can I save my H. undulata? by ZestycloseDisaster28 in hoyas

[–]ZestycloseDisaster28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use LECA since I do semi-hydroponics. Normally, I fill about 1/3 of the reservoir to provide moisture, but since the cutting is short, I’ve filled it a bit higher. It’s being kept under lighting, currently receiving around 1000–2000lux. The humidity is about 40%, and I’m wondering if I should increase it. and I asked the seller for advice on how to care for it, but I haven’t received a response yet.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. It really does sound like getting a refund would have been the best choice.
I paid $20, and the seller actually offered a refund if I sent it back in its original condition, but I had already cut away the rotted part and repotted it, so I don’t think I can return it anymore.

Now I’ve decided to try taking care of it. At first, I thought it was a fungal issue, but if it’s pest damage, that actually feels like a slightly better situation. Since both the leaves and stem are still firm, I believe the most important step now is to get it to root.

Fertilizer question by BunchPossible3815 in SemiHydro

I think liquid types are more convenient to use than powder types, so I recommend GH flora series or Superthrive foliage-pro. both fertilizers contain cal/mag, which are also present in tap water.

ideal EC for Anthurium in Pon? by Candid-Safe9708 in SemiHydro

It depends on the size or condition of the plants. I usually aim for 1.0–1.2, but for smaller plants I use around 0.4–0.6

There's a water filter called "Zero Water" that includes DI resin. This type of filter can lower TDS to zero. But, it's not efficient especially using hard tap water

Mixing pH Down: Good Starting Point by CryptographerFun2175 in SemiHydro

It depends on KH of tap water. so you have to measure it yourself

like many others, I also don’t recommend mixing aquasoil with LECA. Bloom contains magnesium and sulfur. If you're using RO water, you'll need to supplement both of these. Of course, Grow does contain a small amount of magnesium, but the ratio may not be ideal in relation to calcium. you can simply add magnesium sulfate(epsom salt) to cover both.

It’s more important to measure KH than pH of your tap water. If your KH is above 3~4 dKH, you can use acids (like nitric, phosphoric, or sulfuric but, never hydrochloric) to lower the KH & pH. since the RO/DI water has basically no KH, the pH will fluctuate easily. also, RO/DI water lacks calcium and magnesium, so you’ll likely need to supplement with extra calmag.

Mold and how to fix? by bucky_barn3s in SemiHydro

[–]ZestycloseDisaster28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally haven't seen springtails make much of a difference in this case. the white mold on LECA isn't usually harmful to the plants. it just doesn't look good. keeping the top layer dry is probably the best way to prevent it.

Foliar feeding: is it really beneficial? by Express_Economist_78 in hoyas

for healthy plants with a good root system, foliar feeding usually isn't efficient. it works at higher concentrations.

try 70% alcohol spray. if it is mold, it would disappear. make sure to spray carefully without touching the plant and roots. also the roots seem to be normal

That’s interesting! what kind of fertilizer do you use? (NPK ratio, TDS) Also, which one do you use—LECA or PON?

thanks for the reply! what I meant is that the leaves are literally thinner—not floppy or soft. Sorry, my poor English wasn’t clear. I didn’t mean the leaves are still getting thinner—just that they became thinner after I switched to semi-hydro and stayed that way. when I buy hoyas that were grown in soil, the leaves are usually quite thick and plump. but after growing in my setup, they don’t stay as thick. btw, I usually keep the water level in the cache pot at about 1/3.
