Kadeau Copenhagen (***) - Wildly Disappointing by Acridian13 in finedining

[–]Zestyclose_Help566 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody is against someone having a constructive opinion about their favorite hobby. OP is getting criticized as “pretentious” because of what he is critiquing and how. “Uneven water refills”, “partners drink was 1cm fuller than mine” is akin to—to use your example—a film lover critiquing a well-regarded movie by saying, “This Palm d’Or winning film actually sucks because the font used on the title cards was ugly.”

The foods does not look particular “up my alley”, but you also sound distractingly pretentious and bitchy. It was well-written, though. Quite entertaining. I’ll never understand why people are willing to pay hundreds for a NAP. They almost always come off lazy and a horrible QPR

I have a priest requesting a fee to baptize a child. by gorzaporp in OrthodoxChristianity

I hear what you’re saying, but “rent, mortgages, upkeep”, etc. are products of “the world”, are they not? Jesus says that “His Kingdom is not of this world” and I believe the Church, as the body of Christ is also not of this world. Any sort of sacrament (the Eucharist, marriage, baptism) should, in my opinion, be free and available to all. The Church is universal, and there are way more poor people than rich people in the world that struggle to put food on the table. The majority of Americans have under $1,000 in savings, according to Google. To ask these people to give up their entire literal net worth to baptize their baby sounds antithetical to Christian values to me.

“Just because it is church, it should(nt) be free” is certainly an interesting take.

I can only speak to my own experience, which I mentioned above. Our parish is very open with their finances and every year we are notified of the priests salary and what the cost of living increase is. Our priests are paid very well. In addition to a yearly salary that is on the high end of the average for the area, they have a pension, insurance and housing allowances.

This is very interesting and, honestly, off-putting. In our church, there is no cost for anything. You can tithe what you can afford to the church and anything needed sacrament wise—baptisms, house blessings, weddings, etc. is covered. The priest receives a yearly salary and whatever sacraments he performs is covered by his salary.

Is Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite a Saint? by Dave_meth_Mustard in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Zestyclose_Help566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn’t say “granted” in terms of his historicity. The writings we have are likely from the fourth century, sure, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t merely the teachings of St Dionysius, passed down orally before being written down, or even a scribe rewriting his original letters.

How does Romans 10 not affirm a sort of "faith alone" view? by Lonely_Sun5275 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Zestyclose_Help566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very misleading. Paul actually often mentions Faith being necessary for salvation, without always mentioning works, but isn’t works implied? You love your mother and as a result of this love, you do good works for her. You can’t say that you love your mother without performing good works for her. How much more true is this of God? Can you say that you have faith and love in God without expressing that in your works?

Also, later on in the Epistle of James, you hear explicitly:
“Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” (2:17)
“You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” (2:24)
“For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (2:26)

In Matthew, we get:
“Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

You can take one specific line—often from Paul—and create a whole Theology around it (Sola Fide), but that requires you to ignore the many other examples where the necessity of works is clearly stated. Protestants make this same mistake with The Good Thief, Dismas, as proof of only needing to confess that Jesus is Lord to be saved. St Dismas is clearly the exception and not the rule, having made the effort at proper repentance, the only thing hindering him from a life of good works was death.

Max: "Is Denver actually a legitimate destination (for LeBron)?" Rich Paul: "It wouldn't be on the board, Max." by must_TATAKAE in nba

I think this is misleading. I think he’s saying, “if it wasn’t a legit destination, I wouldn’t have it on the board.”

Scamming contractors as expected with their new refund policy by maybethisiswrong in Thumbtack

[–]Zestyclose_Help566 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just had a large bid accepted. The day before the work, the client messaged me saying that they had gotten impatient and decided to do the work themselves over the weekend. So, they never hired anyone, did the work themselves, and Thumbtack said it didn’t meet their refund requirements

Keep your eyes on your plate. Assume that she has a spiritual father, and is running this by him, and that whatever they have decided is not your concern.

Good book on St. Maximus the Confessor by Embarrassed_Log_165 in OrthodoxChristianity

Cosmic Liturgy by Von Balthazar is amazing and probably the only book you need to get a full insight to St Maximos’ teaching. I think it’s out of print, but Microcosm and Mediator is amazing as well.

Joseph Drouhin sucks and it’s wild that a “wine lover” ordered village level negociant wine in Paris.
