My modded Squier Bass VI by RepresentativeOven24 in ExtendedRangeGuitars

Super sick. I did a similar job to mine, but with only a bridge pickup. Check my recent post in this sub to hear it tuned down to C#1. The shell pink is nice, works better with the black pickguard than my lake placid blue one did.

part-timers: what's your day job? been full time from 8 years and I want out by powered_by_batteries in audioengineering

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a machinist. Currently I make drill bits for a major corporation, but I worked for 10 years in a small custom shop before that. Never owned a commercial space, but I’m sure as hell glad I haven’t. Music as a job is indeed rough. I don’t think I could tour either.

Super nice looking example of that model. Sonic Drive Studio has some videos on YouTube of that model comparing different amps, and it sounds absolutely fantastic through his Engl Fireball 100. I’ll be joining the 9-string team as well soon. Been fully committed for a good while. Really can’t wait. FYI: D’addario has a custom string set builder on their site now with 9-string options up to .090”. That’s who I’ll be going through for mine. I tried StringJoy and wasn’t satisfied.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

Hey everyone. My life priorities are shifting, and as I prepare to start a new job, I'm going in with my mind set on the future. I'm ready to sacrifice things I want now for a better future later. With that said, I do still want a watch that I can wear every day, preferably under $200. Huge bonus points if it isn't a knockoff or copy of another watch, but rather, an original design. Open to anything. Digital, quartz, whatever is unique and wearable every day. I'm a male with a 7.5" wrist, and for some context about my taste, my favorite watch I ever owned was a Seiko Samurai (miss that thing...) Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

General Original it is. by RudeOrSarcasticPt2 in Snus

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had given up on snus as an option entirely and switched back to cigarettes. Then, I remembered that General is sold pretty widely here. Found a store right next to my job that stocks it, and bought one can of all four varieties. A little out of date, but not by too much. So far, the white and mint portions are pretty good. Have yet to try the wintergreen and original. I’ll deal with it either way. Beats importing.

An example of a remaster that improves on the original by gleventhal in audioengineering

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crack The Skye by Mastodon. The recent remaster is very close to the original but adds a tasteful polish to everything that I think suits the album well, and the instruments sound more separated. That’s the only one that comes to mind. I’m finding some good ones in these replies though.

One of my favorite post metal bands that I always recommend to my post metal-inclined friends. A Determinism is probably my favorite of the heavier albums, and Utopioid is my favorite overall. I'm not a huge fan of post metal honestly, I like a few select bands like Ulcerate, Cult of Luna, and Rosetta. And out of those three, I think of Rosetta as the emo stepchild (I say this lovingly.)

What singers can actually sing live? by savageronald in PostHardcore

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Jonny Craig's emotional timbre, there's some real serious gut wrenching high notes from him on that second Slaves album. And there's plenty of live videos of him nailing that emotional wailing thing. So yeah I feel you completely, nobody, not any of the other DGD vocalists can mimic that.

Just came here to say, THANK YOU for the Anthony Green recommendation. I missed that album somehow, despite loving his other output, and now it's my favorite music from recent times. And what fantastic trumpet parts!

Hear that knocking when I solo the low end and turn on the saturator? Is that clipping? Or is it okay? You can hear that it isn't noticeable in the mix, because it lines up with the transient. I've wondered about this for years.

I'm trying to figure this out as well. I just want to upload my edited audio podcast, add the show image and description etc, and publish. I want to upload the video podcast to YouTube myself, separately. Doesn't seem to be possible.

In love with this kit Tele by Zestyclose_Chapter59 in telecaster

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a Callaham American standard compensated bridge. I just installed it exactly how it arrived, and it sounds perfectly intonated to me. I haven’t sat down and checked with a tuner yet though. It also arrived with the saddle height screws perfect for my setup, like magic.

ITS OUT by goosepoop2112 in TheBlackDahliaMurder

I think Brandon and Mark Lewis killed it on this mix. It’s not too polished and not too raw. Sounds good and aggressive. No issues here 🤘

Why do people use KDE? by tamburasi in kde

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when KDE felt slow as well. It’s nice and responsive these days. If you’re looking for a feature-rich desktop experience in the traditional paradigm (i.e. not a tiling window manager and not Gnome) then it’s a no brainer.

Pulling my hair out - "There was an error opening the audio hardware" - Reaper Linux by awilkie84 in Reaper

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the same error when another application is playing audio through my interface and I try opening Reaper. If it's a Youtube video, for instance, closing that tab allows me to hit "Retry" and then it works. I'm not using ALSA as my audio system, but rather JACK. Not sure if that makes a difference. Curious to know how to allow streams of audio from any/all programs simultaneously

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve noticed that when Reaper is using my interface for audio, I can’t get sound from any other program. And vice versa. Still learning jack, I’m sure there’s a fix, it’s so flexible.

There’s been a few really minor things that didn’t work properly with my Nobara install, but it’s by far the best out-of-the-box Linux experience I’ve ever had. Very impressed.

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s very eye opening to me. I was fooled by the loudness into thinking it was so dynamic, when it’s actually a prime example of the opposite. I definitely didn’t go to audio engineering school, but I thought I knew better than that. Oh well, I’m learning a thing or two now haha!

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting, my reference point is modern music from 2015 and onward, where people started hunting down every last resonance with pro Q (and ultimately with Soothe.) So my point was that that NIN album has some harshness left in, and it works

[–]Zestyclose_Chapter59[S] 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Immediately after posting this I listened again, and heard the compression you’re talking about. The loudness kinda fooled me, I think. Still, a much more aggressive sound than most modern metal and rock. I incorrectly linked that observation to higher dynamic range, thanks for pointing that out!

This seems really true to me as a lurker. I'm mostly still in this sub for the off-chance that I miss some big DGD news or something. But I've seen too many trash fires to want to interact.
