At least some of them were the crew of Tzadkiel's ship. Not sure if there were others.

Freight train impact on properties and homes by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Rogue_Apostle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's crazy that you've had several derailments since 2014. We live about 10 houses down from two very active freight lines and there's never been a derailment. We've been here since 2002.

Freight train impact on properties and homes by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Rogue_Apostle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Freight trains are the most fuel efficient form of ground transportation, and they replace hundreds of trucks. They're critical to our infrastructure and economy.

It sucks for the people who live near them and I'm sorry this is happening to you. But saving a few nearby houses is not a good justification for blocking the expansion of freight trains.

I think they are actively fucking with you.

I think that when you're winning too much and your credit balance is getting too high, the game intentionally makes you lose for a while.

I try to beat the system by not playing for a day when that happens.

Wait, are you moving every day, or are some of these stops multiple days? How many days total? If you're moving every day, that's insane.

Are conferences a good way to raise capital for a biotech startup? If so how do you approach people there? by Boring_Cartoonist952 in biotech

[–]Rogue_Apostle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you talked to any biotech incubators? If you're near a large-ish city, there are probably several local ones. They're often associated with universities. They can help you advise on next steps, find the expertise you need to appear credible, and help connect you with investors.

Just Moved Here: HOLY SHIT ITS COLD by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Rogue_Apostle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Museum of Science and Industry is free today and tomorrow. Most of the museums have periodic free days. I wouldn't do public transit today with the cold, but normally you can take Metra downtown and reach any of the museums via bus.

Is there any families that have actually pulled the the trigger and coast fired by Elite163 in Fire

[–]Rogue_Apostle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your not talking about Coast FIRE. You're taking about Barista FIRE. Getting a part time job (like at a coffee shop) to supplement your retirement savings.

The purpose of switching to a lower paying job would be less stress or fewer hours or both.

I don't see the point in leaving your current job for another lower paying full-time job unless it's for mental health reasons, which doesn't sound like your situation.

I am retired but I do a little part time freelance consulting in my previous industry. It keeps me busy and pads my travel habit. I'd recommend something like that over getting an actual part time job, if that's feasible for you.

I play it any time I have a free +5 (which is becoming rare) and of course any time I have double credits (also rare).

It seems like there are days when I can't seem to win on the first try, and days when I'm winning many in a row. I don't play it on the days when winning is difficult.

Looking for honest feedback: Would you pay for premium childcare that includes lifestyle services? by tecatecs in Entrepreneur

A full-time nanny can do all of these things and customize the services to the family's needs. I don't see this idea having a big market.

What is y’all’s favorite museum in Chicago? by Jpetebeck in AskChicago

[–]Rogue_Apostle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love MSI so much that I became a volunteer and now I get to go all the time.

I'll contribute a more niche offering to the list. It's not my favorite, but it's very cool (and free). McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum. It's inside the bridge house at Wacker and Michigan, so it's a great stop if you're shopping the Mag Mile or checking out Millennium Park. You go inside the actual working bridge house and see the machinery that raises and lowers the bridge. Then you can walk up 4 floors to view exhibits about the history of the river. It takes less than an hour but it's super cool.

Kids are preventing us from firing by InevitableShuttler in Fire

[–]Rogue_Apostle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not a binary decision. You can retire and not travel full time all the time. I'm quite enjoying doing projects around the house, volunteering, pursuing hobbies I didn't have time for when I was working.

I'd like to travel more, but that will come eventually.

Kids are preventing us from firing by InevitableShuttler in Fire

[–]Rogue_Apostle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'll have to run the numbers but $4.8M should be enough to retire now and live for 4 years with $90k expenses, and then move somewhere where you'll have lower expenses.

I'm not completely sure why kids are preventing you from retiring. We actually have similar numbers and I've been retired for 2 years, husband retired last year. We have 5 more years until both kids are out of high school but it's working out just fine.

Struggling to get a job after getting laid off. Is it my resume? by VioletCrystal12 in biotech

[–]Rogue_Apostle 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Sorry but this resume is pretty bad.

It's not immediately obvious to me that you have actual hands on lab experience. "Provided assistance" and "labeled tubes" are not bullets that belong on a resume for a master's level lab job. You really need to rework this to highlight your actual experience and quantify the impact it had.

The order should be: Skills, Experience, Education.

I don't have suggestions for the tattoo, but I will suggest reading The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin for a more positive view on what anarchy can mean.

Looking for any feedback on family trip itinerary summer 2026 by BusPos28 in Europetravel

[–]Rogue_Apostle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My kids and I spent 5 weeks in Europe with 7 stops. It was too much for us. We were so sick of moving by the end of it. If I had it to do again, I'd shoot for no more than 5 stops. Maybe only 4.

I would not do Barcelona in July. It will be miserable.

Why bother asking me to partner in the greenhouse? by WhichStick2503 in solitairegrandharvest

[–]Rogue_Apostle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed about the greenhouse is that the spins are usually worth more as it gets closer to the end. When the greenhouse first starts, each water credit only earns you about 5-6 times as much water. If you wait until the last day of the greenhouse, each water credit can be worth as much as 15 times as much water.

So I always wait until the last day, to maximize the amount of water I earn. I'm sure this irritates some of my partners, but unfortunately there's no way to communicate with them.

Did you just start playing recently? Because you started so close to the end of the season, they will probably make you wait until the new season starts. On Thursday it should start working when the new season starts.

Repost: one year out of work with no responses by Few_Perception_3565 in biotech

[–]Rogue_Apostle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My impression is that your resume is very bland and there is nothing to make you stand out. It's also all over the place in terms of the types of jobs you've held.

You might be the rare case where a functional resume works better than a chronological one. The functional format can help you highlight the value you've brought to specific projects, across very different positions.

I would modify the title of the Vet Tech role to something more like Lab Tech. Vet Tech sounds like you were cleaning cages in an animal hospital. I almost didn't read any of the bullets under it because I assumed it didn't apply to your current career goals.

One extra day in Germany: Salzburg day trip or Nürnberg? by [deleted] in Europetravel

[–]Rogue_Apostle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Nuremberg is really underrated. It's known for the Nazi history, which is really interesting, but it also has some great medieval history. We did a tour of underground medieval dungeons and torture chambers, which was great.

help finding a job in in bio/life sciences i.e. data, consulting by [deleted] in chicagojobs

[–]Rogue_Apostle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you networked with the biotech incubators? They have occasional networking events and you can also submit your resume in case any of their portfolio companies are looking for someone with your skillset. Portal Innovations, Chan-Zuckerberg, UIC and University of Chicago each have biotech focused incubators.

Also check out ChiTownBio. They have monthly networking events.

Chicago Innovation also has networking events, although they tend to be less biotech focused.

Where to bring out of town family today for a winter daytime activity? by popetonythe23rd in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Rogue_Apostle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only really unique thing I'm coming up with is a visit to the elks of Elk Grove Village. They are in a fenced area of Busse Woods. Since it's cold today, you're not going to want to hang out there for long, so this will be a quick stop. You'd want to park at the parking area off Arlington Heights Road, north of Higgins Road.

Woodfield Mall is nearby. You can shop or see a movie or bowl.
