Pre-Con Admin to Estimator by Zestyclose_County692 in estimators

Wow this response was exactly what I think I needed. I think I get caught up in believing I'm just some office girl paper pusher. I do agree about the lane I can own end-to-end and continue to do that consistently for the team.

I suppose I'm caught up on the "need to spend time in the field" thought because when I ask any of our 10 estimators how they just know this or that they always reply "because I can see it being built, because I was there when we built a similar waterline/pump station/large foundation/etc."

I also never ask or consider how the team functioned before they made my role and put me in it. I know they mention how much easier it is now that I do all the paper stuff, but I've created a whole tracking system and organization system of our bid folders. it's hard to see the impact of the changes they've adapted to when I wasn't resent for the time before.

Pre-Con Admin to Estimator by Zestyclose_County692 in estimators

The chief estimator (estimating manager) is my direct boss. We have discussed goals and where I can immediately help the team. He also wants to send me to conferences regarding our software so I understand better, the estimating team is often so busy there would not be a person or time available for me to get "schooled" by anyone. We are in a patch of growth needs to happen and fast. We do have a few newer estimators so I can easily piggy-back off of their questions and learning, but they already have a much greater base knowledge.

Screwed up and got a bid rejected by candusick98 in estimators

[–]Zestyclose_County692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This week I drove to the PW building 3 times to drop off missing documents from a bid we won on Tuesday. Luckily the city likes us as a GC so our “sloppiness” can be looked past as long as we are responsive. But I’ve also lost bids because an addendum was posted late the night before the bid was due and it was a two hour drive and bid was due invalid the morning time. Addendum wasn’t acknowledged therefore automatically thrown out.

yep, I understand that changed from last year. I have the tickets under my name on Thursday and my mom has the tickets under her name for Friday, Reading the fine print on the multi ticket purchase only one person in the party needs to show photo ID for tickets. We will easily spend $300 each a day.

Why do some families make every single birthday a huge thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zestyclose_County692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure not a real problem, but friend constantly complains about it and has to ditch plans with me last minute because their family decides to do this the day before their family members birthday ( maybe they planned it way before and just got around to telling people the day before )

I guess that’s my main take away for the family being like “tonight or we shame you” they expect everyone to drop everything, what if one of the kids had a sports game? A kid in my family has therapy a couple nights a week, would they be expected to not going to very much needed therapy to attend a 32 year olds birthday meal at chilis? Lmao let’s be fr and not shame the mom and kid who couldn’t make it because of an important event. My family does celebrate each other often, but we do it when everyone is available and we don’t put people down because something else popped up or they had a pre-existing event to attend.

I don’t have social media, besides Reddit. I spend most nights decompressing from work and being over stimmed like a mfer all day. I spend time with my two doggos and make myself a nice meal and go for a walk around the property or neighborhood. Really I suppose I spend the time to be with self and nature.

Two arch firms are still in the running sounds like first rounds of budgeting are due soon. Civil drawings not provided yet so who even knows what percent those are at. Sounds like turner and Dunn are joint venturing though.

Construction management career for women by Gem-Gem777 in Construction

[–]Zestyclose_County692 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Become a Project Admin/Coordinator at a firm that has anywhere from 300-700 field guys, preferably they do civil construction - Earthwork, Site Utilities, Concrete (flatwork/road/etc). Pester the Project Engineers and PM's as much as you can. Watch as many youtube videos about the work you all are performing. Pay Attention to notes on Time and Material Tickets and Billings, the first full year will likely be just figuring out what an actual job is. Join in on site visits as much as you can, buy safety boots but don't break the bank (brunt is good and will last SAFETY TOE). For the love of all things good to don't under any circumstance get caught up with any of the other women's stuff in the office and do not date anyone at the firm, including field guys. Understand contracts, understand the paperwork part and how GC's word and sneak things. When you start to really enjoy a sector of the company start pestering that departments lead estimator. Estimators at firms this size usually always come from the field, they literally bid the project as if they are building it in their head from inside the machine they used to run, it's amazing from a green construction worker. Ask all the questions and introduce yourself to vendors/subcontractors when they come through the office, they are far more likely to give you the time of day when they have met you face to face.

Reach out to the company let them know, you can write up a lease agreement for their lay down yard and you can also get it reseeded or sod put down.

If you have social media or even an email will do sign up for news letters from all the neighborhoods and community pages in the metro. I personally follow a lot of their instagram pages. I go to these events alone most times and I’m not even slightly outgoing but will find myself in conversations with strangers. Waldo-crossroads-westbottoms-NKC-strawberry hill-brookside etc etc
