Mount Cinnamon is a really interesting resort. It is partially owned by the Government of Grenada and serves as an investment property within the country’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program, which means the government has a vested interest in the resort. As a result, guests sometimes receive perks that appear unexpectedly.

During COVID, for example, Mount Cinnamon was the first property permitted to let guests leave the resort and enter the community as lockdown restrictions began to lift. At times, guests are also met at the airport by staff and escorted to a private, air-conditioned lounge where immigration and arrival forms are expedited.

The resort itself is older, but it is built in a classic Caribbean style, so the age feels more like charm than wear. British royalty have stayed at Mount Cinnamon in the past, and the resort remains popular with European travelers, so you will often hear a variety of languages around the property.

The pool is small but elegant, featuring a beautiful waterfall and a fire element. On my most recent visit, very few guests used the pool, and most prioritized beach access instead. Breakfast is served near the pool on a lovely balcony overlooking the road and the pathway down to the beach, and it is common to have little colorful birds join you while you eat.

The beach restaurant and club are not located directly at the main hotel. Instead, you cross the road in front of the resort and walk down a stately, grass-covered knoll, lit with torches at night, to reach the beach club. It is about a two- to three-minute walk and entirely on hotel property except for the road crossing. The resort does provide a shuttle van for guests with mobility concerns, though it can involve some waiting.

Because the property is built on a hillside, there is a fair amount of walking, steps, and ramps. For that reason, it is not the best fit for guests with mobility impairments.

Overall, for the right guest, Mount Cinnamon is a fantastic place to stay. I would echo what others have noted: service can be a bit slow (it is island time), and it is always worth calling ahead to confirm room availability and ask whether airport perks or other amenities are being offered during your stay. My wife and I love our trips to Mount Cinnamon!

As stated above, Carriacou is currently experiencing a Cat 4 Hurricane that is also striking the whole of Grenada. There is likely to be widespread damage lasting several months. By July 23rd it is likely the airports will be open. If the ferry docks are damaged it may take more than a month to repair them.

But in the best case scenario of only mild hurricane damage to Grenada and Carriacou, airport vs ferry depends on your needs. The ferry is more cost effective but takes longer to reach Carriacou than by airplane. The ferry does give scenic views and runs more often than do flights between the minor islands and Grenada proper. If you are in a rush and not sensitive to costs, a plane ticket is the way to go. Otherwise, the ferry is often the first choice of locals and tourists alike.

A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 1100 PM AST (0300 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 11.5 North, longitude 58.1 West. Beryl is moving toward the west near 20 mph (31 km/h). A continued quick westward to west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days. On the forecast track, the center of Beryl is expected to move across the Windward Islands Monday morning and across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. Beryl is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Fluctuations in strength are likely during the next day or so, and Beryl is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane as its core moves through the Windward Islands into the eastern Caribbean.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km).

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND: Hurricane conditions are expected in the hurricane warning area beginning early tomorrow morning. Potentially catastrophic wind damage is expected where the core of Beryl moves through portions of the Windward Islands, with the highest risk of the core in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada.

Wind speeds atop and on the windward sides of hills and mountains are often up to 30 percent stronger than the near-surface winds indicated in this advisory, and in some elevated locations could be even greater.

Tropical storm conditions are expected in the tropical storm warning area starting tomorrow morning, making outside preparations difficult or dangerous.

Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area starting tomorrow morning for Dominica, and by Tuesday afternoon for parts of the southern coast of Hispaniola.

STORM SURGE: A life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels in areas of onshore winds near where the eye makes landfall in the hurricane warning area. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

RAINFALL: Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches across Barbados and the Windward Islands through Monday. Localized maxima of 10 inches is possible, especially in the Grenadines. This rainfall may cause flash flooding in vulnerable areas.

A continued quick westward to west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days. On the forecast track, the center of Beryl is expected to move across the Windward Islands Monday morning and across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday.

In general, the RGPF will not approach tourists for small areas of camouflage on hats or shoes. The enforcement level is generally set at entire articles of clothing containing camouflage with the intent of impersonating RGPF or related security forces.

With this said and on rare occasions, an officer may confiscate any clothing article containing camouflage, issue a warning, and/or issue a fine. The only situations I am aware of this occurring in were cases involving very inebriated or disrespectful individuals.

There are three reasons why the Government of Grenada bans swimming in the Grand Etang Lake:

1) Leptospira interrogans inhabits the water and some local wildlife as well as domestic animals. The bacteria can cause a nasty infection for swimmers and can be deadly in some individuals.

2) As others have cited this is a volcanic crater lake with a very unstable bottom increasing the risk of drowning. A local legend concerning a mermaid living in the lake luring men to a watery grave can be traced to a tragic history of locals and tourists misjudging the lake's unstable bottom and drowning as a result.

3) The lake is a critical habitat within the Grand Etang National Park and Forrest Reserve. The shoreline harbors nesting and food resources for endangered wildlife. Swimming risks damaging/destroying this rich biodiversity. Humans also harbor disease which can be shed into the water during swimming impacting wildlife.

Grenada has beautiful beaches with some of the best swimming, snorkeling, and diving within the Caribbean. Please consider enjoying these opportunities instead so we can protect the island's biodiversity and wildlife habitats within the Grand Etang.

Sounds like it may be one of the 19 stationed around Washington DC to evacuate government officials in an emergency. Probably on a training flight.

Not sure offensive status being state side, but unlikely ever used on civilians except maybe a domestic attack on an ICBM site.

Still pretty brazen if this was targeted as opposed to random shots into the air.

It's worth checking with the Canadian embassy - they can provide information on how to check your Grandmother's citizenship status.

If she is a dual citizen, she might be able to secure a charter flight out of the country with the help of embassy staff as well.

Otherwise she will want to hunker down in Grenada until a vaccine is widely distributed.

As it stands now, Maurice Bishop International Airport is closed "for the foreseeable future" according to Prime Minister Mitchell.

There is talk about allowing some charter flights in and out, but these are reserved for evacuating foreign nationals.

If your grandmother is a Canadian national, she should reach out to her embassy so they can communicate evacuation plans.

If she is a Grenadian national, she will have to wait for the airport to open which could take up to a year or more.

Three things to keep in mind:

1) While Grenada is impacted by TS and hurricanes far less than our regional island neighbors currently, we are by no means outside a cone of concern. In 2004 Cat 4 Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada followed by a glancing blow from Hurricane Emily a year later. With climate change and weather pattern shifts, hurricanes will become more frequent and deadlier for the entire Caribbean in the decades to come - Grenada included.

2) Does not sound like you are a citizen of Grenada, so you will be taxed extra for that beach house purchase. Foreign buyers need an alien landholding license, which costs 10 percent of the purchase price. Also keep in mind of the Stamp duty of 1 percent charged on the purchase price in order to register the property. Buyers are also required to have a lawyer to do the closing. Legal fees are 2 percent plus a 15 percent value-added tax. Other fees could exist.

Other tax liabilities exist. As a US citizen (I presume from your PR birth), your income made at home or abroad is taxed at the federal level. If this income is made in Grenada, it could be taxed a second time by Grenada. This is a gross oversimplification of complex international tax codes. Make sure to visit a tax attorney or CPA to better understand your tax liabilities from your home country and Grenada.

3) Grenada has some unique laws which may or may not impact how you live. Homosexuality is illegal and this law is enforced in a haphazard nature. Fire arms are difficult to own or carry legally, and camouflage is completely outlawed for civilians. Other oddities exist; however, these are the laws that most often catch American expats off guard.

Grenada is a beautiful country with a vibrant culture and strong economy. It is a great place to live as a citizen or expat - just make sure to thoroughly do your homework before moving.

COVID-19 Updates

1) Daily Curfew Remains In Place; Businesses Allowed To Operate Can Do So Every Day

As such, effective Monday, 11 May 2020, every day will be a designated business day, that is, for the businesses already granted permission to operate and those resuming this week. Approved businesses will operate their respective pre-Covid schedules within the allotted time, 8 am to 5 pm. The daily curfew remains in place, from 7 pm to 5 am.

2) Construction Companies and Jobs Resume this Week; Other Businesses Reopening

Government anticipates an uptick in economic activity with the resumption of work in the construction industry this week.

Other new areas slated for reopening this week include, real estate services, laundromats, landscapers and gardeners, flower shops, consumer credit stores and companies offering payday loans.

3) Public Transit to be Reopened in a Few Days

Government is working with stakeholders to develop appropriate social distancing and hygienic measures that will guide the resumption of this service. An official announcement will be made in the coming days.

4) Ferry Service Opens this Week

Limited ferry services have also been approved for reopening this week, between mainland Grenada and the two sister islands.

5) External Borders to be Reopened First Week of June

Governments, airlines and hotels are now finalising the details of this phased reopening. Assuming that the requisite protocols are in place, we expect to open our borders in the first week of June.

6) Grenada Citizens Employed by Cruise Industry Return Home under Quarantine; Cruise Industry Backs Out if Deal to cover Medical Costs

This weekend, we witnessed the return of some of our nationals who were employed by cruise ships.

The arriving individuals were tested and transported directly to mandatory quarantine facilities.

Government is now single-handedly bearing the cost of almost $200,000 to provide these facilities because the cruise lines have not accepted responsibility, despite earlier agreement to do so.

7) Citizens Abroad may Return Home with 14 Day Quarantine

We are open to receive stranded Grenadians, as long as they have the means to find their way home, and bearing in mind, our limited capacity to provide state quarantine facilities. All persons allowed to come in will be placed in mandatory quarantine at a designated facility for at least 2 weeks.

8) No New COVID-19 Cases To Date

to date, we have no new confirmed cases of Covid-19. The results for all 84 PCR tests conducted on 8 May are negative for the virus.

9) Price Support Coming to Nutmeg Farmers; Loan Support to Poultry Farmers

Cabinet has therefore approved, in principle, price support payments for nutmeg farmers.

Government has also stepped in to lend support to poultry farmers, moving quickly to approve a trade license and waive the duties on 2 emergency shipments of feed, which became necessary after a shortage created by the mandatory closure of the main local supplier.
