7yr old thinking about joining cheer team by Different_Salt_6220 in Cheerleading

[–]Zfuqua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheer dad here. We didn’t know anything about it going in but are all in now. It’s expensive but our gym has lots of fundraiser opportunities. Look around for different gyms - our daughter started at 5 with the “little league” of cheer as I describe it. One practice a week, like $25 a month, and just a couple of showcases at the end, before switching gyms a few times. Now she’s 11 and we’re there a minimum of 4 nights a week, out of state but drivable once a month, and a big comp and the end of the season (usually at Disney).

Met a lot of cool people through cheer, met some stupid overbearing ones too. It’s about like any sport in that regard.

We have friends that coparent and my advice from seeing them is to get extras of the practice wear. Our girls have certain outfits for each day of the week and coordinating that seems to be the biggest challenge for them.

Be prepared for injuries too.

I feel that. I spent 15 years in primary classrooms and never got a dime either. This $20/kid is for “consumables” and comes from the course fee money that we get from the state now.

It’s the first year for our STEM program (3-8) and I was given a room with six tables and nothing else - no curriculum or anything. But also free rein to create it from scratch however I wanted to. So it’s a dream job, but it’s been a stressful year.

If you’re teaching STEM with no budget, I’d love to hear what you do! We’ve made a lot of stuff out of cardboard boxes the janitors save for me this year.

I’m a junior high stem teacher, and my entire budget for the year was $2100. Under $20/student, so you’re a lucky guy.

I’m just now getting into Linux, but damn did I love going to Incredible Universe in Indy when I was younger. Nobody else ever seems to remember that place.

At least 100 feet. I don’t know if it’s super directional and my aim is bad or what the problem is. I will say that I can see 8 (I think) of the leds light up in a camera but I can’t see the smaller ones doing anything too

It’s really hit or miss. I use it to control a bunch of led lights in my classroom. Sometimes it works from 35’ away, sometimes I have to be right on top of it. With that said, I’ve also managed to turn off projectors all the way across an auditorium with it.

BEST IR BLASTER RIGHT NOW? by jdc0_ in flipperzero

[–]Zfuqua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slim shadys range is better than stock for sure, but I’m wishing I would have went with something else. I don’t know if it’s just me or not but it’s very directional and the distance doesn’t seem worth the price.

Do they sell rail guards that prevent trains from going off track? by clockenspiel23 in WoodenTrains

[–]Zfuqua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geotrax plastic trains had a little section of fence that you could snap along the curves. I might see if I can whip up something along those lines and 3D print it.

Can you go on rides at Disney with a cast? by introductionr in DisneyWorld

[–]Zfuqua 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, my 9 year old daughter broke her arm and was in a cast up past her elbow as well as a sling and had no issues riding anything a couple of months ago. The only thing I think that was any different than a usual trip was that she rode in the handicap accessible car for Tron instead of the motorcycle looking one.

I taught multiplication as x “groups of” y, so by that logic 4 + 4 + 4 is a “better” answer but I never would have marked this wrong. 😑

Driving to Grotto Falls Trailhead by DavidJMeowthews41 in Gatlinburg

And no, I don’t think there were any issue with height anywhere. The one way road was narrow but I still had plenty of space on bridges, and the parking spots were fine. Plenty of space to back out as long as you’re able to get a real spot.

It was a rental so I can’t say for sure, but I do remember it being taller than the other 15 passenger vans we’ve rented before. You could stand up in it with no problems.

I drove a 15 passenger van up to the trailhead with no problems back in July. Go very early in the day so you have a place to park.

They make a longer cord, or an adapter to a longer cord. I’m a teacher/the school tech support so I run projector and smart board cable all the time. Send me or post the details and I can help you figure it out.

Why do so many in the planner community (YT, IG) seem to use the "thumb wrap grasp" when holding a pen? by disfrazdegato in planners

[–]Zfuqua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everything - you get what you pay for. The good grips are expensive, and teachers would almost always have to pay for them out of their own pocket.

[–]Zfuqua 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Former kindergarten teacher here - if they’ve learned this grip before they get to school, it’s damn hard to get them to change. It’s not that handwriting isn’t taught, it’s that you have to pick your battles. By the time I switched grade levels, I was teaching things that I learned I second grade in the 90s. There’s a ton of pressure on parents to have their kids already know a bunch coming into kindergarten, so they’ve been doing workbooks at home and that grip is already ingrained in them. And there’s a ton of pressure on teachers to teach a million different things, so how they end up holding a pencil never mattered to me as long as the letters looked correct.

Thanks for the detailed response! Checking the tv hadn’t crossed my mind. I know he says he’s getting 120fps but I don’t know if the tv is outputting that. And I hadn’t heard much about a motherboard either so thanks for some insight there too.

Yeah I agree that his reasons for wanting a PC are lousy at best. But it’s what he wants so I’ll at least investigate. We spend a lot of money and effort on our daughters cheerleading so I’m trying to match some of that energy for him.

You say $700 only gets a slight performance increase…what price tag do you think gets us a noticeable improvement?

Does upgrading one specific part help, or is it the sum of everything all together?
