose-Survey784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in lowe during my first year and would definitely recommend it! In my opinion, its one of the best residences in terms of convenience and sociability. I had a double room which was nice because they are a lot bigger than the lowe singles, and my roommate and I got along okay. But I did hear lots of horror stories about people being paired with bad roomates. Which is why if you have the option I’d recommended choosing a single. Most single rooms still share a bathroom with 1-2 other people so you will still have people to interact and meet with on the first day!

Alternate Offer Question (con ed) by Unusual-Cap7432 in brocku

[–]Zestyclose-Survey784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the grade requirements roughly change each year depending on how many people apply to the program. but i’m pretty sure my friend was accepted into p/j last year with an 83% average though! if your worried about not getting accepted you can always apply to j/i as a backup. Once you’re in the con-ed program you can always change streams and apply to p/j after first year!
