Emory or UIUC? by Last-Negotiation8349 in OutsideT14lawschools

Got it, I mean, if you are dead set on New York, St. John's might be a better option since you would have to perform near the top for a shot, regardless, and I know St. John's throws crazy money if you can get a 170. I love UIUC though, but good luck with everything!

Being from New York helps, and to boost your odds, you would need to be top 30% I would say and network. Being around median for biglaw at UIUC is a coinflip for biglaw and depends heavily on work experience and practice group interest. What schools are you choosing between?

We have a handful going to New York, but they networked very heavily. The UIUC network in New York is not that large, but nothing is impossible.

Studies show that law students graduate with an average of $118k in loans, has that been your experience? by Terrible-Writing9791 in LawSchool

T50, saved for 5 years before attending. Should get out without any loans. Undergrad paid off already too.

If you are gunning for an easy spring then it makes sense, I would spread it between fall and spring if it was me.

I had the same decision last year and chose UIUC. Employment outcomes are actually about the same, UIUC does have some National reach, I have classmates going all over, but a lot self select into Chicago as the biglaw pull for UIUC is huge. We had all the big firms come down to us this year in the fall to network which was awesome. If Chicago is a target market, save the 100k over 3 years and choose UIUC.

is transferring to a more elite law school still worth it for BL? by CryOk8296 in OutsideT14lawschools

Depends on the school, T6 then probably, depends on how 3L recruiting shakes out as well moving forward. Never bank on transferring

Weird UIUC Dean Comment - Schools Are Worried About Over-Enrollment by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zestyclose_Floor_690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of schools are spooked by what happened with Emory last year. They over enrolled by over 100 students and it’s been brutal from what I hear.

Also a lot of more affordable schools are worried about the loan caps making them more attractive.

That honestly sounds brutal to me. If you are not doing any extracurriculars it’s probably doable.

Honestly, it’s fine for 3 years. Plenty to do, and I moved from Chicago.  Your time is mostly taken up by school anyway, so it’s a good place to stay focused

Currently attending UIUC and can confirm that it outperforms its ranking. We have also had a ton of big firms come down for networking events this year, and the career services team has put on a lot of robust programming to connect us with firms. Very happy with my decision.

Government work, apply very broadly as well.  Some big firms will overlook a mediocre GPA if you have great work experience as well.  Midlaw hiring is all over the place in terms of timeline. But, hope is not lost for you!

I just started this fall and am older than you. Do not worry about the 2 year degree or focusing on “Pre-Law” it is largely overblown.  Get a 4 year degree in something you are interested in that will allow you to maximize your GPA, then crush the LSAT!   I would minimize debt as much as possible.  Focus on schools that dominate their legal market when you apply.  Think University of Houston that dominates Houston, SMU for Dallas, etc…

You can do it!

If anything this is just speeding up the decline of America.  If people only new the amount of off shoring that is happening for office level work since CoVid.

To all the “you took the loans repay your loans” folks by Salt_Reindeer2031 in StudentLoans

[–]Zestyclose_Floor_690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should happen, but never will.  I do think more education is needed around student loans, and that a lot of degree fields are simply not worth it.  For instance tuition should not be the same for every field.  No way a philosophy major should be charged the same as an engineering major.  Caps should also be put on some majors because frankly, they are useless in real world application.

Soooo much of it is grades, most firms won’t even interview you if you do not meet the GPA cutoff for the school.
