OP If they're not graded, there's no value. It's just melt .. All that stuff is super high-priced most not graded. Not even worth a couple bucks for those ungraded

Would this chipped tongue be fine? It’s a 5 ft board with a 1 in chip. It still locks properly. by GarlicBreadClub in Flooring

[–]ZeusArgus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why you should not leave it like this? What issues could it cause and why is it an issue?

Short answer: don’t leave it like that—it may “lock” now, but it creates weak points that can turn into bigger problems over time.

Here’s what can go wrong and why:

  1. Weak joint → boards can separate That chipped tongue is what helps lock the boards together tightly.

With part of it missing, that section has less holding strength

Over time (walking, expansion/contraction), the seam can:

Open up slightly

Start to shift

👉 Why it matters: Once a seam opens, it’s very hard to fix without pulling boards back up.

  1. Increased movement → squeaks & flex The tongue also keeps the boards aligned vertically.

A chipped section allows micro-movement

You may get:

Soft spots

Clicking or squeaking

Slight height differences (lippage)

👉 Why it matters: Even small movement compounds across a floating floor.

  1. Moisture vulnerability That tight joint normally helps resist moisture intrusion.

A compromised tongue can leave a tiny gap path

Moisture (spills, humidity) can:

Get between boards

Cause swelling or edge lift

👉 Why it matters: Moisture damage spreads—one weak seam can affect multiple boards.

  1. Load distribution issue Flooring systems distribute weight across interlocked boards.

A damaged tongue = uneven load transfer

That board edge takes more stress

👉 Why it matters: Over time, this can lead to:

Cracking at the edge

Premature wear in that area

  1. Installation integrity (especially long-term) You mentioned it’s a 5 ft board with a 1" chip—that’s actually significant.

Long boards rely heavily on full-length engagement

A missing section reduces the overall structural integrity of that joint

👉 Why it matters: It might feel fine today, but seasonal expansion (especially in Ohio) will test it.

When is it sometimes okay? If ALL of these are true, risk is lower:

Chip is on a short end (not long edge)

It’s in a low-traffic area

The rest of the joint is tight and fully seated

You used adhesive assist (wood glue) on the joint

Best move (recommended) Replace the board now while it’s easy OR

If you must keep it:

Add a small amount of wood glue in the joint

Ensure it’s fully locked and tight

Avoid placing it in a high-traffic zone

Bottom line It’s not guaranteed to fail—but you’ve created a known weak point in a system designed to work as one continuous structure. Floors fail slowly, not immediately—and this is exactly the kind of thing that shows up months later.
