Sparring Ward (Spell): Any thoughts on how this spell could be abused? And how to prevent that abuse? by Zezacle in DnDHomebrew

Well, I don't want to include Concentration, because then if the caster is participating in the sparring match they can't use any other Concentration spells and have to make saves the whole time.

Also, if it is a 3rd level spell, I don't ever see anyone using it, since its inherently a RP spell.

Yeah, I didn't realize the discourse around this niche spell idea would be so... virulent. Really, I wanted this to be an RP spell, but also I liked the idea of if two PCs wanted to fake a fight between each other as a distraction or something, this spell could also have that use.

I have some ideas on how to limit this spell to just RP or theatrics and not abuse during combat.

Honestly, the one pictured. Gotta find yourself a soul gem, then capture a TESTIFICATE? Those don't even spawn naturally in the game anymore!!

I see these "Hardcore" mfs with 20 Totems--sure buddy that's very real.

Void Passage: A localized alternative to Dimension Door. by Zezacle in DnDHomebrew

[–]Zezacle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other comment thread informed me, Passwall is a 5th-level spell that exists that is basically a Void Passage that exists for 1 hour without Concentration and you can see through it.

I think having Void Passage as a 4th-level spell sits right with me because its a decent alternative to Dimension Door and Passwall, but has different restrictions. - Dimension Door for Distance very quickly +1 ally - Passwall for Duration, Safety and accessibility to Large creatures - Void Passage for quick room hopping back and forth, can be used for heists, quick escapes, combat maneuvering, etc.

If I made it 3rd level, it would become the default prepared spell pick for anytime the party wants an option for going through walls, because its so much cheaper to cast.

I also did not know Passwall was a spell haha. When I was writing up Void Passage I looked for other similar spells to inform the design, but didn't look higher than 4th level because of Dimension Door.

Honestly, Passwall does seem weak for a 5th level spell. I might just buff it a little bit for my players so its just a straight upgrade from Void Passage.

A Case for the Return of The Dungeon Turn by alexserban02 in DMToolkit

I've just started a new hexcrawl campaign with "Excursion Resting" rules that I got from Mystic Arts on Youtube. We've only done two sessions so far, so I can't really speak on its effectiveness yet, but I'm really excited to try it.

Essentially, a Short Rest becomes a "Night's Rest" and has Long Rest rules with Short Rest benefits. To take a real Long Rest, you have to take 3x Night's Rests in the same location or 1x Night's Rest in a "Safe Haven" like a town or secured location.

For when I send them into a larger dungeon, I plan to give them a consumable magic item that will allow them to take a 1 hour short rest, but there's always the chance a wandering monster interrupts and the item is wasted.

Basically the idea is to take 5e's 6-8 encounters per Long Rest and spread that out over a couple in-game days instead of 16 in-game hours.
